when i was 19 yrs old i had knee surgery the incision became infected

.... staph infection

i had to have several more surgeries and after on i was given several

antibiotics to try and save my leg or save my life things were not

going well for a time then and spending an entire summer in the hospital

so young wasn't what i had looked forward too

it was during this time that overnight i lost all hearing when

friends came to see me

they were great ... would act out what they were trying to say or write it

acting it out was far funnier but i had a boyfriend who said he

couldn't handle a deaf person lol i thought this was funny like how does

anyone " handle " another person i had planned to go to college i had a

part time job i loved music but i had a wise father who told me

" it's only hearing " (little did i know at the time my dad would walk

out of the hospital with tears in his eyes) but these words have stayed

with me hearing was only one small part of who i am yep it

took guts to get back out there but look at how much i would have missed

if it didn't but it takes gut to get a CI too lots of

faith and trust with fingers crossed i did it no one ever told me i

would

understand speech with a CI

no one ever said i would be able to use a phone but i did know a CI

would allow more

and i did know i wanted this and no one or no way would i not go for it

You say " Even if I'm able to hear

and understand speech with a CI, it doesn't mean that sign language

won't

continue to be an important part of my life. "

And I say bully for you. Sign is a skill that one should

treasure and nourish.

And did you ever get my email? Or are you just ignoring me?

Hehehe.

Pardon my ignorance, but what " bully for you " mean? I've never heard that

expression before. <smile>

To answer your question, yes, I have been ignoring you. Are you *that*

surprised? Just kidding!! <smile> Actually, I'm still working on the e-mail

I wrote in response to your questions. I want to make sure I address them as

thoroughly as I can. Maybe I should stop typing now and finish the first

e-mail I wrote. <grin>

Larry,

Really? I didn't know that. LOL! One of these days I'll have to look up the

lyrics for that song on the Internet. I remember how that song sounds and

the chorus used to crack me up every single time!

As long as its you who is using labels on you, its perfectly acceptable.

LOL Its when others apply labels without really understanding what they are

doing, is when trouble starts. Or when they insist on what they believe is

correct labeling. I go round with this with a guy in the UK who is totally

blind, and think I cannot call myself blind because I am not total. LOL I

give him lots of grief over this.

If it makes you feel any better, I disagree with the person you mentioned in

your last post.

Blindness can mean anything from reading regular print with magnification to

total blindness. Why some totally blind people refuse to acknowledge that, I

don't know.

, I should think that splitting hairs would require a sharp eye and a

steady hand. Quite a feat for a blind person <g>.

Exactly, . What we experience as individuals is the bottom line.

Its like say, hearing the same music but you and I will have a vastly

different perspective on it. Or 2 sighted people enjoying the same sunset,

yet they will have differing views of the experience. And that is a good

thing.

This guy from the UK, he gets upset when I tell him he is way off the

mark. I understand why he feels that way but its wrong.

I agree. No offense to the person you mentioned, but some totally blind people

think the world revolves around them. They also think that people who are

legally blind aren't really disabled because they can still see. Some people in

the Deaf community feel the same way about those of us who are hard of hearing

or have CIs. I've seen posts on one deaf/hoh forum which said that people who

choose to be implanted are only doing so because they don't accept who they are.

I strongly disagree. Why can't someone who doesn't benefit from hearing aids

have the chance to improve their lives? Why does that automatically mean they

don't accept themselves or the way God made them? The way I see it, if I don't

criticize a Deaf person for using ASL (which I would never do), they shouldn't

criticize me for my desire to have a CI.
