Guest guest
---Hello , I guess you don't know me but I just want to tell you about the vaccine. My doctor don't recommended to get vaccine before the surgery, because it brings more complications. So I had pneumonia shot after the surgery which was about three weeks later. Maybe you can ask your doctor to be sure. Good luck with your surgery and get a plenty of rest after. Guest guest
, I had the shot (it's actually the pneumonia vaccine that is routinely recommended for the elderly) shortly before my surgery. My center supposedly requires it, but they never asked me about it again after my initial visit to them. Like you, I wasn't all that concerned, but just got it for peace of mind. I don't think you are too late to get one. Fisk Atlanta, GA CII 4/25/03, hook-up 5/27/03, HiRes 6/25/
Guest guest
, My ear surgeon makes it mandatory for all the people he implants. My PCP said it takes 3 weeks to become fully effective. Most PCP's and hospitals do not stock it because it has a short shelf life. Health Departments near major universities supply it because new students entering college require it for admissions. Thanks for the wishes. My surgery was a breeze and I hope yours will be also. > Hi everyone . . . maybe I am a little late asking this, as my surgery > is next Tuesday (the 12th), but is there enough time to still get the > shot if I wanted to? Guest guest
The vaccine for college students is NOT the same one recommended fo CI patients. College students get a meningitis shot, I forgot what it is called.. Adult CI patients get the Pneumovax, which works against pneumoccocal meningitis and is the vaccine routinely given to seniors. I would think most PCP's stock it (mine does) but apparently some do not. The pediatric recommendation is different. Steinerman
Guest guest
when i received the letter (long ago it seems) about the relationship between CI and meningitis i really didn't take it to heart so i never followed up on getting a meningitis shot i have had my CI for over a year now ..... and doing great i might add so my question is this ... on a scale of 1 - 10 how important is it to get this shot? am i the only one who didn't follow up on the CI warning? what do those in the know recommend? susan N24 7/

Guest guest
Dave, There is no absolute proof that the meningitis was due to the implants, in fact, the incidence of meningitis among ci users is no greater than that among the general population percentage wise. The implant thought to be at fault had a positioner in them and were pulled from the market and the positioner in those implants is no longer used, however, it just makes sense to take whatever precautions you can prior to surgery and those advised to have the vaccination should. Also, there are a number of people right here on these forums who had meningitis way before their implants and in fact, lost their hearing due to the meningitis. For me, the risk was minimal compared to the chance to get my hearing back, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I had to In , " Dave Pearson " <dkl.pearson@v...> wrote: > Some people died from meningitis after the CI implant. >
Guest guest
, All 3 CI brands had cases of meningitis. There were also people without the positioner who got it. This is quite a misleading post. Guest guest
I didn't hear about that. I just know that several people died from the Meningitis and all of them had recently had their CI surgery. I think the percentage was about .07 (point 07% not 7%) that had the CI surgery and had Meningitis. Pearson sville, WA I can hear as well with my hearing aids as a person with a walker can jog. Guest guest
As I understand it from doing research peeople with out the spoken postitioner still got meningitis. cases varied from brands to. All factors should be considering when looking at Ci brands after all its your body and life. as a jouranlist I suggest always do your home work and check facts. > >> Some people died from meningitis after the CI implant. > >> > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
I have to agree with on that one. My audi told me today at hook up who's fault it was and my doctor told me in so many words during evaluation the same thing. > >> Some people died from meningitis after the CI implant. > >> > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
, This is a question of facts, not " fault. " Are you really saying that only CI users with the positioner came down with meningitis? That's not the case. At 9:08 PM -0400 8/5/03, morningsun61 wrote: >I have to agree with on that one. Guest guest
If everyone will read the statement made by the Center for Disease Control which I sent earlier - you will see that all the information is clearly written. The article does state that the incidence of meningitis is seen more often in young children but recommends that all CI recipients (no matter what brand or model) have the pneumonia shot as a precautionary measure. Guest guest
Alice, " all CI recipients (no matter what brand or model) " Those are the key words for me right there. It should not be viewed as a brand issue. It unfortunately happened to people with all brands. Guest guest
Nope just telling you what my doctor and audi told me. I have no idea. But I am only speaking about the cases pretaining to cochlear implants because they are the only ones I am concerned about.I got the shot because my doctor MAKES us get it. So you've misunderstood my post. > >> >> Some people died from meningitis after the CI implant. > >> >> > >> > > >> > > >> > > >> > > >> >

Guest guest
There is no " fault " anywhere and I didn't mislead anyone, merely going by the last update I had concerning the miningitis vaccines; however, I have read the newest update now. I never said any implant was at fault ; you need to go back and reread it.. I said there was no proof that the implant was at fault.. This is not misleading. That's all I have to say on the subject for now and will move onto other things. For the record Folks, NO ONE IMPLANT IS AT FAULT! There isn't any fault, just the need for people to be aware of the possibility that it can happen and to be protected if your physician or surgeon so suggests. Anyone can get meningitis.. implanted or not; that's my story and I'm sticking with it..LOL Hugs, Silly
Guest guest
, A lot of doctors are not personally recommending the shots. My belief is that the main reason people are told in writing that a shot is recommended, is to protect against liability, for the rare case that may show up. As with yourself, I did not get the shot.
