Jerome, please do give the BTE's a try. They are much more powerful than

in the ear and make sure you get a good telecoil for the phone. I have now

been on BTE's for about 4 years and they have been good to me. The best

thing for TV oh, is an infrared transmitter that you can get at Radio Shack

for about $60.00. The transmitter comes with a headset. You can walk from

room to room and still hear perfectly what is going on in the TV show. Some

people can use them without their hearing aids, but I need mind. I promise

you will understand 95% of TV. In addition everyone else in the house will

love you for getting them. Take care guy

Jerome,

I don't think you understood what I was trying to explain. Believe me, my

experience with the hearing aid was nothing more than an assistance to

lipread. This was an explanation of the terms used by CI users when they

are activated. It had nothing to do with sound quality and hearing success.

Re: What are we?

Importance: High

The terms " hooked up " or " turned on " are CI terms which have become

standard terms for the point when a person's hearing is restored thru the

activation of the equipment. You might want to compare it to when you put

the hearing aid on for rhe first time and your audiologist sets the

hearing

aid to match your hearing needs. There's no difference...just different

terminology.

The CI certainly supports it's users. We are so excited for the gift it

gives. Without my CI, I feel very lost. I put mine on before I leave my

bedroom in the morning and only take it off for the shower but it is right

back on as soon as I have dried my hair and stays on for the rest of the

day. I have said many times that making the decision to get a CI was one

of

the best decisions I ever made for myself. There's nothing more human

than

that.

Hi ,

What's your hearing loss? Care to post your audiogram...

I know BTE works wonder for people with *mild* to *moderate* hearing loss,

in fact there's a recent press release from Siemens that people with mild to

moderate hearing loss who wear Triano can hear like normal healthy 25 years

old college student.

As to how it will help people with severe to profound, results vary a lot.

But I don't know anyone with severe to profound loss hear perfect with BTE..

Maybe it's possible, if the loss is *mix* of conductive and sensorineural in

nature.

Anyway, since it's required to try it as a standard procedure before getting

cochlear implant, I will be giving it a try.

Jerome,

I don't believe there is any data that suggests that ANYONE with hearing

loss, conductive or sensorineural, or mixed, hears PERFECTLY with ANY

technology. Perfect hearing in any or all situations is an unrealistic

expectation for anyone.

There is a great deal of variability, as you say, but my suggestion

would be to go into the BTE trial with an open mind. It may meet your

goals, it may not. The same will be true of the CI. The only known at

this point is that your current hearing aids are NOT meeting your needs.

Hi Brad,

The lack of public data regarding what particular hearing loss will work

perfectly with what particular technology doesn't mean that " hearing loss

type " should be ignored.

Base on what I have read, and I'm sure you know this...

Someone with mixed hearing loss, 20db sensorineural and 60db conductive will

perform much better with higher amplified hearing aids than someone someone

with 80db sensorineural hearing loss. They won't suffer recruitment problem

like the 80db sensorineural hearing impaired people.

Yes, I will be going to BTE with an open mind, I wonder what surprising

magic he can produce as he had claimed.
