doesn't know me well either.

later on ,,, found out that my doc has another patient who was going for CI,

not only that.. we both had surgery the SAME WEEK by same surgeon. She

confessed that until I asked about CI, she doesn't know much of it, just heard

of it

and told another patient about it and referred her/him as well. Think of

odd, two of us from same GP doc?

your story of calling your doc for a referral is great i too did the

same but the guy and his office staff didn't have a clue what it was so i

told him just go ahead and refer me and i'll tell ya all about it later i

did this sarcastically figuring i'll need to go in and see the doctor and

explain what's what to my surprise the office did go ahead and refer me

.....

not having any idea what exactly a CI was deep down this really

doesn't set well with me ... referral made without knowledge??? i didn't

question then of course ... just counted my lucky stars

My GP (family doctor) was the opposite! He constantly asked me every time I was

in his surgery for if I would 'consider a CI' claiming he had 'several' patients

with a 'lesser hearing loss' than mine gaining approval for CI... When I was in

hospital for an unrelated matter last year, several of the nurses even asked if

my GP had talked to me about the 'amazing' CI!

There is only one place you can be implanted in Ireland - Beaumont Hospital. It

is not unusual to have 2/3 from same region in hospital getting CI at the same

time in Ireland.

If you are determined - don't let one doctor stop you - get two, three and four

positive opinions to sway them.

I was able to get my own appt with no referral, probably because I

don't have to go with an in plan dr. I'm really happy I didn't have

the hassle of that though and that I was able to choose where I

wanted to be implanted.

As for my GP.. He knew about cochlear implants, but I don't think he

knew how well they could potentially perform until I visited him

after my activation. He could not believe the difference in my

hearing.(From 5% discrimination to 95% discrimination) He kept

shaking his head and saying... " That's amazing "

Now he is " a little more educated " and he also has referred several

of his deaf patients to me. So you see.. One person CAN make a

difference!

Yes if you get a PPO instead of an HMO you don't need the referrals.

As deductibles are based on the calandar year it would be best to be

implanted early in jan or feb then all your other medical expences fpr

the year are cheaper as you satisfied the yearly deductable
