Hi ,

Well I went in 1997 and I told them in advance I had a Cochlear Implant and had

my card ready for them however, I didn't set anything on I did not have the BTE

at that

time however, have gone to California with it on and told them about it before

going through and it didn't go off. In France Security was heavier than here

back then and

showed them the CI and had no problem. So far no one made me take it off.

Hopefully , they are more aware of it at this time than then. Just have your

Card handy to show it to them. I always carry mine with me at all times. Still

do.

RE: Airport Security (was: going OOT)

,

I'll be going to Italy this fall, and I've been thinking about the

security checkpoint. I'm unclear as to whether it is safe to go thru

the metal detector with the CI on. I'm thinking it is, but that it

might set off the alarm. What do you do at security?

Thanks,

F.

Hi I never had a problem telling security when I go to the airport. I just

showed the ci and tell them it is like a pacemaker. Very rarely they asked me

for CI card.

the mini manicure scissors! I agree, all airports should have the same

guidelines so passengers know what to expect! This is especially important for

passengers with special needs...like US! I did have a very positive moment in

Atlanta at the Delta gate. I walked up and asked them when they were boarding

the flight...she said about 15 minutes, and from habit I said " I am deaf " and

might not hear the flight being called. She immediately took my

ticket....upgraded my seat and said " just be here in 15 minutes and you can

board " . Well I

thought that was nice.....so I wandered down to the ladies room and out of the

blue I heard my name being called on the intercom.....Debra Hollingsworth

please report to gate 33!!!!!! I was stunned and felt a little guilty saying I

was deaf!! Well, I am deaf.......sort of lol!! Boy these CI's keep amazing

us!!

Deb,

Not exactly sure. We had gone to Disneyland for a weekend. I

think I had flown to Denver prior to that which was after 9/11 but had

no problems. Its frustrating when you cannot expect all airports to

follow let alone comprehend the same set of guidelines.

Deb,

You should feel guilty! But why? Just teasing. No don't feel

guilty. There are times we must ask for accomoodations which in my

view puts us on a level playing field as those with sight and hearing.

Here is a no-brainer some of my guide dog friends run into. " Oh I

wish I could have a guide dog so I can take her everywhere with me. "

" Sure, just poke your eyes out and then you can get your own guide

dog. "

Hi ,

I have a hearing ear dog that goes everywhere with me. and have had no problems

Only once when I was attending a court hearing and the security beeped and they

checked me out . after a couple of times I asked them if the Microchip on the

dog would be the cause of setting it off. So he took his wand and sure enough it

beeped . so after that they turned it down for us to go through. This happened

in California

I am from Missouri. Have had no problems with him otherwise..

I don't mind them wanding my dog. Or me for that matter. But I

have to tell them to do us one at a time. Try to control your dog

when both are being wanded. What a fun time. LOL I will remember

the microchip. I just had Gimlet chipped a few weeks ago.

I have always told them at the airport he has a microchip and if they do not

understand what a Cochlear Implant is I just tell them it is a hearing aid and

that is no problem.

Hi ,

First of all take a copy of your maps with you! It has been said that

there is nothing to worry about while going through ariport security with your

processor. I personally don't care what anybody says in that area. I turn the

processor off, walk through, and turn it back on. No one knows anything.

When I was wearing the BWP, I would ask to be wanded and show them my card.

Good advice! I fly frequently for my job, but I usually just walk on through

without any effects without setting anything off. If they ask what " that

thing on my head is " I usually just say it's a hearing aid. If I say cochlear

implant, I get a bunch of blank stares and then it's a legnthy explanation

process from there.

One time I set the detector off because I forgot to take my watch off. The

guard asked me what was on my head and I told him, in a joking manner, that I

was an air marshal. He didn't catch the joke and took me seriously and waved

me on through. Oops! Wonder what the fine is for impersonating an air

marshal? :^) Lesson I learned- never joke about these things!

Cheers!

and all,

The reason we get our CI's and guide/hearing sogs, etc. is to lead

as normal a life as we can. This is why I don't make a case out of

that " thing " on my head unless I am queried. When I found out the CI

did not trigger the alarms at the airports, I just left it on, and

said nothing. And these days, after 9/11, I would not do anything to

arouse suspicion. Who knows but some pathetic underpaid security

person might become paranoid at the sight of someone tweaking a little

box on one's belt...or worse, hidden inside a shirt. Its like what

Judge Judy says, do not volunteer information. Same idea is good here

too.

I don't think there is enough ferrous metal in hearing aids or CIs to

set off the metal detector. They work by measuring differences in

magnetic fields and the change is not strong enough to make them

beep. Whether you have your CI or hearing aid operating when you pass

through the gate has no effect on the metal detector and it will not

damage the electronics of your instruments. The detectors don't put

out any signal of any sort, they're a passive device. I've flown a

number of times and never gave it any thought and made no issue of it

to the security weenies and they made no issue of it to me, and I've

been through metal dectectors in public buildings without setting an

alarm off and not telling security I had a hearing aid on.

It's a non-problem, I think.

And too, remember that we use a magnetic field in our t-coils and we

use magnetic loops in meetings and such, where a positive magentic

field IS present and it doesn't damage anything.

Why do you think that is Ralph? More metal in the BWP? I wore my body

processor many times into the stores when I wore it after I was hooked up and I

didn't set anything off either. Maybe it depends on how high the security gate

alarms are set? There must be some sort of parameters for that?

Deb,

I believe the Platinum BWP is encased in metal whereas the auria is encased

in plastic. So the bwp will set of a metal detector but the BTE will not.

Store alarms are theft and security systems, not metal detectors, so metal will

not set off a store alarm.

Cheers!

Deb, Funny that I just noticed this morning that the headpiece on my BTE

does not 'stick' to it. With the BWP, I will stick the headpiece onto it for

storage. So it is the metal in the BWP that sets off the alarm. Note it does

not do this in stores.

Thanks to everyone for all the tips on airport security. Don't be

surprised if I bring it up again closer to my trip!

We're heading out to Huntsville, AL for the weekend (by car, not plane!)

to see the space museum. Should be interesting.

Hey ,

After a quick search of " google.com " I could not find out what the

fine would be for impersonating an air marshal...but I did find an

interesting story. Here is the story:

Vassalo, 46, allegedly picked the wrong time to lie about

being an air marshal. The Postal Service worker was on a US Airways

flight about to take off from Philadelphia International Airport on

Aug. 26, when police say he ventured into the first-class cabin.

There he told a passenger he was a member of the federal air marshal

program — the undercover security force charged with preventing

hijackings on commercial flights, police say.

Unfortunately for Vassalo, the person he was talking to really was

an air marshal. When the real agent asked for identification,

Vassalo allegedly tried to flee the plane.

He was arrested in the airport soon after and charged with

impersonating a law enforcement officer. The flight was canceled.

(end of story)

So perhaps you better remember not to joke around the next time you

are questioned while going through security!

,

I have rarely ever had trouble with security at the airport. We were talking

about this at our CI Board Meeting yesterday, One of our members had also been

to Europe and had no problem with security. On rare occasion

they do wand us even though we tell them our ci is a hearing aid.

They just pick some at random. So it just varies. Had no problems in Europe at

all. so Good luck and enjoy your trip to Italy and Relax.
