Guest guest
, The wheelchair is a very good idea and many patients requests one,the airlines are very nice about this and have one available for you, mention this while buying your ticket and they will let you know. Just ell them you will be having surgery and they will help you out. Some patients do purchase 2 tickets, to be on the safe side. Some airlines requiere this will others give you an extra seat without costs if they are available, the problem is not knowing if they will be availbale. You might want to check maybe 1st class is cheaper than 2 regular seats. Ninananny b <blewisfla@...> wrote: Hi Everyone, As crazy as it may sound, I am worried more about the plane trip to and from San Diego than the surgery itself. I weigh over 300 lbs, have difficulty walking very far, won't fit in the seats and probably not the bathroom (trip home) and will be coming from southeast Florida so it will be a long trip. Any suggestions on airlines? Thinking changing planes might be good idea but will need time. Thought about buying 2 tickets and also wheel chair even though I don't use one at all. Guest guest
, Also, don't forget that the airport has many, many of those cart things that will take you to your destination within the airport. This would probably be faster than a wheelchair and you can tell the stewardess before you land that you need one to meet you at your gate. I would try to schedule as much time as possible (within reason) between your flights if you can. I think Nina had a good idea...instead of buying 2 tickets, go first class! That would be so much better! Take care and keep us informed how you do! We are all pulling for you! Please let us know as soon as you set your date so we can cheer you on! Jenni C. Guest guest
My friend and I flew on American Airlines. We only bought 1 seat each. I weighed 320 and she was just under 400. We talked to the airline before we booked the flights. They have extensions for the seat belts and the arms lift up to make more room. I did ask for a wheelchair on the way home. (That's the way to go because they board you on the plane first and call ahead to have a wheelchair waiting)I had never been on an airplane before and I loved every minute of it. The airline told me that if someone didn't want to sit next to a larger person ...they could asked to be moved. We didn't have any problems though. We used the extensions on each flight and were very comfortable. I even researched exactly how big the seats were. The first class seats are about 2 inches bigger but I didn't think it was worth that much more money. I intend to fly back one day and be able to fit in the seat and the seatbelt. Good luck and I'll be thinking about you all. Guest guest
Hi I had the same worries as I started at 363 lbs. I did buy 2 tickets for myself and was glad I did. If the planes have room, you will have an extra seat but I was not willing to chance it and I'm glad I didn't. I travelled over Labor Day weekend and the planes were virtually full. I needed the 2 seats to feel comfortable and not to be embarrassed by overflowing into someone else's seat. The airlines will provide a wheelchair and they were very nice to me about it. I used one on the trip home and was glad I did. I travelled all the way from Virginia and changed planes on the way there but got a straight flight home. I also needed the seat belt extension and the attendants were very kind. I asked as I boarded the plane and they either handed me one right away or brought one to my seat. Whenever you think you will need a wheelchair, call ahead the day before your flight to confirm your tickets and tell them you will need wheelchair assistance and they will be ready for you when you arrive. I did fly Delta home and thought they had a somewhat larger seat but was still glad I spent the extra money for 2 seats. It was one less thing to worry about. If you have the money I would get 2 seats or if you are traveling with someone who is smaller, you can book a seat next to them and they will understand if you use some of their seat!! Guest guest
Hi Dianne, Yes I was thinking the same, more comfortable and less hassle. I flew to Washington state with my grandson a few years ago and weighed about 50 to 60 lbs less than I do now and it was ok but he was very small. I have also flown where I felt like I couldn't breath and 2 seats would be well worth it especially after surgery. Not sure if anyone is going with me at this point, still checking my options. Thanks for the info. Dianne <datsecondmountain@...> wrote: Hi I had the same worries as I started at 363 lbs. I did buy 2 tickets for myself and was glad I did. Guest guest
Thank you Penny, I hope that this trip will just remove any stress that she and my other sisters have. I have (4 other sisters) 3 of us are FAT, 1 is OK, and the other is very slim....but they are all worried about the Mexico thing. (Hmmm.....and I thought that I was the one that was supposed to be nervous) At least when reports back that it was a great experience, I will not have to answer sooo many questions, and maybe I will be coming with the other 2, and my daughter at some point.....wouldn't that be great!!!!! I know that my daughter would have signed up with me, except for the money. In the past, I probably just would have said that I would not have it done, and used my financial arrangements for her to use....but this time I am being selfish...I need this for myself. Thank you for your Best Wishes. BPenny Manville <pmanvill@...> wrote: If your sister is anthing like me, she will becompletely won over and will wish she was havng itdone with you! Guest guest
Hi Dianne, I took your advice and bought 2 tickets. I am going to request a wheelchair on the way back home. Where did you get the wheel chair, ticket counter or otherwise? L (future bandster 3/27/06)Dianne <datsecondmountain@...> wrote: Hi I had the same worries as I started at 363 lbs. Good Luck Dianne 9/5/05 363/313/??? -- Air Plane Trip more scary than surgery!!! Hi Everyone, As crazy as it may sound, I am worried more about the plane trip to and from San Diego than the surgery itself. I'm 56 years old, want to do this, not a whimp but trying to be realistic. Any suggestions???? Thanks, in West Palm Beach (hoping to set date soon) Bring photos to life! Guest guest
Congratulations on making your band date!! I called ahead to request the wheelchair and they had one waiting when I checked in, actually outside the airport at the curbside check in. The request came up on the screen when they pulled up my reservation and they had it right there for me. Best of luck to you!! Dianne 363/313/??? 9/5/05 -- Air Plane Trip more scary than surgery!!! Guest guest
Tammy, Thanks for the encouragement. So ironic, life is. My husband will actually be having a brain tumor removed on Mon. 3/27, the day I was scheduled to be banded. I wish you well with your surgery. Keep us all informed.
