Guest guest
Hi Jo & Rick, You are both having the band?? That's great! You'll do fine but do expect to be uncomfortable on the plane...no other way around it unless you go 1st class$$$$. I would suggest those neck/ roll/ pillow things..sure wish I had one. Just remind yourselves...your sofa/bed is only 7hrs away!! Then you can stretch out and relax..the rest of the recover will seem like a breeze!! Wish you both great success!! Dana -------------- Original message -------------- From: "newtjo9" <newtjo9@...> My husband Rick and I (Jo) are scheduled for surgery Jan 30th. Am nervous but excited. Our flight to get home will be approx 7 hours. I am concerned about the length of flight-the discomfort after surgery and in general Airplane seats are not for the obese! Any helpful comments moral support will be appreciated. Also-has anyone done follow-up fills, etc in the Atlanta area?
Guest guest
himy surg was in June of last year,I did ok coming back home a little discomfort but managble . I live in the Atlanta area as well .I have not found a afforble doctor in the Atlanta area. I called many, doctors around here want as much as 2.000,just to walk thur the door and the cheapes for a fill 300.00 per fill, all the doctors here that i have talk to want money up front.I had two fills in Alban I paid 500.00 dollar i received 1cc the first time and the 2nd time he gave me 1/2cc the cost was the same ,I am sure if i go back again the fill will be less and the cost the same .plan on going to mexico for your fills.I am glad for the surg but the fills are the key to the weight, loss as I am sure you know, you see I line up a doctor before the surg .but not happy with the fills and now i am thinking about going back to Mexico. Guest guest
Congratulations Rick and Jo. Very cool you guys are doing this together. How wonderful to have such support right next to you. I only had to fly home to Phoenix, so I can’t comment on a 7 hour flight. Others will surely respond to that. has the best airport story ever. You know, I traveled alone and was mildly uncomfortable. I was slow and hunched over, but just took it slow. It was ok. I checked in at the gate desk and asked for early boarding due to medical issues. They let me go right in and I sat in the front row. Do this and you and Rick can just take the whole front row and spread out a bit. Again, congratulations guys. Welcome back to life. Guest guest
I love it that you and your husband are doing this together. It will make your life so much easier because you will both have your own in house support system. I too will have a 7 hour flight. and then a 2 hour drive to get home. I'm having gastric bypass with Dr A, exactly one week from today, don't know if I should be doing the happy dance, or nervous nellie. My husband is going with me, he will be my rock and walking partner. I understand there will be others out there getting banded while I am there so I'm hoping I can do some walking with them and give my husband a break, I've heard there is a mall a short ride away and maybe he can even get out of the hospital and go there if I have some walking partners. Ok the plane ride, I'm a bit scared of that, but I keep thinking to myself it is only 7 hours then I cna stretch out more in the car as we drive home. WE are flying out of Mobile Al and we live in Florida about 40 minutes east of Pensacola. I've been told by more experienced folks to take the neck band (check) a pillow for stomach support if not for sleeping on( check) gas-X strips for gas from the surgery that might cause pain ( to be gotten today). And if you feel the need get up and walk on the plane, walk back and forth and no give a care what others look at you like because remember, after the flight they will never see you again and if they did, you will have lost so much weight that they won't even recognize you. if you come up with anymore thoughts pass them to me. Guest guest
... The GasX strips come in strips and it also comes in a chewable tablet. Personally, I prefer the chewable tablets. They taste better (berry flavor), they chew down quickly to a liquid, they are double the strength of the strips and that makes them cheaper in the end. I prefer GasX w/Maalox. After you use up the Liquid Tylenol you'll get from the hospital and you need to replace it eventually, Tylenol comes in chewable tablets too. Sudafed comes in strips, lots of drugs come in strips and chewables now. Walgreens is a great source of these products. As for the mall, there are shopping places around however they are not unique to Mexico. Meaning, most of the stuff in the malls are purchased by the store owners from the US. So keep that in mind. It is chilly there this time of year, certainly not what it is like in the midwest but during the day it's probably in the 60's. I'm from Arizona, 60's is COLD! Extra pillow is fine but I wouldn't bring one. They will give you an extra pillow at the hospital. You'll want to keep it as simple as possible. Mostly just walk, walk, walk. Do laps up and down the halls, do anything you need to so you can keep walking. A long plane ride might be a bit uncomfortable with the gas so keep up with the GasX and walking. Good luck to you! > > I love it that you and your husband are doing this together. Guest guest
I think the worst part of flying is trying to fit into the bathrooms! YUCK! My flight was about 5 hours (broken up by switching planes) but it wasn't bad. The ride home was actually better then flying there- I guess nerves or something. Good luck to both of you! My best advice is to PACK LIGHT. I didn't but I was so glad to have someone there to help me with my bags b/c you will not feel like pulling a load! > > My husband Rick and I (Jo) are scheduled for surgery Jan 30th. Guest guest
The best advise that I can give you is to purchase 3 seats for the 2 of you. That way you can be more assured of not having to squeeze into 1 seat each and hope that the 3rd one is not occupied. I have made the flight from Orlando, Florida - so it was a pretty long flight. --- Amy <areynolds3@...> wrote: > Not much you can do with that 7 hr flight im from ny > and have been to mexico 3 times in 6 months wow > never got better take a portable DVD player helps > with the time passing.. > amy from ny > scheduled for jan > 30th > > > My husband Rick and I (Jo) are scheduled for > surgery Jan 30th. Guest guest
Congratulationswith your decision!!!!! You have been getting some excellent feedback from our nice group. I chose the Lap-band because a friend of mine had a lot of trouble with the gastric bypass. I am sure that she was in the small percentage group, but it did keep me from going that route. Others who have had the gastric bypass have lost a LOT of weight, and then over time gained it back. The band offers a lot more flexability with filling it and unfilling it as your life changes. The recooperation time with the band is very short. I had the surgery done on Tuesday, and went back to work on Monday. The worst part of this is the couple of weeks on clear liquids, but that passes quickly. Hee, Hee...I pretty much thought of this as a " right of passage " to being a banster. I feel great!!!! Good Luck with your decision and let me know how it goes. B. --- Abbigail Kadar <abbikadar@...> wrote: > I am scheduled for the 1st of February. Guest guest
Hi Abbi, Dana here. I had my band done Feb 1st of 06 and have lost approx 62lbs!! I had 60-80lbs to lose. I am happy at this weight of 140 -give or take and am glad I have my band. The key really is the fills..without them..little if anything happens. I personally believe the safety/complications risks of the band are far less than by-pass and was in no way willing to risk being in the % of severe complications that I am aware of. A nurse co-worker of mine, who does home care, has taken care of many by-pass patients that survive on TPN only.(intravenous nutrition). Others with malnutrition, bowel irregularities..you name it. I know many, many people do well and know two good friends that have done very well. It can be a great solution to an otherwise bad situation. I feel that many health factors like heart disease, HTN and Diabetes should help decide if by-pass or the band will have the most impact long-term. From what I have read, the band 2 yrs post -op is equal to the weight loss of by-pass pts 2 yrs out. It may take a little longer with the band to get the weight off initially, but if after 2yrs the weight- loss is the same as by-pass why take the risks?? Just my opinions..Both surgeries require huge lifestyle changes and the support needed is great as well. Support from family and this board is invaluable!! Good luck with whatever you choose. Let us know what you decide ok? Dana --------- scheduled for jan> > 30th> > > > > > My husband Rick and I (Jo) are scheduled for> > surgery Jan 30th. Am > > nervous but excited.
