Guest guest
Wellllllllll, I was implanted before the warnings came out, soooooooooo I never got mine either.. My mother has been implanted for 11-12 years and never got hers either. Personal choice, Personal choice.. The company reccomends it.. You either get it or you don't; If you don't get the vaccine and do come down with Mengitis, the comapny isn't responsible.. THAT'S what it's all about.. Guest guest
There were millions that didn't get effected by meningitis... Just a few unlucky one did. And few of them died. It may covered their butts which I don't blame them at all and save a very few life too. I think it worth it. Don't you? For those who had it before... there wasn't any history of it. Like any Medical procedures. It is not perfect. But we learn from them. Right? My last comments, I was just joking... Sorry for it being taking the wrong way. Guest guest
, You were clearly implying that the problem was limited to one brand, with one specific component, Your original note stated: " The implant thought to be at fault had a positioner in them and were pulled from the market and the positioner in those implants is no longer used " From these words, there is nothing that informs people that there were cases across all 3 CI brands, including people without a positioner, and suggests that there were no cases of meningitis with the other brands. Guest guest
I didn't get the shot either. Everytime I get a flu shot I get the flu so I didn't get one of those either. Guest guest
Greetin' ladie and Gents! I have papers for meningitis shot from my audie. My brother is going to set up an appointment for that. Thing is... is it too early to get that shot? I mean I don't even have a surgery date set yet, or it doesn't matter? Well you know, I can't believe it. The journey of CI began on May 13th for me, and it's only beginning! So I know that soon..the journey will get a little hard, right? Wow... I'm seeing a social worker (which I think it's for a psych interview) and getting a meningitis shot appt... still waiting for dr. kohan to call my brother to let us know if the health insurance has approve yet for my CT scan. Wow.. things are getting started! Kind of scary and yeah, anxious!!!!!! di (;

Guest guest
Good question ! I'm not even sure on that one.. The best thing to do would be to call the dr who will be giving the shot and ask how soon you should get the shot. I'm not positive if this is a life time protection for Meningitis or not, but those who have had the shot I think only have to get just the one shot. Please let us know what you find out on this. Yep.. I think most of us went through the scary, excited, and anxious stage prior to getting our ci, but as someone who has been trhough it, I can only say.. It's the best decision I ever made, and after the fact, there was no basis for being scared or anxious. I know.. easy to say once you've been through it..LOL Hang in there..These feelings are all perfectly normal. Guest guest
Stan, Once you get your CI, you're going to be amazed -- believe me!! Best of luck to you on your surgery!! In the meantime, I'll continue to write more about my experiences. I felt the same way you did after reading posts on the list about what people could hear. When I learned that people could hear sounds like birds singing and keys jingling, I was completely blown away. And to think I told my audi that I'd be happy to have a 20 dB gain in hearing if nothing else. LOL! Guest guest
Stan, It's the adage " an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. " Go for it. I got mine before my CI surgery. While the odds are very, very remote, you might want to consider FDA's warning about getting the vaccine for CI surgery -- one could have severe complications such as death, brain damage, etc. if one wasn't vaccinated against meningitis. Hospitals are notorious places for catching nosocomial infections, not limited to just meningitis! activated 12/8 On Fri, 21 Jan 2005 20:04:55 -0000, runwritebike <scstraub@...> wrote: > > > Hi All, > > I asked the surgery center where I am scheduled to get my CI if I > should get a meningitis shot prior to the surgery. Guest guest
, Thanks for your reply regarding the meningitis shot and for the words of encouragement. I plan on going into the CI surgery/activation with low expectations. I'm like you were saying, " any improvement is better than what I have now. " However, if I get blown away with the hearing of birds, people, turn signals (which I haven't heard in a long time), toilets flushing (LOL), I'll be really, really happy. I can hardly wait to read more of your CI adventure as it unfolds. Your words are getting me really excited. I may have to try to speed up the calendar a little. Guest guest
Thanks, , jefferson is a fine hospital. My parents took me there from NJ when I was first diagnosed with hearing loss as a kid. My friend had her implant done at Temple. I guess all of the hospital programs have their own criteria for the shot. Continued success with your implant. <smiles> Jackie
