Gayle,

I read that teaching your dog hand or signed commands can strengthen the

relationship between you and them. Dogs are visual (i.e. they look at your

face before responding to what they hear), so using sign or other hand

commands helps reinforces this and allows the dog to focus more on you

instead of auditory stimuli that can distract them.

Gayle,

It's amazing how smart dogs really are. They say guide dogs (not sure if

this is also true of hearing and other service dogs) have a vocabulary equal

to that of a 7 year old child.

When Tigger needs to go outside, she gives me her paw. The bathroom sign is

something I'm going to try with my next guide dog. I think it will be

especially helpful when I'm in public and don't want the whole world to know

he/she needs to take care of business. <grin>

lisa, good idea1! Arnold doesn't as of yet have a good way of telling me

accept when i find it in the middle of the night! This hasn't happened often

though and i've discovered that if he gets to walk enough during the day to

get things going, thayt we don't have problems and i also discovered they

were on my days off when i wasn't as likely always to go somewhere/.

good to know and he's just been back on tie down at night again for the last

couple months. he sleeps with me so since he's been of it the last few

nights, we haven't had problems.
