Guest guest
Amy, Everyone's initial activation is different and it's not uncommon at all to actually not like or even hate the first few days, weeks or even more.. Just know that it WILL get better with time. It takes time for your brain to sort the sounds as it's been a while since you've heard many of them. Some people can hear and understand right away, others take a while. this is where the patience comes in. Just practice listening and it will come to you. No one can predict the exact time you will say Oh yeahhh.. I think I've got it. Repition practice is good for starting out. there are several online sites to practice with and even if you don't understand the sounds right off the bat, you will begin to hear a pattern and figure out which words go with which pattern. Please hang in there.. It's your first day and the fact that you hear sound is very good. I'm looking forward to hearing of your progress. Some people keep a journal of their journey.. I wish I had done that as it's often very helpful to future candidates who want to know the why's and whens of hearing with their ci. Wishing you all the best. Guest guest
Hi. My first month was a bit hard because the sound was so different that it would distract me from even lip reading. I gradually got to where it did improve my lip reading a lot and now once in awhile I can make out what is said in the other room. Give it some time. susan & hobbes michigan At 11:34 PM 8/23/2004 +0000, you wrote: >Activation was today and it is very weird. I'm not liking the sound at >all. Guest guest
That's normal for most of us. I have heard some got a clear understanding right from the start. Everyone is different. In my case the first day and half was awful. Sounds didn't make any sense at all but I did notice improvements along the way. After the second day I was listening to people and couldn't believe I was hearing the parts of words being said I know I could not hear before. Like the T's and S's I was actually picking them up finally. All the high frequency sounds suddenly came back to life for me. You will begin to identify the new sounds everyday and there will be times you will be shocked at what you are hearing. Just the other day I was already enjoying the sounds of the crickets chirping. But when one of the crickets flew right by my face it was chirping as it flew. I was in shock hearing this. I never knew they could fly and chirp at the same time. This Wednesday I go in for my third mapping. It's been two weeks since my last one. I know I will be getting a better program set in my CI and I know the sounds will sound clearer and louder for me. I'm really excited about the new mapping coming. Just remember it gets better all the time. Good luck ) Tad > Activation was today and it is very weird. I'm not liking the sound at all. Guest guest
Followed by a turn on was a tune up. I went back today for the second adjustment. Prior to the adjustment, I would kinda sorta know what I was hearing and then my brain just fell apart. Nothing made sense. That was frustrating. Post adjustment: the high frequencies are weird. Some women and all children sound like voices flooded with helium, although men's voices are easier, but not 'normal.' For the most part I understand what is being said, mostly, okay... all with lip reading. I've been in a lot of places innundated with sound and right now I'm happy to hear pretty much nothing except my fingernails on the keyboard... With several sounds, it is easier to sort them, but in a restaurant, it is hard and tiring too. People look at me funny when I hit the cups, glasses and plates on the table... just to 'listen...' Surely it will be an interestion road to audition... I am off to listen to a roomful of four and five year old sing their graduation song. My son's teachers had the kids rehearse for the last week or so, since they wanted me to 'hear' the kids sing because I couldn't hear them in June. Guest guest
Wonderful progress you are making! Keep up the great work with Sound and Beyond...you will soon be soaring amongst the eagles, with sound.  ________________________________ From: " halfencer@... " <halfencer@...> Sent: Tue, June 8, 2010 12:45:33 PM Subject: Turned on today  I was sequentially implanted with the Nuc 5 system on June 26 and the turn on was today. I did not use a hearing aid with that ear and it only heard at two low tones at very loud levels so it's been basically unstimulated for eight years. My impressions so far are that the surgery went much easier this time than last although that maybe because I knew what to expect. I only took one pill of Tylenol with codeine and for two nights I took a regular Tylenol as compared to last time when I used Tylenol plus for nearly two weeks. Last time I took a picture of a great looking sutured scar covering half my scalp and this time I can't find anything to take a picture of. It's easy to feel the bump of the old implant but I can't find the new really thin one. I didn't get the cartoon character voices this time on turn on. It's still turned on a really soft setting right now so I don't get much help from it when it's on by itself but when I turn on the 3G with it, wow, suddenly sound seems more full and it's like it comes from everywhere itstead of one indistict place. My Volkswagen engine makes many more noises than I was picking up with just one ear-it's like before I just heard Kur and now I hear Kur-plunckiddy Plunk. I off to try the Sound and Beyond training packet. Thursday I'm scheduled for a retune to try to turn up the volume.
