The need for vitamin D Further evidence of the beneficial effects of sun exposure is found in the importance of vitamin D to our body’s health. A small amount of sunshine, chiefly UVB, can help reduce the risk of breast, colon and prostate cancers. Sunlight is the key source of vitamin D that plays a crucial role in regulating the production of cells, a mechanism absent in cancer. A study from the University of Boston, School of Medicine has found that there is a key enzyme, or body chemical, which is involved in the processing of vitamin D. This enzyme is found in the colon and if the body does not take in sufficient vitamin D then the enzyme would not be activated and the body would not be able to turn the vitamin into a form it could use. The active form of vitamin D prevents colon cells from proliferating and prompts them to change into more mature cells which are less capable of becoming

cancerous. This same process occurs in breast, skin and prostate cells. Studies on latitudinal differences in incidence of 13 different cancers indicates that UVR and vitamin D could have a key role in disease incidence ie the more UVR and subsequent vitamin D production the less the likelihood of developing cancer. People with darker skins need to spend longer in the sun to get the necessary amount of vitamin D, since the pigment in their skins blocks UV absorption. A study in Australia has revealed the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is much higher than previously thought. The study found that 23 percent of women, and 76 percent of all nursing home residents have a marginal vitamin D deficiency. More alarming was the finding that 80 percent of dark-skinned, veiled and pregnant women have a serious deficiency. The children of veiled women were also at risk. Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to

osteoporosis. The finding that women, and veiled women in particular, and nursing home residents are deficient in vitamin D has important implications for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. http://www.sickamongthepure.net/exposureuvr/vitamind.html Suzi What is a weed?
