I heard someone mention a trust fund of some sort that could take a person's monthly income down enough to qualify for Medicaid and ssi. Not necessary, how it worked,, if your income is too much by let say 50 dollars a month, the spend down allows you to pay the first 50 dollars minus what allowance allowed as " deductible " then the Medicaid kicks in. When I was on it, my spend down was about 20 dollars a month, I had an option to ask for 1, 3, or 6 months. I picked the 3 month because the 60 dollars were easily written off in one office visit and I never paid a dime. Once they see a bill that is more than 60 dollars, that it,,,,,,, no more spend down until next time I apply. All it requires, get the bill, show it to welfare office and they make you a medical coupon, voucher, or whatever it calls in your state. Of course, I have " heard " there is cut-off point to qualify, but this program is REALLY good for those who are just " over the limit " . I don't know anything about " trust fund " for SSI.... but as I said earlier, I was able to get Medicaid without SSI in the past using the " spend down " method. Guest guest
Thanks Robin! And your local SS office is helpful in explaining this process? I just need to know the right people to go to in order to find out. Guest guest
Hi Pam, A Medicaid " Spend Down " amount as they call it means 2 things. 1. Your total monthly earning (from Employment or other benefits) fall over the approved income limits of the State Low Income Welfare Medicaid Plan. 2. If that applies, but your earned income minus cost of living expenses and all paid or unpaid medical costs that you have paid in past 6 months up to present puts you in a different level of low income bracket but with a monthly spend down amount that you pay out of pocket for your medical bills and services. Then after, lets say your monthly spend down amount is told to be is $400.00 a month. Then you can show and provide to them that you already paid over $400.00 this month in medical bills and services. You paid $500.00, That is the when the state will pay for you. Any amounts over that monthly amount will be picked up and paid as qualified by Medicaid. If you do not have that amount monthly but 3 months later you had big medical expense you would then have to show it being over being over $1200.00 for that month for them to pay out for that month of expenses. $400 x 3 months +$1200.00 meaning did not pay any medical bills or that added up over $400.00.
