I have long hair (that falls halfway down my back) and am curious how the surgeon would work around it. Would I need to have my hair cut to shoulder length or can the surgeon pull back my hair to shave only what is needed? it depends on the surgeon, my hair wasnt touched at all as my incision was right at the fold of earlobe. Guest guest
Granted, mine was short anyway, but I was happy to see that they'd only shaved a little bit above my ear. Less than inch of hair was shaved off! I was VERY happy about that. Hopefully your hair would be pulled as far out of the way as possible and only a little above your operated ear would be shaved off. -Jeff > > Hi ! > > > > I don't have CI yet so I'm curious what you guys feel, pride of > having CI, > > etc. I am never proud of my hearing aids. Guest guest
lisa my surgeon only cut a square inch of my hair. i didnt even notice any hair was missing. my hair is just below the shoulders. you can have hair any length. sometimes the bte head coil and wire get little tangled up in my hair but not big deal. keep in mind you wont be able to wash your hair in shower for a week after surgery until the scar heals. u can have someone help u wash it and keep the incision covered a couple of times before you can safely shamppo without worrying about incision. so you can have hair any length you want. joni

Guest guest
When I had my surgery 2 and a half years ago, the smaller incision hadn't yet become popular so I have a long scar and my head was shaved quite a bit.. but.. it was shaved underneath so that I was able to wear a pony tail so the shaved area wasn't too noticeable. Only trouble I have now is that the shaved side of my hair grew back in nice and thick.. often thought of saving the other side to get matching waves, but.. small price to pay to have regained my hearing ability! I also took towel and covered my incision while my sister washed my hair.. No way could I make it a week without washing this mop..LOL but most definitely.. follow your dr's instructions on this one. They do make a waterless shampoo for those who aren't allowed to get their head wet.. not the same as getting a good washing, but it does serve the purpose for temporary fixes. Guest guest
Even though I'd be willing to cut all my hair off for a CI, it's nice that I won't have to. Guest guest
, Yeah. I was going to ask about the waterless shampoo but you beat me to it. No way could I go without washing my hair for a week either, but if it means better hearing, I'll do it!! <smile> Re: Hair and CI Surgery When I had my surgery 2 and a half years ago, the smaller incision hadn't yet become popular so I have a long scar and my head was shaved quite a bit.. but.. it was shaved underneath so that I was able to wear a pony tail so the shaved area wasn't too noticeable. Guest guest
, I don't know if it makes any difference between adults and children, but my daughter was just implanted last week. She was born with quite a bit of hair, but they shaved just where the incision is. Her incision is about 5 inches long, but once she gets the staples out you will hardly be able to tell. We were able to shampoo her hair 2 days later. Guest guest
Gretchen, I can't see pictures on the Internet, so I had no idea how long the incision is or how much hair is shaved off. I always thought they shaved a good portion of hair but perhaps that was more commonly done when CIs were in their infancy. By the way, how old is your daughter? I wish you both much success on your CI journey!! Guest guest
, I actually saw pictures on the internet and I was horrified!! I was afraid to remove her bandages because I didn't want to see what they did to her beautiful curly hair. It was absolutely nothing like I expected. The pictures I saw had the whole side of their heads shaved. Ahnika (sounds like without the M) is 15 months old and has had profound bilateral hearing loss since birth. We tried hearing aids which did nothing for her. The audiologist told us if it was important to us that she hear speech, this was the only way to go. We almost backed out at the last minute but decided to go through with it. We just hated to put her through it. She's been through so much already. She has several other medical problems as well. She's done really well with surgery. I only hope it works. Do you have a surgery date yet? Wish you well!! Guest guest
, I like long hair, so dont touch yours. Hehehe. When I went for my CI, I told the surgeon to shave my head. I was due for a haircut and figured I would save me the cost that one time. Wrong! I asked him later why he didnt do it. I think he was chicken. ROFL Naturally, I was VERY anxious to get that mop cut and had to wait for the incision to heal. G-r-r-r-r! By the way, the surgery was a no brainer. Errrrrp, no no, it was easy on me. Was back in my room 10 minutes when my friend came back with Gimlet. When Gimlet saw what was on my head, she flew up on the bed harness and all, snuggled right up alongside me. That caught even me off guard. Aint she sweet. We left about 2-3 hours later, got lunch, then cruised around in my friend's BMW with the top down. The only problem I had was the coffee....I had a raging waterfall inside my head and could not hear my friend too well. LOL It went away quickly and I went to decaf for a week. I wonder if she will rent a Jaguar the 2nd time around since she sold her BMW...I love those Jags! Hehehehe. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate. & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
Gretchen, Yes! I remember reading a few posts from you already. <smile> (I just joined the list a week or two ago.) I'm so glad Ahnika's (what a pretty name <smile>) surgery went well! Her being implanted at such a young age I'm sure will do wonders for her language development. In regards to where I am in the CI process, the implant center received my CI application last week. They notified me today that my evaluation will be on June 11th. I was pleasantly surprised because I thought I'd have to wait 2 months or longer. With all of the things I'm busy with these days (social work internship, volunteering at my local deafblind center, church activities), June 11th will be here in no time. Guest guest
Alice, I may not have mentioned this before, but I'm totally blind. However, I have someone who can describe the pictures to me. )Now, who is that gonna be? just kidding!) Actually, I have a sighted friend who is HoH and interested in CIs. I'll e-mail him and ask him to describe the pics for me. Thanks for the link -- I hate not having an idea of what things look like and I'm sure these pics will help me understand what my head and ear may look like after the surgery. Guest guest
; I felt the same way about my daughter's locks. She has beautiful black hair that falls past her shoulders. She is almost 2 & we are expecting to get a CI surgery date for this summer. I wondered if they would have to cut her hair. The surgeon said that they usually do shave the little boys, but he'll only cut a small amount near the incision site with her. I was happy about that, but if we would have had to lob it all off, we would have in a minute. Regards, Debby Mom to Lindsi, who will be 2 on Sunday!! > Even though I'd be willing to cut all my hair off for a CI, it's nice that I > won't have to. > > > > Re: Hair and CI Surgery > > > In a message dated 5/10/2004 1:25:36 PM Pacific Standard Time, > Jonikt4@A... writes: > keep in mind you wont be able to wash your hair in shower for a week after > surgery until the scar heals. > > I washed mine in 3 days, each surgeon have their own ways of doing things... > my hair wasnt shaved. > > Lee > > >

Guest guest
Hal, LOL! I don't feel so worried now. At least I won't have to worry about losing most of my hair. I thought I would have to cut it shoulder length, but as I said before, I wouldn't mind cutting all my hair off if it meant being able to hear! Guest guest
, My daughter is also considered deaf/blind. We know she can see but there are obvious vision issues. They have diagnosed her with delayed maturation, but are kind of leaning toward cortical vision impairment. She has made great progress with her vision in the last 15 months. Up until she was probably 5 months old we couldn't get her to track anything at all. At that time we wondered if she was blind too. It just killed my heart. Now she is tracking side to side and up very well. We are still working on looking down. She has made some progress, but we are still working on it. If you have any suggestions at all of anything that we can do to help her along developmentally, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gretchen Re: Hair and CI Surgery Gretchen, Yes!
