Guest guest
Evel, You're getting closer to surgery and wishing you well through every step of the journey back to the hearing world. You are right to listen to your dr when it comes to which ear to use and glad you are comfortable with the reasons he gave you. Please let us know when the BIG DATE is. We'll be thinking about and taking your journey along with you. Guest guest
Alice, Actually, I had the same type of loss originally in both ears(nerve deafness, unknown cause) I then was involved in a car accident which fractured my skull and ruptured my right eardrum.. I lost all speach sounds in that ear and never regained it.. That is the reason for the surgeon's opinion on which ear to implant.. Naturally I want the best possible outcome so I am going along with his decision. It looks like I will be implanted at Strong Memorial in Rochester NY. My surgeon will be Dr. Dutcher.. Has Anyone on here had him for their Implant surgery? Cheers, Evel > Wow...Great news and wonderful attitude, Evel. It's always very exciting to follow someone thrut this process. Good luck with your scan today and then it's on to the date. Where will you have your implant done and who is your surgeon? > > Your hearing loss in each ear is from a different cause? That's very interesting and something you don't hear very often. Does the doctor feel your hearing ear is best because the other side would not be a candidate due to medical reasons? > > Keep asking those questions as they come to mind. There are bound to be more and as you already know, this group really loves to answer them. > > Alice > > > Update from Evel > > > Hi all, > Hope the Holidays were great for everyone ) > > Just a little update: I am going for my CT scan this morning, then I > meet with the Psychologist, then back to My surgeon in Feb. at which > time we will set the BIG date.. This is confusing to me.. If I had a good ear, I would not consider giving up my hearing in that good ear to be implanted.. ?? Seems like you would wind up with worse hearing than when you started?? Seems like you would wind up with worse hearing than when you started?? not really ... the good ear tends to have more audio memory, so it does make sense to go ahead implanting good ear for more rapid outcome. Implanting bad ear is also good too, but it will take longer for maximum result. In my case, both my ears had about the same amount of loss. I could chose either ear but decided to implant the ear that had been simulated with hearing aid for over 40 years, while my other ear hasn't worn hearing aid for about 25 years. I did that only because I want the best probable outcome. Glad I gave up my hearing aid for implant. Lee

I see that you have hearing loss in both ears. Pam
Guest guest
Pam, Sorry about the confusion.. I thought most readers on here would know what I meant.. Both my ears are BAD Right one has been DEAF for 23 years.. Just that like someone already answered I choose the " better " ear to have the MAXIMUM chance of getting the most from my CI.. Its not 100% that it will work out that way, but research has shown that most of the time the ear that had the most recent hearing does better than one like in my case that has not heard sound in 23 years.. Guest guest
Alice, Thanks.. Yes I feel good now with stiches out.. All is well except for some of my taste.. I still eat taste or not LOL.. My Audie is on Vac. so I could not schedule hook-up date.. Hope to know in a week or so what the BIG date will be.. I do very well with my children and most of the people I am close with.. Can't wait to add some sound though ) I just installed a new hard drive, CD-RW, DVD and Video card on my PC here at home to give me something to do.. I also LOVE to read and just started a new Dean Koontz Book.. I also have to get caught up with my journal.. Hope ya have a great Easter.. Evel > Hi Evel, > > It's great to hear from you and I'm especially glad to hear you are doing well. It's a great feeling when those stitches come out so you are likely going to feel even better today. I'm glad you are coping well with the period between surgery and hook up. Lip- reading the kids can be difficult so if you are managing that, you are doing quite well. Let us know as soon as you can the date of your activation. That will be an exciting day for your entire family but especially you. > > Happy Holidays to you as well and thank you. > > Alice > > > >
Guest guest
Thanks! It will take me some time to learn all this new language but I'm catching on! It all makes perfect sense now. I have also discovered there is NO ryme or reason for how a person sounds! Big, small, tall, short, it does not matter, as everyone sounds different. I am so happy that you are doing sooooooooooo well with your new CI! the above statement from you is sooooooo true! I find that i can ID who talking just by listening.... it used to be i have to look around to see who talking,, no more! Lee
