Before I had the band installed I was on

17 meds including injecting insulin. Since surgery I am on NONE. Unfortunately

sleep apnea was not corrected for me by the weight loss. The good news,

however, is that for many, if not most, it is. I have severe obstructive apnea

and have had 2 surgeries to correct this. I was trached for 14 years before

bi-pap was able to take over. I lost all of the weight once before and it didn’t

make any difference with the apnea so I really didn’t think it would this

time either. The list of things it HAS helped is tremendous, however, so I can’t

really hold the apnea against it J The causes of apnea are still not fully understood and there are

several different forms. For the most part weight loss can contribute greatly

to correcting, if not stopping, the symptoms.

Severe Sleep Apnea

Hi, I'm very new to this and am researching the lap

band surgery with Dr.

Aceves. I'm new to group messages and chat rooms and all of those kind of

things.

I have a really BIG question? Has the lap band surgery helped those of you

with severe sleep apnea? I am about at my wits end with the lack of sleep

and the headaches that I am experiencing with the sleep apnea. I am using a

C-Pap nightly but still never sleep 8 hours more like 2-3 hours then up for

4 hours then back to sleep for 2-3 hours. I have changed my diet, sleeping

quarters, etc. etc.

Please advise if you have / are going through this and if the surgery has

helped.

THANK YOU!!!!!!

Dear Spicy Nut

I have been told that the loss of weight will help with snoring and sleep

apnea. One of my children has been diagnosed and sleeps wtih a C-Pap.

Because of your difficulty sleeping, I would suggest, just my child's doctor

suggested, that you take yourself off all caffeine. You might also restrict

yourself in order to minimize any physical activity in the evenings in order

to give yourself tme to " settle down. " I don't know how long this cycle of

sleep interruption has lasted, but you may need an additional sleep study to

analyze your difficulty. You may have already taken steps to make sure your

mattress and pillow are the best to provide you with a good night's sleep.

I use a sleep number bed and a wonderful new and expensive pillow from the

sleep store. Both of those have improved my nighttime rest tremendously.

If your spouse (or sleep partner) is a snorer or someone who flails their

arms or have disturbing dreams, that may also be interrupting your sleep.

Do you have a pet that jumps on and off your bed at night? Little things

like this can interrupt your sleep patterns. Street noise, light in a

window are also other things that can contribute to sleep disturbances.

Take an inventory of your sleep quarters to eliminate everything that may be

disturbing you. I need peace, quiet, and darkness. I also make sure that

which ever postion I am in that no LED clock or light is shining within

close proximity to my face. There is one other thing that might be

disturbing your sleep and that is that you may be pre-menopausal. I was

just speaking with an ARNP about her sleep disorder today that she is

attributing to her " stage in life. "

Best of luck in your research and in getting a good night's sleep.

I never experienced that myself but I have read posts on various message boards from tons and tons of others who DO experience this. They say losing weight has made a complete difference in their sleep patterns. They don't even use their C-Pap anymore becaue they no longer need it. They sleep well at night and overall they feel so much better.

So to answer your question, yes. This surgery will lead you to lose weight and your breathing will be much more stable.

Dear :

Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to respond to my question it

means a lot to me! I think it really is boiling down to the peri-menopausal

thing from what I have been able to read and what you just said as well. I

have eliminated everything else and done all of the other things that you

have suggested. One additional thing to, is I am not watching any type of

violence on TV before bedtime. No news, No CSI shows like em but their

graphic.

, thanks again for your time it is SINCERELY appreciated.

Hi Spicey, I had severe sleep apnea before the surgery and I now sleep like a baby. Before the surgery I would get up about 3 or 4 times a night gasping for air, I would have to sleep with 3 pillows with my head rised up, because if not I would get up gasping for air. Not only would I have trouble sleeping on back, but because I was so heavy when I would sleep on my side my arms would fall asleep and that would wake me up. My PCP always said if I would loose weight I would sleep much better. I have lost 72 lbs since July 1, 2006. I've been stuck for a while now and am in need of another fill, but I think I will do it after I celebrate the BIG

40. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TO ALL OF US ARIES. Vegas here I come. I can't believe I'm turning 40, March 27, but feel like a whole new person. Spicey, good luck with your decision. Happy Friday to everyone. burr Burr <historicalmarker@...> wrote: Hi, I'm very new to this and am researching the lap band surgery with Dr. Aceves. Dear Craig:

Thank you SO MUCH for your honest responses. It sounds as if you have been

through a lot with your own story. Thank you for being there and sharing

your story with me. I'm truly grateful to have found this website and to be

able to connect with others who are in similar situations.

It took me a little while to figure out the terms you were using on the

bottom of the page but the light bulb went off and I got it! You had your

surgery just a little over a year ago and you've lost 154 pounds!!! Way to

go Craig.

Thanks for being an inspiration to me and making me realize that

Thanks again for taking your time to respond.

I believe that

for the majority of people apnea is cured or at least greatly reduced with

weight loss. In my case that isn’t true but I don’t think that is

the norm. The number of conditions that DO ease up with weight loss are great. You

won’t be sorry. I am far far far from an angel J but I, like everyone

Mardy: I hope your interrupted sleep is a cycle that ends soon. From my

own experience, I offer one other comment: If you are having trouble

sleeping or you wake up and can't get back to sleep, get out of bed and go

to another room. Don't struggle with the inability to sleep while you are

lying in bed. There is a psychological factor here and you don't want to

set up some type of association with lying in bed with an inability to " get

to sleep. " When this has happens to me, I get out of bed, go to a recliner

and watch TV. If I fall asleep in the chair, so be it. Some rest is better

than none. Grab it when you can, whether in a comfortable chair or in an

afternoon nap.

Best of luck.

Mardy, I have a question. Do you have fibromyalgia? I thought I had a sleep problem but later found out is was fibromyalgia which, as many people know, has a horrible effect on your sleep. Once I got on some medication for that, I slept MUCH better. Now, since my surgery and losing so much weight, I don't take any more medicine for the sleep problems I had due to my fibromyalgia.
