Guest guest
Hi: I read your posting about wanting your Mom to make an appointment for you there in Colorado for an evaluation for a CI? That must mean your still a minor? Is that right? How old are you? Now to answer your question, no one can interfere with your Mother's rights and her final choice, but what I can do here is let your Mother know a little about it and why I did it for me. I realize whenever we cut into the human head there are risks we may not want for our loved ones. That also includes one's self. However, it is under the skin and not near the brain at all. Therefore, there is little chance of anything going wrong for your child. Also, the CI is by both Federal Law & the FDA mandated not to be offered to any candidate who may either retain his/her hearing with in a 3 year period of time, or someone who may benefit from unusually strong hearing aids not on the general market. Hearing aids only amplify your natural hearing. Therefore, if you can build a future with high powered special hearing aids? That is of course the way to go with your child. However, if your child is really deaf and there is no hope of that deafness resending it's self ever. Then the CI offers your loved one the world of sound again. No one can ever tell you how much your loved one will gain or not gain from the surgery. Each of us are different, each of us respond differently. Each of us choose different companies who also play a roll in how it all comes out. For example, I went with Nucleus Cochlear Implant Company, because they did a lot of firsts through out the world. They have been on the for front of many wonderful inventions and their implant is titanium coated. I liked that idea far better then plastic or meddle in my head. I really do believe you need to spend some time with your loved one looking into all 3 companies, talk to your CI clinic, research as much as you can before turning away from this once in a million chance of hearing again. It would offer your loved one the right to once again participate in life as it was meant to be lived to it's fullest. Even music is a big one I read all the time how CI people love to hear music. The laws regarding the devices are very strict and believe me, I understand them well, because my Father sat on the Superior Bench for 36 years and my Brother currently is practicing Law and I'm a pare legal. I do believe we know what we are reading when we read the law. The Cochlear Implant is under very strict & stringent laws through out this wonderful nation of ours. For anyone under the age of 18 they are also required to set up and excite classes for both speech pronouncement & speech it's self to be learned properly with the CI once it is turned on for the candidate. I'm a 55 year old Mom & Grandma. I am also legally blind. For me, the choice was simple, either get the CI or live in both darkness & silence the rest of my life. I opted for the better choice. To hear again even if it is just the CI doing the hearing for me. I had my surgery this last week. Now I look forward to hock up date on September 5, 2003, at 8:00 " AM and believe me, I'll be very on time for that one. You might want to read all the web sites, because that is what I did. I spent 3 months doing nothing but CI research over and over again until Web sits were sick to death of hearing from me. I hope this assists you and your family in it's harder then hard choice facing you? Remember, there is always a new way around things. They don't cut your skull, they don't cut anything like that. They don't cut the ear either. You will learn all of that when you decide to sit down yourself and look into it. Your child is very brave to go on line and ask for help in helping you to realize what your loved one is asking you to decide on. I wish you all the very best and may the Good Lord above show you two the right path for you! Please feel free to write me any time. Thank you: Felicity:
