Post-ops,

I read daily messages about gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation. I am

almost 4 years out and still experience many of these intermittently. I have

posted on this topic before but it never seems to spark any discussion.

About 2 years ago, I was sick constantly. I was eating foods that normally

hadn't given me trouble and was getting this insane stomach bloating that

would last for hours until eventually it would produce the most horrible gas

imaginable. When the bloating would occur, my stomach would be so distended

and painful that I literally couldn't walk. I tried eliminating all sorts

of things from my diet. Couldn't figure out if it was milk, or wheat, or

sugar, or fruit. I was so depressed because I felt like I never knew what

would trigger that response.

Well, my rock band went on tour in Europe and suddenly I found I was not ill

at all. I racked my brain and thought, " what the heck is in all the food in

america that is not over here. "

Its corn syrup. I wasn't sensitive to it before but its in EVERYTHING

prepared in this country. Store-bought breads, soups, cereals, salad

dressings, pasta sauce, crackers, candies, cookies, sodas, pastries, frozen

dinners. Anything sweetish has the potential to have corn syrup, high

fructose corn syrup, and corn syrup solids. I did some experiments when I

got home and I was totally right. I can't eat ANYTHING with corn syrup. I

read every label now. I shop in health food stores. I make a lot of my own

food. I know which products don't have it. I still get some gas but NOTHING

like I used to.

Think about it.

That's a really good point ! (You have a rock band?)

When I tried Atkins last year I started looking more closely at

ingredient lists and, of course, carbs. Corn syrup is even in most

deli meats and a more extensive list of other foods than you can

imagine! It seems as though the corn producers and food

manufacturers found another market and another way to drive and feed

our carb cravings. It's small wonder obesity is a North American

epidemic and sadly most people don't know what they are eating.

Best,

Teri
