Foreign Travel & the MGB

I am going to Mexico in November, and wanted to know if there are any

special precautions I should take regarding my MGB. I've been to

this particular area 15 times, and have gotten a pretty nasty case of

dysentary two of those times. I can imagine it could cause a serious

problem if I get that again now. Is there a preventive antibiotic?

I'm sure we have post ops traveling all over the place. Any feedback

from the CLOS staff or our pharmacists that read the board?

Karrie,

I had my MGB on 3/2/04. I went to Cancun at the end of July this year and

had no problems. My doctor told me to, of course, be careful with the water, so

I only drank bottled water. He also told me to be careful of ice and salads,

but I did eat some salad while there and had no problems. In some of the

restaurants they had lemonade that you could have made with tap water, bottled

water, or soda water. I had that a couple of times made with bottled water.

Also, we went to Wal-Mart and got a big gallon of bottled water. I took my

own travel cup with a straw and took a couple of packets of sugar-free Kool-Aid

with me and made my own Kool-Aid while at the resort and laying out at the

beach or at the pool. That was great, too.

Overall, it was a great trip and I had no problems.

Karrie - Let me know if you don't hear from Dr. Rutledge and I will ask him. I

have not heard of anyone taking anything prior to their trip, but I will check

it out.

Thanks,

Kim Hazen

Kerrie,

Be careful not to drink the water or use their ice. Drink bottled water or

Gatorade or bottled juices. Also stay away from the fresh fruits and

vegetables. Especially stay away from the melons. There is a bacteria in the

rind and when it is cut, the blade of the knife spreads it into the meat of the

melon. Have fun.
