Hi Ben,

Yes, as far as I'm aware, Provacol is a Statin too. Apparently, it has less

side effects. My Dad never tried the Lipitor, after the research that he read.

So far, no major problems w/ the Provacol though.

Hi Everyone, I have been trying for the last 6 months to find a drug to help

lower my cholesterol. I have tried, Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor,

Novastatin,Provachal. They have all caused me major pain and weakness. Even

on the lowest

dosages. I have taken a break from trying anymore. I am tired of feeling sick

and in more pain. I have told the lipid specialist about my CMT and he said

there are so many drugs out there to keep trying. He just doesn't seem to get

it that statins hurt me. I am seeing a new doctor this week in hopes she will

listen to me. My cholesterol is severe. It's hereditary. I would love to

hear from anyone who has succeeded on a drug to help cholesterol. I watch my

diet and exercise when CMT allows me too.

Thanks,

Carol

Hi everyone, statins can cause your muscle enzymes to go out of out of wack.

Once this happens you get weaker and lose more muscle, not good for us. Please

have your doctor keep am eye on you blood for enzymes. I started lipitor and

like all statins it negitivly effected my enzymes. I tried taking q10 but it did

not help at all. Once off them everything went back to normal. I have changed

my diet now and it is helping somewhat. My specialist told about a new drug

that is not a statin but a fibrate. Please keep an eye on your enzymes, I

cannot stress this enough. Last time I went to my nero for this he stated that

he had a patient or had knowledge of a patient (with cmt) that had been on

lipitor and it cause him to become so weak that it is going to be very hard for

him to recover. This is the same doctor that a year before stated that taking

lipitor was OK. Please be careful. Remember you know your body best and if

something does not feel right then you are always the best " doctor " .

Thanks to those who posted about statins. My DH is on one and he has been loosing his memory, getting hand tremors and drooling. I read him the post and he is so relieved. He thought he was just falling apart. I printed it out to give to his dr and he is going to stop taking them. Little by little I have gotten him on fresh veggies and fruit, better all around diet. When I met him, he did not recognize salad as food! Now he craves them, thank goodness!!!

Our DIL was over today and he was telling her about the statins. Her father is also on statins.....the list goes on! This is a lifesaver!

Hi Carl,

Yes, we have known for quite a while that Statin medications used in

lowering cholesterol may cause problems for persons with CMT. You may

be interested in the Statins article in our Files about Statins and

Neuromuscular Disease. You may also use the archives to find past posts

regarding this subject.

Perhaps you can lower your cholesterol through dietary changes and/or

exercise.

Ruth,

I don't take them, or need to, but know that " statins " like Lipitor,

Crestor, Zocor and others can cause more muscle fatigue and weakness

in persons with CMT. I think there's a 2007 alert on this in our

Files. You might also want to check the Archives for past posts on this topic.

Also FYI: from http://www.medicinenet.com/statins/page2.htm

What are the side effects of statins?

Statins have few important side effects. The most common side

effects are headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea,

headache, rash, weakness, and muscle pain. The most serious (but

fortunately rare) side effects are liver failure and rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis is a serious side effect in which there is damage to

muscles. Rhabdomyolysis often begins as muscle pain and can progress

to loss of muscle cells, kidney failure, and death. It occurs more

often when statins are used in combination with other drugs that

themselves cause rhabdomyolysis or with drugs that prevent the

elimination of statins and raise the levels of statins in the blood.

Since rhabdomyolysis may be fatal, unexplained joint or muscle pain

that occurs while taking statins should be brought to the attention

of a healthcare provider for evaluation.

Ruth,

I have a very successful history with taking statins to reduce

cholesterol, although that was prior to my CMT diagnosis. At the time of my CMT

diagnosis, my cholesterol was the least of my worries and I stopped taking

anything to control it.

Now my doctor wants me to start taking them again, though this time in

combination with Co-Enzyme Q-10. I told him I'd give it a try.

The statin I take is a natural supplement called Red Rice Yeast Extract,

sometimes also called Red Yeast Extract. I purchase it at the health food

stores. I also take an omega 3 fish oil supplement. In the past that combination

did an excellent job of bringing my cholesterol down into an acceptable range.

Kay,

Some Doctor's are nuts. They just don't understand that we might know what is

best for us. I did the same thing with my Doctor. She looked at me like I was

nuts but I was not taking them any longer. It was as simple as that.

I too had much pain from taking Lipitor. I had to stop it was casuing me to

much pain.

Thanks
