Guest guest
I flew out from Lexington, Kentucky and my airfare was under $500, but it was only that expensive because I waited until the last minute to get my tickets. My research indicates that I could get tickets 30 days in advance for between $250 and $300 normally. As for how I decided to go with Dr. Aceves over some other clinic in Mexico ... realistically ... Dr. Aceves was the only one where I could find a real good support group like this and a ton of people singing his praises. I had a hard time really investigating all the others. Everything with Dr. Aceves seemed transparent and above board. Greg P.

Dr Aceves did my lap band surgery and I have returned once for a fill. I live in Colorado and it is quite a trek when I do it all in one day but well worth it. I love the staff and the team at the hospital and it is like old home week when I return. Dr Aceves is the best there is and I did a ton of research before I had this done. Guest guest
Book as far in advance to save on air fare, Maybe you live near a larger down by not too many hours and can a have some drive your there and pick you up. that can save lots of money on air fare too as well as stress on your body. Why DR A, Every one is very positive about him and has a lot of good to say on his staff. Yes they are mostly lap band and I'm going as a Gastric Bypass, but still trust him. I already feel comfortable with his staff because every bandster that comes back talks about how good they were treated and when you are far from home that counts. My husband is going with me, and he'll be able to help me a lot, of course, he wouldn't have let me go without him but that is a moot point. Yes I'm willing too, to escape the prison of my body, I come from an obese family, and so far by strict dieting and smoking (the # 2 killer) I was able to keep my weight somewhere decent, but I found out I had a bladder condition this summer and all bets were off, that fat gene inside my family and my body broke loose like a prisoner running for his life, then you add the no smoking, which I can never do again. and BAM by JUne I was up to 185, I'm now 206 and trying hard to hold it there, but making Nina no promises, I swear, I can't even walk down a grocery story without gaining 5 pounds. Guest guest
This is what I did-- Booked a couple of weeks in advance and drove 3 hours to Dallas, Texas to save over $200.00 per ticket. We got off work and drove over and stayed in a Motel 8 that was 1/2 mile from the airport. Couldn't believe how clean and new it was for $40.00. They let you leave your car there for $3.00/night and give you a FREE shuttle to the airport. Couldn't believe that because it is $15-20/night to leave your car at the airport :-) So, we still saved over $300.00 after gas and everything. Thanks,Ally RE: Wanting to Band and trying to be sure about where? Guest guest
Tamela, Hi and welcome to the group! My name is Dana. I live in land so I know what you mean about a long haul to Mexico! It's well worth the trip though!! There are a lot of us Nurse's on this site, that's one thing that helped me decide to go. If nurse's are saying everything was great than I knew I'd be fine!! My best friend, also a nurse, was banded with me. We thought it was wonderful and have no regrets! There are alot of teacher's as well, like Penny and Jenni. All on this site seem well educated and I'm sure there are many professionals on here as well :-) I don't believe anyone has regretted having it done or with Dr.A & his team. I also looked into the other Mexican Dr's, nearly choose Monterey, but thought it was "deep" into Mexico, and "what if's" kept coming to mind...LoL. I'm sure I would have been find there. I choose Dr. A really based on his credentials, the testimonies, photos and this chat/site. As you may know, I took my daughter, Jacqui, this past July for her band. It was even better than I had remembered back in February when I was banded! They took such good care of her! It was her first surgery and was a "really good experience" she said! The support on this site and with Nina over the phone or through e-mails is phenomenal! I wish you all the best with whom ever you choose, and if It's Dr.A you will be in the best of hands!! Guest guest
Dr. A's fees are indeed quite fair and reasonable but that isn't why I chose him. I chose him because I did my research and I checked with other docs who know him. I verified his credentials, I talked to the staff. I did just about everything I could to narrow my choice down from five docs to 1, Dr. A. If I had it all to do over again I would certainly go to Dr. Aceves. Not a question about it. For me the bottom line is that I wasn't looking for a good deal, I was looking for a good doc. I happened to get both, a bonus? ;o) > > I live in North Carolina so going to Mexico is quite a hike. Guest guest
Hi , I was reading your post and am wondering how tall you are? I am 5'4 and weighed more than you at many points in the past few years. When I went for banding I weighed 200lbs. I am honestly wondering why you have chosen by-pass at such a low weight. Please, Please don't get me wrong, you know what's best for you. And I am with you on the obesity gene thing but, I feel that loosing 60-80lbs can easily be done with the band with a whole lot less risk to you. So, I guess am just stumped. :-0 You don't have to reply, but it would help some of us to understand your choice. :-) You know where all on here for each other!! Also, I don't know why the by-pass patients don't come on here?? I meet 2 at Almater and gave them the link but they never did get on. :-( Huggs... Guest guest
Dana Don't be shy, I rather you ask then pull away as a friend. I have a bladder disease call Interstitial Cystitis (IC). Since I found out, my body has been on a gaining mission. It's strange really I have fought my weigh tall my life, from 185 to 225, I was also a smoker. When I found out I had IC, I also found they did not know what caused it, nor was there a cure. What happens is the bladder lining dissolves, and every food had liquid and the liquids you drink are processed through your body, the kidneys, the finally the bladder, this liquid is very caustic to a bladder with no lining. I was very lucky had to great doctors, my reg MD and the Urologist. I have to take medications 3 times a day which is laying down a faux time of membrane, it gives me some relief, (keep in mind I was gong to the bathroom as much as 60 times a day, and 25 times a night. It makes for a very tired, tired girl. Many many food had to be cut out of my diet, no coffee, chocolate, no cokes of any kind, even if left flat the stuff they use in it could hurt my faux bladder, no citrus of any kind, no fruit (except pears and blueberries) I have to be extremely careful of preservatives, and even just the ones they spray on foods before they are shipping to grocery stores. I can't eat salads, because who wants to without salad dressing. So I figured the gastric by pass would be best for me and my diseases in the long run, many of the things you can't eat, I can't eat already. I also had to quit smoking and bam, there came some weight, I went from about 140 to 185 in a blink of 9 weeks. My family has two things running very strong in them obesity and diabetes, with some heart conditions, and high blood pressure mixed in. All because of the Obesity. I"ve had 11 cousins from 250 to 380 have the gastric by pass and only 1 has been a failure at it, mostly due to her own fault. The lap band would be great except it gives me too much room to eat sweets. I have a very wicked sweet tooth. I can't eat chocolate, but I can destroy those wicked big cinnamon buns. I think I need the controls the by pass puts on me for the first year to help me break bad habits, I'm working hard at them myself, not expecting the by pass to do it all. By the way, my IC diet consists of high protein and low carbs so it fits much better with the by pass. With the IC alone I must eat this way the rest of my life, the faux lining the medication only allow pain relief and some helping of the urge to go. I know this is turning into a book, but I've researched hard and long for the answer to my problem, and had many long distance talks with the 2 cousins I trust the most. Even My doctors have said it is ok for me to do it if I want. Them believing I really want to it. Where I live in this little small town women just don't do it. I've not known one woman to do it since I've lived here 5 years. But you can bet your nippy this woman is, because if I don't by Sept or DEC next year I'll be 300 pound. I say nip it in the bud now before it get out hand and starts me on the road to diabetes or heart condition. sorry for the book hugs
Guest guest
I flew to Mexico from New Jersey. My airfare was 393 for round trip (non stop to San Diego and 1 stop coming back) and i went over a holiday. Dr. Aceves and his crew are the best. Look at all of the doctors qualifications and the facilities qualifications. There are sites on the internet that tell you wha to look for when determining a place to go. I followed the list carefully and only 2 doctors had all of the qualifications. Dr. Aceves's prices were 2,500 less than the other doctors. It was the best decision of my life. Guest guest
The other doctor was Dr. Rumbaut. I actually started the process with them and scheduled a date with them but i was really unhappy with everything. I couldnt get ahold of anyone or i got short answers. Guest guest
I looked into three Mexico docs. Kuri in Tijuana, Rumbault (I forgot which city he was in) and Dr. A. Dr. A was the lowest price and gave the same or better services. Kuri was just across the border from San Diego but I just couldn't get a good fix from the Patient coordinator. The third doc was in Central Mexico and travelling there was more difficult and required a flight into Mexico. Not convenient and more expensive to travel back and forth. I chose Dr. A. because of his qualifications, his staff and their responsivesness and also because of the many people I met and corresponded with by web or in person. I have been most pleased. Could not have had a better hospital experience. Have had one fill (1.4cc). I'm working with the band and getting more familiar with it each day. Probably need another fill but plan to wait until about February to do so. Of course, I will fly back to Mexico to have Dr. A. do it. Think I will take hubby along and spend a weekend in San Diego and not rush back. the time difference is a killer to do it all in one day. It is about a 26 hour trip to do it all the same day. I'm getting too old and tired to keep those hours anymore! :-) Merry Christmas Everyone! Guest guest
I have been researching the lap band like crazy, I have found several doctors that have good reputations and I have spoken to a few of their assistants on the phone but I have chosen to go to Dr. A because for one Nina has been awesome and all the info they give you is just great. I also like the idea that you can go to them for fills. I live on Oahu and flying from here to San Diego isn't that expensive so that is another bonus. Also for me Dr. A's qualifications as a doctor have been so well praised he is about the only one I dont feel real nervouse about. I first looked into Dr. in Monterry but he was recently killed so he is out then a few since him. After reading all the great things about Dr. A I can't wai for my taxes to come in so I can get on with the first day of the rest of my life. You all have been soooo helpful Thanks Becky On 12/20/06, <ldccox@...> wrote: I looked into three Mexico docs. :-)Merry Christmas Everyone!
