My advice...

Call your Surgeon-Dr. Rutledge immediately!!!! You don't want to waste time

writing to the board - this is what I would consider a medical emergency - and I

did it once, I'd be on the phone and on my way to the nearest dr. or E.R.

Please take care of yourself and talk to - Dr. Rutledge (Private cell phone)

702-953-7066 or 702-215-9550 - ASAP!! Best of luck !!!

A very concerned Michele in GA please update us when you are up to it!

Hi,

I have had several episodes of what I believe to be extremely low blood

sugar- just wondering if anyone else has had this. I am not sure what brings

it on- but when I am awake- my mind goes numb, I have intense sweating, I am

almost incoherent- usually needing assistance to walk- then I become

extremely tired and fall into a deep sleep. Sweat literally drips from then

ends of my hair- and have tried drinking pepsi- eating something sugary- but

it doesn't really seem to help. Usually I wake up about 3-4 hours later and

I am back to normal. It is pretty scary. I have looked up low blood sugar on

the internet and these are considered moderate symptoms. What I read says

that if your stomach empties too rapidly you can have this problem. I am

wondering if this is common for gastric bypass patients.

Thank you for your concern. This situation has only happened a few times-

separated by months. So I don't feel it is a medical emergency unless it is

happening frequently or right now. I do plan on speaking to my regular

doctor about it- and I sent Dr R an email- but I haven't heard anything.

Thanks again

It is always best to call Dr. Rutledge. Can you imagine how many e-mails he

gets in one day and how easy it is for them to get lost. Call him if your

having real problems.

Hi ,

I have developed the same problem of, what feels like, hypoglycemic

" episodes " since my MGB; never really had it before the surgery unless I

ingested

insane amounts of sugary foods (but even at 253 lbs, was not my main caloric

intake problem - I just liked to eat a LOT).

I have never been diabetic nor hypoglycemic before. According to medical

definition, I'm still neither of these 2 things. But as of the last 2 or so

years, I sometimes space out, can't carry conversations, go into " auto pilot

mode " of basic instincts in order to avoid getting hurt, etc etc. Just a few

weeks ago I drove right by the interstate exit to my house, like it was

nothing.

I went into auto-pilot mode and wound up " waking up " on a back road to my

house some 10 minutes later. Don't remember how I got there...I just got there.

I haven't lived in this town but for 6 months, so I thought maybe I just

displaced myself on the highway, but when I " woke up " on the back road, it took

me a minute to recognise where I was. I hadn't felt that frightened in a

longggggggg time.

I have been tested over and over and over again and there is not one stitch

of medical evidence that my body is going through any physiological changes so

all of my Docs are baffled, and quite frankly, not seemingly too concerned!

There is no rhyme or reason when these episodes happen.

There is only one thing that remains a constant if I let it - (and I dislike

this because my Hubby and I only get 1 day a week to enjoy mornings

together) - a proper Sunday breakfast - a, as in one singular, cup of coffee

(yes, a

cardinal MGB no-no), a serving of fruit or 2-4 oz yogurt, an egg, 1 slice

bacon, 1 slice low carb toast w/tsp peanut butter or some simply fruit spread -

DOES NOT, and I mean DOES NOT stay with me. I am guaranteed a mental-stupid

episode within 1 hr of eating. I'm better off eating just a Tb of peanut

butter, period. Go figure.

In any event, I hope they figure out what is causing your ailments. In the

meantime, I keep plugging on, just hoping that I make it through whenever it

happens.

BTW, you may wish to keep a snack in your purse and car at all times

(haven't kept up with your posts, sorry if you already made mention of this). It

has

bailed me out plenty of times in 1-2 hr traffic jams going up I-85!

I'd like to know what Dr. R says. I had a couple of episodes like this a few

months ago, in the middle of the night. I honestly thought I was going to

die...it scared my husband to death. It was like I was on the very verge of

passing out but it lasted for a few minutes....it kept stroking my forehead

telling me it would be ok. After the episode was over, I waited a few minutes,

go up to go to the bathroom and BAM...it hit again. VERY VERY scary.

Thank you to everyone for you insights. The weird thing is that I do eat

regularly, for the most part- I am trying to see if there might be a

pattern. Another weird thing is that the episodes usually occurs 1-2 hours

after I eat. When I looked up the info for low blood sugar on google- there

was one site that did say episodes could be brought on by rapid emptying of

the stomach- I am wondering if that is what it is.

I have had a few epidsodes with the shakiness and dizziness that is cured by

eating. But this is much different. I really feel that my mind has gone

numb, the sweating is so severe that it is dripping off the ends of my hair,

I am unable to function- carry on a conversation, walk steadily, I actually

need assistance. The last time this happened I was on vacation- my husband

helped me back to our room and I drank pepsi and had a piece of fudge- I

felt a little better- but extremely tired- I then fell into a deep sleep-

and didn't move an inch for about 3-4 hours before I woke up and then I was

fine.

The other times it has happened I have been at home and I have just gone to

sleep. I am going to check with my regular doctor and watch what I eat to

see if there is a pattern. Again this has happened about 4-5 times over the

past year so it is unpredictable. I now carry glucose tablets in my purse to

see if that will help. I haven't tried eating protein when it happens but

that is because I have been alone and really out of it- to know what to do

other than sleep. For the very mild symptoms of shakiness and weakness- I do

eat cheese and crackers or peanut butter and crackers and I feel better. But

again this is very different and I usually do eat every 2-4 hours.

Thanks again,

Just wondering if either of you have had your nutrition levels checks. I

have another friend (postMGB 6 years) who has had some serious cognitive

problems that I believe were related to B vitamins. Her levels were NORMAL,

but low. Once she got them back to much higher ranges, it went away. She

was being given the name of a person on her cell phone while driving and she

couldn't repeat the name back to the person correctly. Pretty scary. Just

a thought;, although I have to admit what you describe sounds much more like

blood sugar issues to me, too. I am CERTAIN, from my own experiences, that

our nutritional levels need to be better, higher than just within the normal

range. Just remember that our family doctors frequently don't really

understand all the issues that go with WLS patients...we have to learn from

each other, do our own research, and push doctors to consider things they

might not otherwise consider.

Right now, I am on a MISSION to figure out the source of my edema. I know

that it can be the result of a weak heart muscle...pretty scary since we can

lose muscle mass while losing weight and our hearts are muscles. I know

kidney disease can impact it at as well.. I have had a complete work up and

that is not the issue....And then their is protein that can impact water

retention. I am still working on getting my protein level higher than just

in the range...right now I am 3.4 with 3.5 being the bottom of the range.

Once I get that higher, I want SOMEONE to help be figure out how to NOT need

to take lasix. I am 50 and don't want to take them for the rest of my life

but am miserable without them. My concern is that part of it is the salt we

need. I hope not, because that would be hard to fix. I think that exercise

may improve the circulation and help as well. As soon as I can add that back

into my life...that will be my next step.

Anyway, I ramble. Good luck with figuring this out but DON'T stop...get

SOMEONE to figure this out for you.

Dear ,

Please keep us posted. I am particularly interested to see if your docs

figure it out. Outside of the deep, hours-long sleeping and severe shaking, our

symptoms sound identical but I have not made the connection (apparently

neither have my docs) about the rapid tummy emptying! We might all learn

something

very valuable here.

Good luck, Gal. I can definitely relate to the " pains " of it all; it's never

any fun to drench yourself in sweat or (temporarily, but literally) lose

your mind.

BTW, are you near menopausal age? My gyno keeps telling me I " might " be

starting menopause - hummmmmmm. Have you had any plastic surgery? I wonder if

that could be a factor too? Heck, I'm no wiser now than I was 5 minutes ago

before typing this email.

I had my MGB almost two years ago. Before I lost 140 pounds my sugar ran in the

3 and 4 hundreds. I was taking 5 insulin shots a day had a yeast infection for 4

months straight (no kidding). From the day of my surgery I have been off all

meds and insulin. My sugar runs around 100 to 120. I do get low sugars

sometimes. It has been as low as 17. I have the same symptoms as you. It drains

me and I sleep for hours. It makes me act like a looney. Once I was outside in

my gown looking for squirrels, and another time I was talking to the statue of

Mc in Wal-Mart. I know I must look drunk but I don't drink. I carry

glucose tablets with me. They cost a dollar or two and help. The only problem is

sometimes it comes on so fast I don't realize its low until its really low. I

still have to watch my sugar intake since my body is over producing insulin now

when I eat to much sugar or too many carbs. Be careful what you eat and make

sure eat frequently. This doesn't happen

often with me either maybe once every two or three months. Jill Lakeland,

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I have had plastic surgery- breast lift with

augmentation- in Feb. but these episodes started before that and seem to be

completely unrelated to that surgery. I am almost 47 years old- but I don't

think I am anywhere near menopausal- due to the fact that my period is like

clock work - every 28 days and I am not on the pill. I do believe it could

be rapid emptying of the stomach- in addition to whatever else I eat.

Because I can eat the same thing and not have the same effect. I did have a

typical low blood sugar episode the other day when I went too long without

eating- queasy and dizzy- and then I had something to eat and was better in

a few minutes- these other episodes are much worse. I haven't made it to my

doc yet but I will hopefully in the next week.

wow thanks for your info. Do you get really sweaty with this?- surprisingly

it is mainly my face that sweats- not really the rest of my body. It does

come on suddenly and sometimes you don't realize you even know it is

happening until you are in the middle of it. Glad to know someone else has

experienced it.

Good question- I reviewed the symptoms of dumping, I don't have nausea,

diarrhea or dizziness- during these episodes- so I don't think that is it.
