After over 30 years of no hearing at all, I had no expectations when I had my CI surgery in 2002. I just hoped I would be able to lipread better. This turned out to be the most amazing, positive thing I have ever gone though. I can now converse on the phone for hours and actually enjoy talking to telemarketers lol! Music is stunning...not in my wildest dreams did I think it would be this good! : ) Deb H Clarion CII 6/02 Auria/HiRes 1/03 Auria Trials
Guest guest
Wow,, many questions! Overall,,,,,, my implant gave me MORE than I expected. All I cared about prior to implanting, more awareness of sounds. I never dream of using phone, yet I have, with some frustration (depends on who on phone). I never dream of hearing and understanding words without lipreading, yet now I can at times. As my audie wrote in an informational letter today he quoted " The improvements have been dramatic in the sense that Lee relied 100% on ASL for communication prior to implantation, of which she now relies mostly on her cochlear for speech understanding and uses of ASL only on occasion. " I am not in college yet, but will in the fall so I can't say anything about grades, etc., but I see NO REASON for it be " same " as before because if the implant works, the self esteem grows, so therefore, students " should " do better. It been nearly 4 months since my activation day. Hope this helps. Lee pre-lingual - profound loss since birth
Guest guest
Yes, Lee. Your's is a beautiful story because being prelingual, you've had to learn what the sounds represent as you hear them thru your 3G. I can only imagine what it's been like for your family and your dedication to this is amazing. The CI is an miraculous device that makes hearing a part of life for thousands of people who otherwise would live in a silent and very often lonely world. And to think, there are so many out there who still don't even know that sound can be theirs. We are still in the minority but it does seem as if the numbers are growing faster now. Congratulations on your wonderful success. I love reading all the special stories you share. Thanks. I know many people appreciate what you have shared and silently read with a smile on their faces. Guest guest
Hello! I m minnie and had the ci implanted on February 10th. The switch on was over two weeks ago and it is blindblowling!!! I have no regrets as I m hearing much more sounds than ever. I was born profoundly deaf from birth due to Rubella. I can hear baby crying, fan extractor, kettle boiling, post/newspaper post through the letterbox, children calling me mum, dogs barking, bird singing,knives/forks scraping the plates(arrgh!), toilet flushing, light switch on.etc. I can hear sh and s for the first time ever on the first day of the switch on which made me cry! and my lipreading s so much easier already. My husband told me that he doesnt do any reapeats anymore which is a great improvement!! Honestly, I feel that I wish I had it earlier and I do feel emotional describing the sounds to you because its a miracle!!! My children are less frustrated now and noticed that I m aware of whats going on around them. Anyone who are thinking of getting one - please do not miss that opportuntiy and believe it ll the best thing ever happens to you. Good luck to anyone who are in the ci process and Ill be rooting for you all. Ill look forward to hear more things and hopefully one day Ill be able to use the phone. Thank you everyone for their support and advice. Take care, Best wishes, Minniex
