Hi Carol

You can email my husband Stevebelcher@.... He had the surgery

November 7th 2003 and only had a 3ft bypass. He has lost almost 50lbs.

He would be glad to share his story.

I had an MGB by Dr. Zinni in Las Vegas and was told by Dr. Rutledge when I

had a revision that Zinni only bypassed 3 ft. I only lost 50 pounds and

stopped losing, so I had a revision in October with Dr. Rutledge and he

bypassed 6 more feet and I have already lost 53 more pounds. Why do you ask

about the 3 feet?

Does anyone know why Dr. R. bypasses 6 ft of intestine, when there are some

spectacular successes, like the one below, with only 1 1/2 - 3 ft bypassed? Just

curious.

IF a person needs to lose less weight or if they have complications with

their liver, doctor will bypass less bowel.

There can be different reasons. Sometimes Dr. R makes that decision

when he sees the condition of other organs and feels it is safer.

Sometimes it is for people who don't need to lose as much. Dr. R now

does a modified MGB for people who need to lose 50 pounds or so.

Sometimes there are medical problems or age can be a factor in deciding that

3 foot vs 6 foot would be sufficient. You may also have some one that is

overweight but not severely obese....someone that might be 200 pounds and

5'4 " who might would only need a 3 footer vs a 6 footer.

From what I understand, his preference is to bypass 6 feet because of better

results. If someone already has fatty liver or other risk factors, he only

bypasses 3 feet.

Doris,

I sure wouldn't worry about it, but I'm one if I lost to much, it wouldn't

bother me any. I don't think I'll ever be too skinny. I don't know what the

deal could be with your report saying 10 ft was bypassed though. I'd contact

his office and make sure that's correct.

Doris,

I just checked your chart and Dr. Rutledge only bypasses 6 feet. Hope

this relieves you of your stress.

Are you sure? Looks like he would have told you before or right after

surgery if he didn't bypass the 6 ft. I'd check for certain before you get

too disappointed.

O'kay, I am new to this e-mail group. I have been sitting quietly by

reading on this one like I did the one before surgery. I have a question, I

thought that he always bypassed 6 feet of intestine. I am assuming from

your posting that you had not been told that you did not have 6 bypassed,

only 4 ft?

Was there a reason for only doing 4 instead of the 6 told about in the

manual, or is it just up to him? I now wonder about myself. How can I find

out if I had 6 or a smaller number?

This concerns me. Did he not tell you the next day after surgery or your

family the day of?

I hope that I am not making a mountian out of a mole hill, but I just needed

to know.

Thanks,

Sheffield

Thanks, , I think I will contact the office and ask if that's correct.

I'm not worried about losing too much weight -- are any of us? -- just

thought it was strange that my report said ten feet when everyone else talks

about six feet.

Hi .

If you ask the office, I'm sure they will tell you.

I talked to Dr. R the day after my surgery and he told me that he bypassed 7

feet on me because I was quite large. I'm glad he did and I have been

feeling great.

Best wishes.

,

The standard bypass that we do is 6 feet. At times it may be

necessary for a person to have a shorter bypass. If a persons liver is

fatty it sometimes is necessary to bypass a shorter amount so as not to

harm a patients health. Also there are some patients that don't weigh a

full 100 pounds overweight, but may have diabetes or high blood

pressure, in this case a shorter bypass may be called for. Each patient

is taken as an individual.

Once surgery is complete Dr. Rutledge generally talks with the family

and explains how the surgery went, patients are told if they get a

shorter bypass than they expected to get.

I hope this clears this up for you.
