Guest guest
I can tell you that I went to Dr. Aceves for my surgery and I am very pleased. I go to Dr. Trace Curry for my fills and I am also very pleased. Newbie here with lots of questions to come Hi Everyone! Does anyone know offhand the least expensive time of the year to fly to Mexico (from Ohio)? I havn't had a chance to check out the rates. Not just for the banding procedure...I am wanting to know more for the " back and forth " visits for fills. I know it would be cheaper to find someone here to do the fills, but I haven't exactly gotten squared away either! Do you know if the new AR band is used? Thanks for taking a minute to help me out, I will probably not be back online until tomorrow night, so I'll see ya then! Also, did I read on one of these recent posts that Inamed appointed Dr. Aceves to teach a lot of other doctors how to do the procedure? I could swear that I just read that Dr. Curry (in Ohio) was appointed by Inamed to teach the other surgeons????? To date, does anyone know how many bands Dr.Aceves has placed himself? Have a great day!! Tricia
Guest guest
Tricia, The band was only approved in the US about 5 years ago.. Dr A. was doing the band before it was ever approved in the US. If you look on his website I believe that he has done well over 2000. I believe they have been doing the band in Mexico for 20 years or so. I go to Dr Curry for my fills but I had my band done in Mexico by Dr A. Dr Curry is a very nice and friendly Dr and if I had not have gotten my band done by Dr A. then I would have wanted Dr Curry to do it which I did not even know Dr Curry at the time but I could not afford to get it in the US and I don't have any regrets at all. I don't know about the teaching part but I do believe that Dr Aceves taught Dr's in the US to do the band after it was approved and maybe Dr Curry does teach also but I am sure they are not the only ones that teach doing the band. But there will be others on the board that can give you more info on this. Guest guest
Hi there Okay, you are just the person I need to be talking to then. Thank you so much for replying. Are you in Cincy? I live in Cols. Actually....it was Dr. Curry who said that he recommended that I not go to Mexico (I didn't want anyone to know which Dr. said it originally). But since he does your fills....thought I'd share. See, I HAD an appt. with Dr. Curry TOMORROW for a consult and cancelled for some other reasons. Does he still seem to be there 100% of the time for you even though he didn't do your surg? I just feel like it make tick him off that I was contemplating using him and then here switch to Dr. A. When was your surg? How much have you lost. THANKS A MILLION FOR REPLYING once again.....if you don't mind, I will save you address in case I run into other questions. Guest guest
Hi, question for ya...i just went to cheaptickets.com to price airfare to San Diego. is there still a van/shuttle available from Dr. A's office to pick us up at that airport??? If not, and depending on what month I need a fill(S), the tickets would be higher. Do you mind me asking what the total fee Dr. Curry charges? I would give anything to find a surg here in Cols. for the fills. Even though Cincy is ~2 hours away, if it were an emergency, that still seems too far to go. Guest guest
As far as I know, if you schedule and coordinate with the offices, you should be able to ride the same shuttle from the airport to Mexicali as the folks who are having their surgeries done, when you go for your fills. Dr. Curry charged me a one time charge for becoming a new patient and I can’t remember what it was, but I can remember that it didn’t really phase me so it must have been between $200 and $350. Since that time I pay $150 for each fill. I drive from Lexington, KY to his office which is about 1.5 hours for my fills. Of course I drive 1.25 hours to work every day at the Cincinnati Airport so it doesn’t phase me much. In fact, I went for my last fill over lunch from work. I’ve been reading this board for a while and have read stories where people had what they would consider band “emergencies” and even then, most of them had days to deal with it, so I doubt a matter of hours would be a killer. Guest guest
Yes, the shuttle is still available but your flight has to arrive usually no later than 11:00 am. Also if you click on the database it will help you locate a local surg, that is where I had help finding mineRick Sheets <triciasheets@...> wrote: Hi, question for ya...i just went to cheaptickets.com to price airfare to San Diego. is there still a van/shuttle available from Dr. A's office to pick us up at that airport??? Guest guest
Tricia.... Keep in mind that NO US doc wants any of us going to Mexico for surgery. They don't make a great deal off of fills, they make big money by banding people. Being a doc is a business like any other. If we go to Mexico they lost business. It's no different from Dillards Department stores wanting us to buy from Dillards vs. going to Macy's. The issue that I find the most amusing is that the docs screaming the loudest about not going to Mexico are the same docs that were trained by Mexican physicians. The more down and dirty a doc gets about not going to Mexico ... that usually means they aren't getting a lot of business and they resent patients opting for Mexico to have their surgery. I am well aware of Dr. Currie and I'll just say this, he'll see any person for any reason after they have surgery regardless of where they were banded. I would look and see who has the appropriate experience and credentials. Dr. Aceves has loads of experience and not only is he the VP of the Mexican bariatric assn, he is also the Secretary of the INTERNATIONAL bariatric assn. Point being, even the US docs voted him in that position so the US docs like Dr. Aceves as well. 252/169/150 Banded 12/06 On 7/22/07, Rick Sheets <triciasheets@...> wrote: Hi there Okay, you are just the person I need to be talking to then. Guest guest
Tricia: I will share with you what my Physician Assistant told me when I had a check-up in Tampa before I went to Mexico for my surgery. She said: 1) The Lapband is the exact procedure she is recommending and researching for her son-in-law, and 2) Good Medicine is practiced in places other than just the U.S. Do your research. But frankly, I spend 8 months doing mine and ended up wth Aceves. I have never been disappointed. I love the care and attention to my needs during my surgery, follow-up care, fills and email inquiries. His staff is so well trained, prompt and tremendously efficient like none other I have found here. Guest guest
Hi ! Yep, I think I'm (almost) in the same boat as you. About three years ago, I started researching gastric bypass, then decided lap band for a million reasons. I've switched Doctors now THREE times....and I think the third time (Dr. ACEves) is charm!! I just have to "nail down" a place to get (excellent) fills here in Cols! Thanks for your info, I appreciate more than you know!! On a personal note, my husband has one foot out the door, so I need to take care of myself and make myself happy, so I can take care of our three little ones. Pray for me please that things work out for me, I pray all of the time. Tricia let me TRY to attach my picture here...ugh, it didn't work, I'll try later! Guest guest
Tricia: I certainly do hope things work out well. I will tell you that I travel back to Dr. A. for fills. I can book a flight from Tampa to San Diego for about $245. The hospital cost for the flouro is about $75-80 +/- depending on the exchange rate. I have been back 2 x after surgery in 10 months. Given the prices quoted for some places here in the states, it is still a bargain for me to travel on a Saturday for a fill. Sometimes I have added a hotel night in to make the travel easier and it gives me some down time to enjoy the San Diego area. Given the difficulties some have experienced, I feel better going back for fills. It is a personal decision you have to make. Best wishes.
