Taking weight off is possible and yes it does help!

Especailly for me with the amount of flares I have now

compared with 40lbs. ago. I always hurt myself if I

exercise per se. I ended up going to the YMCA to the

therapy pool. You can get a script from your doc and

go for free!!!! It will at the very least help with

range of motion or arthritis. The gravity isn't there

either and I highly recommend it! you might give it a

try! Good luck! Take care. Kim

I am also overwight and it is a constant battle agains the meds and little

excercise to loose wight. But my sister did have gastric bypas surgery, and let

me tell you it was not an easy operation. Think long and hard before you have

anything like this done, it is a long and dificult recovery.

Has anyone out there with RA or psoriatic arthritis or

lupus lost a lot of weight, and if so, has it helped

your symptoms?

I was thinking about getting that gastric band put

around my stomach. I would hate to go through all of

arthritis symptoms.

Thanks in advance for yall's help.

I was 125 lbs overweight and I had adjustable gastric banding(lapband) done.

It has been great. So far and I half way to my goal and its been a little

over a year. I love the fact that it adjusts to MY needs its not one size

fits all.

I was banded in May 2004 and I had a nine month remission of all my

symptoms. I think a lot of it had to do with the change of diet. I was on NO

meds

for nine months and then had to return to meds. I am currently on plaquinil

and that is about it.

Weight loss surgery is such an individual decision. I know there are others

on the board that have had gastric bypass procedures. I knew that was NOT

an option for me. I could not handle the malabsorption which a lot of people

do not consider this includes meds as well as food, vitamins and minerals.

I have lost a lot slower than many of my other bandster friends because of

my RA and the problems with getting enough exercise. But I have one friend

with lupus and we are about at the same spot. I am going for an adjustment

soon to get my weight loss moving again.

Please feel free to contact me...I will answer any questions that you have.

Thanks so much for your response, Toni. Have you had

any problems swallowing your meds? I am on MTRX and

Sulfasalazine. The sulfa pill is like a horse pill!

Thanks,

Immediately post-op you do have a lot of swelling of the stomach so I

crushed all meds I needed to take. I was on Darvocet post op at home and only

took

that for 5 days after surgery. So I had VERY little post op pain. Just

sorenesses like WAYYYY to many sit-ups.

I will warn you on this one with any weight loss surgery stay away from any

med that causes a nausea and vomiting. which I had a lot of on MTX...the

side effects were the reason I stopped taking.

Once returning back to normal diet and after four band adjustments I have NO

problems swallowing pills even some large pills.

The other good thing is that I had terrible b-vitamin deficiencies before

surgery so gastric bypass was not the choice for me with malabsorption. I have

had NO vitamin deficiencies or problems absorbing meds since surgery which

is real important to me. Since I know I will need meds for RA for life.

Since the weight loss tends to be gradual most bandsters do not go through

all the emotional upheaval that many experience after gastric bypass.

I do know there are a few band docs near you in the Houston area. Check out

obesity.com as well as think about joining DFWbandsters, bandbuddies, centex

bandsters, and smart bandsters. These groups have been a wealth of info for

me.

Do all your homework before you make a final decision.

Actually there was no link. I've been hearing on TV the last couple of days that studies indicate that obesity is caused by a virus; i.e. if somebody obese sneezes on you you have more of a chance of becoming obese. Ridiculous in my opinion. Just another reason for another vaccination.
