Guest guest
Hi.. I am new to this list. While I don't have a CI I have been thinking of one. Ok.. as way of introduction. My name is and I have a Profound Bilateral Sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. I started wearing one bte hearing aid since I was 9 yrs old. I live in N. Michigan (grew up in S. Calif) and my mother also has a hearing lost but has a CI (my mother has otosclerosis, and a good chance so do I). At the moment I have two bte aids and they seem to be working pretty good except that my ability to understand speech has gotten pretty bad. I have been married for 28 yrs (husband is hearing) and have a 27 yr old daughter (also hearing). I also have a certified service dog that I trained myself. I know Ruth Fox and she is the one that told me to check out this group. As for what the Dr told you about otosclerosis I have known since I was 17 yrs old. I was told not to plan on more then one or two children. there you have it in a 'nutshell'. :> Michigan At 10:17 PM 6/10/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Hi there, > Who was asking about hearing loss and pregnancy? Guest guest
Hi , although I don't know the connection, All of the girls in our family who are deaf seemed to lose more hearing with subsequent pregnancies too. There are presently 4 ci recipients in my family and my girls are beginning to lose their hearing too.. they're now in their 20's My loss started in my early 20's.. at least it was noticeable by then and got worse as I had my 3 children. It may have continued to decline without pregnancies too.. I just don't know. I'd like to see a study on this too. the only one who had hearing loss in early years was my oldest sister and she didn't have any children till she was in her 30's. Her hearing was gone long before that time so I'm not positive if there is a connection or not. I really don't worry about my girls and my grandchildren having a hearing loss with all of the advances in cochlear implant technology. Best of luck as you continue your quest to have your daughter implanted. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask away. Do you know how much speech recognition you have right now? Nice to have you here on the forum.. Hope you'll get the information and support you're looking for. cheers, Silly in MI

Women do lose > their hearing when they are pregnant. I lost a great deal of my hearing while pregnant with my son. The doctor actually advised me not to have any more children since there was such a huge hearing loss. When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter we monitored my hearing closely. I didn't lose much while pregnant but during labor my tinnitus became worse then I lost about 5% and continued lossing 5% a year after that. Guest guest
Hi,Kat...just noticed this post.I was losing hearing, while pregnant with our 1st daughter. Was tested a few mos after & used that as a base, when 2nd daughter was born. They confirmed that I had lost hearing while pregnant, tho I already knew it.My nerve deafness was getting worse each year...but pregnacy caused the most " noticable " loss, for me.How it worsens hearing loss caused by nerve deafness,I have no idea...but it did. Guest guest
Alice, I think you're on to something in your reply to that there could be a connection btw hearing loss and pregnancy. However, I think the explanation could be a hormonal one. It seems my hearing with HAs would sometimes be slightly off around that time of month for me. Guest guest
Hi there, Who was asking about hearing loss and pregnancy? I asked Dr. Megerian of University Hospitals about it, and this is his reply: Pregancy really doesn't exacerbate hearing loss unless you have otosclerosis. It tends to cause rapid acceleration of conductive hearing loss in those with otosclerosis likely due to shifts in the hormone balance So there you have it. Guest guest
The message is interesting but I'm not totally sure that otosclerosis is the only reason for hearing loss and pregnancy. I have a young woman who's mom is one of my oldest friends. She had a baby six months ago and at the same time went totally deaf in her left ear. The doctors are not saying she has otosclerosis and this is her first incidence of hearing loss in her life. They say the hearing loss is due to unknown factors but associated with the pregnancy. Guest guest
I do not have otosclerosis but did loose my hearing during pregnancy. Both ear. all my highs from 750 hz on up. Doctors don't make the connection but there are many women like me. Maybe someday they will figure it out. > > From: Alice <justagram@...> > Date: 2003/06/11 Wed AM 09:03:32 EDT > > Subject: Re: Hearing loss and pregnancy > >
Guest guest
Hi I only have knolwledge of otosclerosis and i know firsthand that it progressed from the time i was maturing right into middle age .It progressed more rapidly with each of my 4 pregnancies. It was gradualtroughout each pregnancie..not a one time sudden lossafter their birth..The 3 little bones in my middle ear were effected first..they became spongy..then my cochlea was effected. At the time of my CI ,my Dr. was unsure if he could insert the electrode array..he was successful. Guest guest
--- Hello , I've worn bilateral hearing aids since I was nine years old and was able to hear well with them. Then I noticed my both hearing went down right after my son was born. Since then I tried different brands of hearing aids and still doesn't helped me better. So then I decided to have cochlear implant, and now it is much better! So maybe it will be a good chance for you to have a cochlear implant. Guest guest
Hi Sounds as though our hearing histories are much alike. We were also counseled about the number of children we should have but I didn't listen. But then even by the time our first was born my hearing was very bad..Now i have wonderful hearing and 4 wonderful hearing sons.
