Colleen,

I waited and waited to see your report and got a

little worried last night because we still hadn't

heard from you. Thanks for posting this!

I think you are doing great. You can't expect to do

as well as I do as I am used to the sound a CI gives

and your brain is totally puzzled at this point. Just

understanding the things you are hearing is proof

positive that you are going to do great.

I was glad to read about your practice efforts because

that will definitely pay off. As time goes by and you

have more mapping, you are going to be surprised by

some of the things you realize you are hearing.

This is a great miracle for all of us.

Congratulations! There is so much out there for you

and you'll know that as time goes by.

<smile>

Hi ,

I am sorry that you were not happy at hook up today. But remember it takes

time for the brian to learn new things and able to hear again. You may have

to go to AV. therapy? It will help you pick up things and the CI will be better

so you can hear again. Take Care.

I'm so sorry that your hook up was such a disappointment. I'm sure

it's been a very difficult day for you and wish it had gone so much

better. Not everyone is happy on their hook up day and for some it

takes a lot of work and practice to make it better. I'm very hopeful

that your next mapping solves the problem with tinnitus and inability

to understand with the implant but it may take several mappings. We

never really know.

Hoping tomorrow is a better day and you recognize some simple sounds

like the sound of birds or the wind thru the trees. While the

tinnitus is bothering you it sometimes helps to cut back on caffeine.

I always found that when my mapping was too weak, I have tinnitus.

Stress makes it worse too. Today was obviously very stressful for

you.

I be looking forward to more of your e-mail as you progress. I have a form that

I need to fill out for getting test for CI. I had it for 3 months and I haven't

touch it with ink yet. It is a scary process. I'm thinking long and hard. I

just should just fill it out and go in for the test. If I can't get it... then

that would be it. (sigh)

Hook Up

I sent a long and wordy email to most of you here but to tell others

briefly.....

Today was my hook up! I have to say I was very disappointed.I don't

have an ounce of understanding just a steady " tinnitus-like " drone. A

continual chimey sounding tune. I can't hear my own voice or anyone

else's.I am calling this " glorified tinnitus " ! I certainly hope

things get better and better because without my right hearing aid in

I can not understand a thing. The tunes do not even change. They just

chime away..........

I do like all the cool gadgets and the cool canvas tote bag.The black

nylon shoulder bag is nice too. I wanted him to throw in one of those

stuffed monkeys with the processor on the belt but he said I'd have

to be good. I guess I wasn't good....LOL

So anyways--Day 1 was not anywhere near what I thought it was going

to be.I'm looking forward to the next mappings..

Hi !

I smiled all the way through your post! How cute Annika must have been

when she was babbling away in the restaurant. And how exciting it must be to

watch her discovering sounds! Congratulations to all of you! It sounds

like it was quite a hook up day. I'm thrilled for you all. In time it should

just keep getting better and she'll be able to tolerate more volume. Good

luck to her! Keep us posted on how she is doing.

already. Your surgery, and plenty dates of mapping are already set

up and u dont have to worry about making appts!

> I'm scheduled for CI surgery on september 8th. Got a letter from

the CI Center at NYU today listing the hook up and programming dates

for the first two months. Hook up is set for September 27th. For

some reason it says I have to come in also says I have to come in the

next day on the 28th. And again on October 11th and 23rd. Taht's

every two weeks. They told me once a month for the first 6 months.

Is this normal.

My apologies everyone. I've been so busy the past few days I haven't had a

chance to think. Okay, hook up. She did the usual things - the beeps and the

comfort sounds, then she flipped my left ear on. Oh my gosh, I jumped. She

began asking me questions - how old are you, how long have you been married,

where do you live, etc. I heard everyone and answered each. I heard very well

in my left ear. My audie was stunned, my mom, me, even my doctor who I saw a

little bit later. He told me he was happy everything had worked out well for

me. I went back yesterday and got another program. Still hearing. Today I

went to work, chatted with people, heard people say hi, overheard a co worker

doing business on the phone at the next of me. I can't believe any of this is

happening. I'm hearing pretty well in my left ear. Haven't attempted the TV,

radio, phone or any of the attachments yet, but I was told to take things slow.

Again, I'm sorry I haven't touched base. I'll try to read the digest more and I

have some questions too.

What a nice report, Trish. Congratulations. I know this activation probably

brought some aprehension while you were waiting but your perserverance has won

out and now you can enjoy your new hearing. You'll have to tell us more when

you have more time. I'm sure each day is bringing you more and more good things

to hear. We'll be waiting for those questions.

Hello Judy, I hope thats your name :-)

Congratulations on your successful surgery. I too have the Freedom and

I too had a two day hook-up/switch-on/activation. I have been acivated

for just over 13 months now and have had results way beyond my

expectations.

Hi Judy:

Congrats! I've been activated a little longer than a month and am loving it!

It is so much better than a HA!

Everyone has different experiences at activation. I could understand speech

right away, but everyone sounded like a computer voice. I was so glad that went

away fairly quickly (within 2 days most people sounded normal). Everyday I

noticed little improvements. It took me a little longer to hear well on my cell

phone, but it is much, much easier now.

Good Luck!

Do you actually wear the processor at the end of the first day?

Hi Judy,

The worst is behind you - glue? What were they THINKING? Of course I

had half my head shaved in the dark ages, 10 years ago, but a great

plastic surgery closure with dissolving stituches that you can hardly

see.

I, too, chose the Nucleus product, and it's been great. I also have

the Freedom processor, so even though I was implanted 10 years ago, I

have the latest technology.

Meanwhile, be aware that the new sounds you hear might just be noises,

might be the cadence and rhythm of speech, but not words, and all of this

is normal. Some people hear and understand words with their first

mapping. Lots of us don't. So it's a journey, not a race.

Check out what is on the website about first mappings.

www..com Lots of goodies to read.

Let us know how it goes.

Good morning, I am new to this group. I have had gradual hearing loss

over the last 25 years. I lost all use of my L ear several years ago;

I had functioned fair with my R ear w/an aid until the first of this

year. From January to May I lost nearly all the hearing in my R ear. I

was terrified of the surgery; the thought of " drill a hole in your

skull " just made me a bit nervous. But I had my L ear implanted May

21st and will have my processor hooked up Wed & Thursday of this week.

The surgery was the easiest thing I had ever had done. The worst part

was trying to remove the glue from my hair; they glued me back together

instead of stitches!! I choose a Freedom and am very anxious for the

hook up. I am also very scared!
