Guest guest
Your eating sounds fine? Protein (meat and such)fill you up quick. This is a reprint but I lose faster when I stick to this menu: Breakfast: 1/2 glass of V8 with Citracel, and all my vitamins and meds for the day. (Thyroid and Potassium as well as MGB meds) Snack 1 saltine with 1 small cube of cheddar cheese Lunch: 1/4 cup tuna salad or chicken salad with 1 saltine Snack : 4 almonds Dinner: 6 bites of grilled chicken breast and 1/4 cup green salad Dessert: 2 fresh strawberries dipped in sourcream/brown sugar or 5 frozen grapes Night snack: 1/2 glass of V8 with Citracel I drink 3 to 4 bottles of water 1 quart each throughout the day. That is it, doesnt sound like a whole lot but, I am NEVER hungry so it seems like I am stuffed all the time. I am so grateful for finding the MGB with Dr. Rutledge! Thank you Dr.'s! Guest guest
anne just remember to eat protein first and you are right.... SLOW DOWN!! think about the cottage cheese.... it is going to " slip " through that pouch and settle SO much easier than a protein like chicken tuna fish steak etc. you may want to stick to more " hearty " proteins for the most part, but like you, i love cottage cheese! just be careful because it goes down easy and fast..... good luck!!oxoxoxoxo cathy s in va > I had my surgery June 10. Guest guest
Hi Anne, I find that I can eat a lot of certain things and very little of others as well. I can eat a good amount of salad, 2 COBBS OF CORN!, mashed potatoes, canned corned beef hash, sheppards pie, but when it comes to meat like hamburgers, chicken, pork, or any bread item, pasta, I cannot eat much at all, it's not that I feel full, but my stomach does not feel right. Believe me, if you eat too fast you will know, the excess food will catch up with you. I did that once with mac and cheese and felt sick for about 2 hours! If you think that you are eating too fast you may be though, try chewing longer, I still have a real problem with that... Dena Dr. R & Dr. D Bay City, MI June 30, 2004 385/325 How much should I be eating?? I had my surgery June 10. I feel like I'm maybe eating too much. Guest guest
I am a little over a year out- and just to give you an idea of what I usually eat- 1/2 a bagel w/cream cheese for breakfast 1/2 a sandwich for lunch- then I save the rest for an afternoon snack- with 1/2 a small bag of chips sometimes some cookies for dessert or a snack sometimes a fruit cup for a snack last night for dinner I went to Champs and had 1/2 a turkey sandwich with a bowl of onion soup- I managed to eat the whole thing- taking 45 min to an hour- Last night I had some cheese and crackers for a snack Sometimes I will also have a bowl of strawberries with whipped cream-but last night I did have a snickers ice cream bar. I do snack a lot- but I have never been one to eat big meals- I have always been a nibbler- so this surgery works okay for me in that respect. I do have a sweet tooth- it is more manageable since the surgery- but if I want something I have it. I still need to lose about 10lbs which I would probably lose with an increase in exercise and a decrease in carbs. I have found that somethings I can eat more of than others. But it also depends on if I am drinking something and what else I may have eaten already that day. I have found that I can have greater quantities of seafood than beef or chicken. But I am able to eat a variety of foods. It took a long time for a hamburger to not feel like it was rocks in my stomach- sometimes it still does- but it is getting better. I usually will have a hot dog when I go to a cook out because that goes down easier than a hamburger. I remember after my surgery I was curious what people were eating- my diet has evolved over the past year- as yours will too. You will find that somethings work better for you than others- it was a while before I could eat eggs- they went right thru me- but now it is fine- so your stomach will change and tolerate more as time goes by- hang in there Dr. R. 7-1-03 222/143/130 >From: " Dena Lamont " <lamont8831@...> >Reply- >< > >Subject: Re: How much should I be eating?? >Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 09:26:50 -0400 > >Hi Anne, > >I find that I can eat a lot of certain things and very little of others as >well. > >I can eat a good amount of salad, 2 COBBS OF CORN!, mashed potatoes, canned >corned beef hash, sheppards pie, but when it comes to meat like hamburgers, >chicken, pork, or any bread item, pasta, I cannot eat much at all, it's not >that I feel full, but my stomach does not feel right. Guest guest
Taryn my friend, I didn't lose one ounce the first week - not one after surgery! I think I lost about 3 pounds the second week and after the first month, I think I lost a total of maybe 8 pounds. I too was worried and it dawned on me that I lost more weight doing Atkins than with surgery! BUT, after I got through the Stage I and II foods and moved into " regular foods " after about six or eight weeks (can't remember now but I did my best to follow the manuel), I started losing more weight. I was 246.5 on my surgery date (1/12/04) and am now 180 lbs. I've made mistakes - tried to substitute v-8 and OJ for gatorade (works for most but NOT me!), I fell off the whey protein " shots " at night and morning and even at one point (for about two weeks), I didn't take my citricel! I guess my head is really hard because it took me a bit to get the information to sink in. I was on a huge plateau until another person on this board contacted CLOS and asked for help for the same reason. The advice was to add back in the whey protein and take a few vitamin supplements. I followed the advice and the scale dropped 8 pounds in 10 days. From one " slow " loser to another, hang in there and don't focus on the scale so much (I know, I know, easier said than done). I started out a size 22/24 and am now a 12/14. I've " only " lost about 66 pounds even with all my screw ups (for the record, I never strayed for long!). It's all a new learning process. I found when I'm really stressed, my first inclination was to grab carbs or sugar (our office is stocked to the rafters with this crap). Believe me, the first time I did that I regretted it terribly. I didn't dump, but I felt really crappy and had to lay down. Now I think before reach which is what this surgery is all about. I think before I eat - protein first, how much have I had today, how's my gatorade intake, etc. Exercise has been the biggest challenge for me. My life has kicked into more than full throttle these past eight months - a lot of stress, turmoil, emotion, etc. Probably not unlike most people on this board but I, personally, am finding that I'm on the go from 4:30 a.m. to about 10:00 p.m. when I'm absolutely exhuasted and fall into bed. I try to work some, any, exercise in during the day - parking farther away from the office, take stairs when I can, etc., but I just don't feel it's enough. I wonder if my kids would be upset if I started working out with them at their gymnastics, dance, swimming and soccer lessons!!?? I'm sure they would just " die " ! If you need anything else, or more encouragement, feel free to contact me but keep in mind, this board is a wonderful, essential tool in our success so continue to reach out through it! 1/12/04 - Rancho Drs. Guest guest
Thank you so much for that ... I'm glad to hear that its not unheard of after hearing all the great drops everyone else had at first... Im still a little confused on the whey protein? Should I start it? I'm on stage 2... Or is it something you wait to see if you need it or what? also should I start drinking a protein shake for breakfast instead of yogurt (but then add the yogart at lunch?) Is atkins shakes okay? I thought the whey protein was in the manual under only if you need it??? Thanks for your time.. Guest guest
Hi Taryn, I only lost a total of 15 pounds the first month after my surgery, 6-16-04 in FL, and another 15 the second month. So far this month, I have lost 9. I was concerned about the seemingly low weight loss, but Dr. H put it this way, " If you lose 15 pounds per month for 10 months, that's still 150 pounds however you got there! " Try to relax a little and give your body time to adjust to the many changes it is going through. If you are doing the right things, i.e. protein intake is good, taking all your supplements, meds and citrucel, hydration is good, etc., the weight will come off. Even when I don't see the scale change--and yes, I can't resist weighing every morning-- I remind myself that this is a marathon, not a sprint! Take care and blessings to you...... Guest guest
I chew just about every bite 20 - 30 times. I think it makes a difference. (It also fills time while others are eating their WHOLE meal ... and for my brain to get the message of full.) So far so good. I've never thrown up and don't experience nausea. Had one time where something " went through me " too fast. Overall I cannot complain! It was a technique suggested by a hypnotist once. Just thought I'd share it. Believe me, if you eat too fast you will know, the excess food will catch up with you. I did that once with mac and cheese and felt sick for about 2 hours! If you think that you are eating too fast you may be though, try chewing longer, I still have a real problem with that... > > Dena > Dr. R & Dr. D > Bay City, MI > June 30, 2004 > 385/325 > > > How much should I be eating?? > > > I had my surgery June 10. Guest guest
Be reassured. You are fine. (Too many people forget we didn't all start at the same place.) When is the last time you lost 13 lbs in 2 wks?? All is good. Guest guest
I actually gained 2 pounds the first week after surgery, then lost only two pounds the following week--talk about panic!!! But, in the past 14 months, I have lost 117 pounds. Don't despair--it will work if you stick with the program. Good luck. S. How much should I be eating?? > > > I had my surgery June 10. Guest guest
Taryn, Check the manuel on when you can start the whey protein - I can't remember when I started it frankly. But I always did it in addition to my other protein (except for that time period when I thought I didn't need it!!). I started with a " drink " in the morning (1 scoop with a coffee cup of water) and now I'm doing this at night as well. Don't forget your citricel!! I also drink Atkins shakes as well. Here's my rough schedule: WORK DAY (approximate!): 5:00 a.m. whey protein, citricel, vitamins, etc. 6:15 a.m. Atkins shake or 1/2 banana 8:00 a.m. 1/2 of turkey sandwich (never a breakfast person) 11:00 a.m. 1/2 of turkey sandwich (creature of habit) 2:00 p.m. Snack - nuts, protein bar, something like that. 5:30 p.m. Dinner - whatever we're having; protein first then veges then carbs! 8:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. Snack - Atkins shake or protein bar; whey protein, citricel, vitamins, etc. I'm also taking in about 60 ozs of gatorade during the day - it's at my desk, in my car - never go anywhere without it. Now, do I ever dip into the M & M's bowl, have a bit of the donuts on Friday, or enjoy the soft red licorish at the office (also a tub on hand, ug!)? Absolutely. But since the surgery, five M & M's does it just fine for me and I never take them more than once per day (typically more like once per week). The only food I can't eat is whole milk. I can eat anything at all but crave protein and veges (I can probably eat a red onion like an apple - can't get enough and absolutely love it! Weird!!). I hope this little book I've created helps! 1/12/04 Rancho CNCRTWMN <cncrtwmn@...> wrote: Thank you so much for that ... Taryn Wendell wrote: Taryn my friend, I didn't lose one ounce the first week - not one after surgery! I usually will have a hot dog when I go to a cook out because that goes down easier than a hamburger. I remember after my surgery I was curious what people were eating- my diet has evolved over the past year- as yours will too. Guest guest
the whey protein is magic!! it helps you get in the essential protein which speeds weight loss helps trick your body into NOT thinking there is a famine (you are getting protein after all!) whey is great for breakfast.. early on, i used to love having a scoop of vanilla whey mixed with OJ and water and a packet of splenda....throw in some orange or clear citrucel if you wish! shake it all in a capped container with 3 ice cubes and shake like crazy... you can even put in a container of vanilla yogurt for good measure too! these vanilla/orange (creamsicle ) smoothies are addictive and FULL of protein! wheni figured up mine it had 30g protein and lasted the whole time i was getting ready in the AM. xoxoxoox cathy s in va > I am a little over a year out- and just to give you an idea of what I > usually eat- > > 1/2 a bagel w/cream cheese for breakfast > 1/2 a sandwich for lunch- then I save the rest for an afternoon snack- with > 1/2 a small bag of chips > sometimes some cookies for dessert or a snack > sometimes a fruit cup for a snack > last night for dinner I went to Champs and had 1/2 a turkey sandwich with a > bowl of onion soup- I managed to eat the whole thing- taking 45 min to an > hour- > Last night I had some cheese and crackers for a snack > Sometimes I will also have a bowl of strawberries with whipped cream-but > last night I did have a snickers ice cream bar. > > I do snack a lot- but I have never been one to eat big meals- I have always > been a nibbler- so this surgery works okay for me in that respect. Guest guest
Why not do something real productive and read the manual... It offers more real information and guidance than anyone on this board.... It is written by those who developed the procedure. Be reminded gastric bypass surgery is not new it dates back to 1895. If the manual does not give you the answer you want sorry, but the right answer is in there. If you deviate or don't do as instructed in the manual, then you are on your own.... The choice is yours as was the decision to have the surgery. Support, guidance, etc,etc should have been what caused you to decide to have the surgery, now that you have had it follow the instructions in the manual and enjoy the ultimate success.. Mikee - I've read your posts for nearly a year now! You're one of my teachers and guiders! I don't think any of the long-term posters here know that there must be a good deal of us out here who read everything and are guided by it! We may not chime in all the time but we're definately listening!
Guest guest
, Do the math, 6 lbs in 18 days, that is one third of a pound a day, at that rate you will lose 121. 6666 pounds the first year.. Your complaining ? ? ? I don't get it Mikee Hi everyone, > > This is my first time posting to the " other side' I have to add to Taryn and say that I have only lost -------------sit down for this----------------------6 pounds in 18 days. I have never seen anyone who posts that has lost this little in that amount of time at the beginning. I am eating what I should, didnt cheat on the stages, on stage for 2 full weeks, then slowly progressed into stage 2 and that is where I am now. Anyone else lose this slow? It is really starting to get to me and the Dr and CLOS all say that I am going to lose but it seems like I am stuck doing nothing at all. Any others? > > Thanks, > >
Guest guest
Good assessment on the food choices, Dena, I can eat a lot of some things and feel stuffed with others. Mac and Cheese seems so benign, but I just cannot eat it well. I think it's a combination of eating it too fast (it's so tasty) and the expansion of the noodles. I do find the Easy-Mac goes down better. I think those noodles have been precooked and dehydrated which may have something to do with their expansion in the tummy. Bread is also a killer for me--just feels like a rock. Today I had my first experience with post-eating hiccups. I ate almost half of a Subway wrap and a few Baked Lays. I felt really full a little later-- really ful--and then came the violent hiccups. A few times I thought I might throw up and they kind of hurt. A few minutes later my stomache felt less full and the hiccups went away. It was good behavior modification--didn't really enjoy it too much. Guest guest
This response is a bit harsh. I've read, re-read, highlighted, and outlined the manual AND I have a medical background, yet I still sometimes have questions. I agree that the answers given by respondants are anecdotal, but they are also very useful, especially when they are lifestyle-oriented. In a perfect world, we would all have quick surgeries, never have diarrhea, always lose lots of weight, and never have a question that couldn't be answered by the manual. Guess what? The world aint perfect, my friend! Things aren't black and white; they are grey. Don't believe me? Ask R. Rutledge (or any other good doctor). They will confirm what I have said. I'm thrilled that you have been successful, and that you never have any questions, but there is no need to denigrate those who are a bit more inquisitive. Fortunately, RR doesn't seem to be offended by our questions and happily answers them, as a good medical professional SHOULD do! I paid $17K out of my pocket for this procedure. I'll ask any damn questions I want to! Enough said. Joanie 5/25/04 Drs.
