Alice, that sounds encouraging to me. Thanks

Re: Phonak MicroLink

Les,

I don't believe you will need the microlink in stores or

restaurants. It can't hurt to use one if you are comfortable with

it but hearing with a CI and hearing with a hearing aid are two

different worlds.

Les,

I should also mention that the telecoil in the CI is nothing like what you have

with the hearing aid. My telecoil lets me to hear in any building with a loop

system and also works with many FM Systems. For the most part, the CI

equipment is so advanced that there is little need to ever switch to it but it

is there if you need it. It's a direct connection.

Until you have the CI.. it will be hard to understand the difference between a

hearing aid and a cochlear implant but there is so much more you can hear and do

because of the technology of the implant. After a while, we almost take it for

granted, forgetting they are even there. It really is a miracle.

I wish you the very best. What a wonderful opportunity you have to regain some

quality of life. I'm thrilled for you.

I've been thinking of looking into an FM system. My only experience

with one was at the SHHH convention last summer. I used it with my HA

in the unimplanted ear (I had just been implanted and couldn't

understand a thing with the CI yet). I was amazed at how well I was

able to hear with it, and sorry I hadn't tried one out long ago.

I still cannot understand without lipreading, and think an FM might help

with that, especially in noise. My concern is that if I get an FM, will

I become dependent on it and never learn to understand with just the CI?

Am I " taking the easy way out " , and hurting myself in the long term?

I'd be interested in hearing others opinions/thoughts on this.

Thanks for any input,

Re: Phonak MicroLink

Les,

Everyone is differnt so it's really hard to predict how you will do

in these situations but in all probability, because today's implants

work so well in multiple situations without the need for assistive

devices, I don't believe you will need the microlink in stores or

restaurants. It can't hurt to use one if you are comfortable with

it but hearing with a CI and hearing with a hearing aid are two

different worlds.

,

First and foremost...whatever it takes to hear...do it. That is the goal and

there is no reason to deprive yourself of that if there is a way to make it

easier. You are not under pressure to go it alone.

Think of first. Who cares what makes it easier for you? The bottom line

is hearing.

  • 3 years later...

I also was unable to find out the price. Phonak does not give out prices

and does not sell them directly.

My audie said about $1000 plus additional for the microphone(s). She was

very vague and did not have one to try.

I think most users have them covered by schools or possibly vocational

services or employers.
