Guest guest
Laurel: Hi, my name is Celia and I got my band Dec 10, 2005. I regards to your question, I am totally biased against the RNY, I think it is too risky : ( and have personally known people who have passed away from it. I would much rather try to convince you to get the lap band. I have lost 27 pounds in 2 months from it However, if you have already made up your mind to get an RNY then Dr. A is the best Doctor for the job. If you are to place your live in somebody elses hands, Dr. A is the most caring and most careful doctor I have met. He is an awesome human being who trully cares about the well being of his patients. You are definatelly in awesome hands Good luck Laurel, Celia > > Hello All, > > I have just recently been following the group. Guest guest
Thanks Celia, I appreciate the input. I have thought about the Lap-band but I am a little uncomfortable with the fill part of the, I know it doesn't make a lot of sense and I'm not sure why but, it grosses me out which isn't a deal breaker... maybe its because I'm scared of needles. I'm a little concerned about the constant follow up for tightenings (though I only live about 31/2 hours from Dr. Aceves). More importantly the long term rates of permanet weight loss and its my understanding that RNY is better for people who have a sweet tooth issue. That has been my thought process on the issue. However, I completely welcome any input for others and really appreciate it. Guest guest
Hi Laurel, Well, you never have to ask twice to get my two ccents worth! I had my surgery 8/11/05 have lost 51 lbs to date and have only had one fill. While getting that one fill I met a lady who'd already lost 100 lbs and she'd only had one fill!. If I remember correctly, there was a gentleman who posted a few months back who'd lost over 100 lbs and he'd NEVER had a single fill. This is NOT a high maintenance procedure especially if you follow Dr. Aveves rules and eat your protein first. I've watched an RNY patient as she dropped weight over the past two years. She lost approx 175 lbs and in her own words "looks like a SharPei Dog" unclothed! How romantic for her husband... So, early in January she underwent the first of several additional surgeries she needs, to have a complete lower body lift. She was on the operating table 9.5 hours to have only 1/2 of the excess skin removed. Insurance covered the RNY but NOT the rest of her surgeries. They put off having their house remodeled so she could have this surgery. Along with my 51 lb. loss I've also lost 53" from working out at CURVES at least 3 days a week. I am quite toned and have no sagging skin that I need to tuck into a special girdle like she did for over a year. Don't worry about the fills is what I'm getting at. So maybe you'll need 2 or 3 over the corse of a year. At $60+ a pop for the fluroroscopy (sp) that's nothing. And you truly don't feel a thing. Guest guest
How many fills do people need to get with the lap band and what is the cost if you go to Ar Aceves? Guest guest
Laurel: Well, I have only had one fill and I am loosing really well. Almost 30 pounds in 2 months! I also live 2 1/2 hours away from Dr. A. I drove there and back the same day I am also terrified of needles, but with Dr. A it only takes 2 pricks! One for the local anesthesia and the second one I didn't even feel! I chose not to look and my fill went just fine I believe with all my heart and soul that the band is a better alternative to the RNY. The RNY is too invasive and too traumatic for your body. You will be able to eat like a normal person but just in small portions. YOu loose weight slowly and your skin tends to sag less. Ultimatelly it is your decision, you will be the one taking the risks of such surgery. Again I want to reiterate, Dr. A is the best choice for this surgery or the lap band. His experience and personal attention are just unmatched. Again good luck Laurel Celia > > > > > > Hello All, > > > > > > I have just recently been following the group. Guest guest
I appreciate the input & support, I have been talking a lot with my husband, and shared some of the lap-band info with him. He was interested in the lower risk of complications with lap-band and said he would feel better about that. so I'm looking into it more. ( for those of you w/ boyfriend husband issues: it took awhile to get him o.k. with surgery, initially he was the same way, wanted me to work on diet and exercies, of course he's normal BMI very health, but eventually he admitted he was just really afraid of the risks and losing me, I think he was in denial that my weight is this this bad, and now he's become part of the process and wants to learn more) On Feb 7, 2006, at 8:17 PM, lizadeltastar wrote: > Hi Laurel, > > Well, you never have to ask twice to get my two ccents worth! > > I had my surgery 8/11/05 have lost 51 lbs to date and have only had > one fill. While getting that one fill I met a lady who'd already lost > 100 lbs and she'd only had one fill!.  If I remember correctly, there > was a gentleman who posted a few months back who'd lost over 100 lbs > and he'd NEVER had a single fill. This is NOT a high maintenance > procedure especially if you follow Dr. Aveves rules and eat your > protein first. > > I've watched an RNY patient as she dropped weight over the past two > years. She lost approx 175 lbs and in her own words " looks like a > SharPei Dog " unclothed! How romantic for her husband... So, early in > January she underwent the first of several additional surgeries she > needs, to have a complete lower body lift. She was on the operating > table 9.5 hours to have only 1/2 of the excess skin removed. > Insurance covered the RNY but NOT the rest of her surgeries. They put > off having their house remodeled so she could have this surgery. > > Along with my 51 lb. loss I've also lost 53 " from working out at > CURVES at least 3 days a week. I am quite toned and have no sagging > skin that I need to tuck into a special girdle like she did for over a > year. Don't worry about the fills is what I'm getting at. So maybe > you'll need 2 or 3 over the corse of a year. At $60+ a pop for the > fluroroscopy (sp) that's nothing. And you truly don't feel a thing. > > Liz<50.gif> > >  > > > > > > > > > > > Hello All, > > > > > > > > I have just recently been following the group. Guest guest
Laurel, The cost if fills is included with your fee, you just need to cover the cost of the x ray room to have it done with fluoro ( 70 dlls). The number of fills varies greatly, some patients need 1 and some need 6 so it depends on how much you get in each fill and how fast you are losign weight too.
