Guest guest
Hi Kim, I know you are mainly asking Nina but I will put in my 2 cents worth. You probably are one of those (like me) who didn't feel much restriction at all until a fill. I couldn't sense my band either. When Dr. A asked if I could feel the capful of water I had swallowed, I looked at him like "huh?". So don't worry about that. When you get to a good fill level, you will know it is there, believe me. Please don't try and "test" the band by gulping your liquids or eating real food. You need to remember that even though you can't feel it, it is there and it is healing. The longer you stay on liquids and give it time to heal, the better. I know you are starving, and it feels like you are starving to death. If you can make it through the first 6 weeks post op, that is the worst time! After that, you can eat solids and you will forget all about the 6 weeks of liquids. It is kinda like childbirth, you forget about all the pain pretty soon. I know taking pills is hard after surgery. I couldn't stand crushed either. I used a cutter and cut up my pills into tiny tiny pieces, very tiny and swallowed one at a time with sips of water or Gatorade. If I had 10 pieces, that is what I did. It would take a while, but it was better then the crushed yucky taste. M 280/180/155 -100lbs gone for good! Guest guest
Kim, I would like to add to 's response. The draining is normal, just let it drain and keep it clean, please do not put anything inside it, it is healing from the inside out. You can cover it with a gauze over it to protect your clothes. Do not worry about knots just pull on one end and the stitch will come out, you cannot leave them there.Pull steadily and firmly and it will come out, do not be afraid it is not painful. We had a patient come in for a fill this week that did not feel her band, either, we were joiking that maybe nothing was put indise, etc. She got her fill and still was not sure about the sensation of "feeling" her band, one day after her fill she write sme and says she now knows what it feels like and is thankful to be able to tell how it works. Wait for you fill and you will see how it feels and how it works. Hang int here, once you move to another stage ( mushy) things will get better and before you k now it you will be on the solid food stage. Remember this stage is for healing, very important. Guest guest
thanks for the kind words of advice! I will hang in there. eating more jello is helping right now. I eat 2 snack paks at lunch, then the other meals tea and broth and juice. next week will be exciting... yougurt! woowoo!I guess I was hoping I wouldn't have to go down for a fill so soon. NINA: how far in advance do i need to book it? I know to wait after my 8 weeks, which would be April 8. I know I have to find my way there (at least to the border).Argh, ok, cut up pills, and think I'm eating a chicken when I drink my broth! Guest guest
I too couldn't feel my band at all after I got it and then I got a fill and they only put in 6cc and I still couldn't feel it. Well this week I went back and got another 6cc added to it and now I can definately feel it. Is it normal to not be able to eat solid food for awhile. It feels so tight whenever I eat anything and I had never PB'd before I'd gotten filled but I have PB'd several times since I got the 2nd fill and after hearing all these stories of slippage I am paranoid that it is going to slip. It doesn't seem like I've gotten a lot of fluid in there so should I really be that restricted? Guest guest
Jocelyn, Sounds like you may be a little to tight, and less liquid can make you dehydrated which will make you even tighter, If you can't eat solids go back to liquids for a few days and try again, if you still PB on solids GO HAVE AN UNFILL, it took me three months of PB after a tight fill before my band slipped, I wish I had listened to others , YOU NEVER WANT TO HAVE to tight of a fill. Guest guest
Hi Yeah, I had to ask that question myself! These experienced bandsters have their own language and I think we need a glossary for us newbies!!!!! I understand it to be " productive burping " which i guess is a nice way to say puking....altho I don't consider puking to be productive....actually it is very hard on the body!!!!!!!! so I think I will be a rebel and still refer to it as puking!!!! Hey (techgurl) that is something you could add to your website, a bandster glossary and defintion of terms!!! > > Hi Kim, I know you are mainly asking Nina but > > I will put in my 2 cents worth. Guest guest
Hey , I know we have some weird Lingo. I know you will catch on fast. :0) Regarding Productive Burping. It is way different than puking. The food never gets to your stomach so it does not have that horrible bile taste. It is just food that may get stuck that you have to try and burp up. Honestly, I hate puking. I would try anything and everything to prevent that. PB'ing is nothing like it. It freaked me out to just think about it before my first fill. After you experience it you will realize that it is nothing to worry about. Of course if you are good and eat slow you may never have to PB. I on the other hand am always in a hurry a do it too much. You take care, Diva's Update> > > > > > > > Hi Nina (and all!):> > I think I'm down because taking my anti-depressant> > is difficult right > > now (crushed in water makes me want to throw up). > > So read the > > following with that in mind:> > My port incision is very pinkish-red still draining.> > My other > > incisions are doing ok, only I can't find the knots> > anymore and am > > worried about trying to remove the stitches this> > wknd.> > I feel like I'm suffering from Irritable Bowel> > Syndrome! Guest guest
Hey Thanks for the clarification on the productive burping vs puking! I think I get it! ha ha, so while we are being gross......PBing is kinda like hocking a loogy......????!!!! Look, all I can say, is I really really hope I don't experience this, but I bet 10 to 1 I will. I outeat anyone anytime, chew my food at the most twice......so I think I'll be learning the hard way. I can't even believe that in less than 2 weeks I will be going through some of these scary things I've been reading about: diarrhea, gas, STARVATION, more diarrhea, more gas.....PBing....oh man, it's enough to scare a person out of going through with it. Its never been the surgery I fear, its the after stuff I'm reading about now!!! And I'm kinda worried too about going back to work just a few days afterwards.....if these symptoms haven't stopped, how can I work? Oh well, I guess I better just get to that point instead of worrying about it now. > > > Hi Kim, I know you are mainly asking Nina but > > > I will put in my 2 cents worth. Guest guest
Hey , I know you are hearing a lot of crazy stuff. Actually the good WAY out weighs the bad with the band. The first 2 weeks after surgery I did have diarrhea. I think it was from the anesthesia and then from all the liquids. I have heard someone use the phrase "liquids in, liquids out". You are on a clear liquid diet for the first 2 weeks. Then you can go on to thicker soups and then to mushies. The "starvation" people talk about is mainly during the liquid stage. For me, I just got tired of the sweet tasting protein drinks and broths. I don't think I ever want to eat jello again either. Bottom line though, is that is only for 2 weeks. Once I moved on to creamy soups, yogurt, etc. I was fine. Then before you get your first fill you are eating normal foods. I would never give my band back. I am the worst about PB'ing because I am always in such a darn hurry. It is not bad at all. Believe me, being in a size 10 pants instead of my 20's makes it all worth it. I would not give my band back for a million dollars. Money cannot replace how great I feel. I pray you will be banded soon and experience the miracle of the band. Oh yeah, I don't want to forget kudos to Dr Aceves. He made this dream a reality for me and he and Nina have been there if ever I have needed anything or if I ever have questions. I can't wait to go back for a fill and see them again :0) You have a great day! Guest guest
Practice your chewing NOW...you definitely WILL PB if you don't chew slowly and thoroughly. Believe me, I still have to be careful of wolfing down my food and I am 4 + mos post op. I never felt like I was STARVING...ever...but I can't eat in the mornings, I am too tight, so I am pretty hungry by the time I can actually eat most days...I find I do better if I DON'T sit down to eat. Take a bite, walk away and chew, chew, chew....do a little chore or read a couple emails...then go back for another bite. I do sit down for supper with my hubby tho...just not other meals. When I am at work, I walk during my lunch hour, and nibble a protien bar as I go. You just have to find the method that works best for YOU...and you will, don't worry!BIG HUGS, AND GOD'S BLESSINGSDawnita MayLowpass, Oregon10/05/05 dob "Iraida" 209/167/135 5ft 3inches See Mylatest photos at: http://dawnita1961.myphotoalbum.com/
Guest guest
I'm with you, too, on the standing up! If I walk around a little I can usually go sit down for a few more bites--taken slooooowly! And then walk a little more.
