Guest guest Posted March 23, 2002 Report Share Posted March 23, 2002 I switched to Protonix from Prilosec a couple of months ago at my doctor's suggestion and have not had any noticeable side effects. I also had no side effects with Prilosec, which I took regularly for over two years. > For several years I have taken Prilosec and had good result with one exception. Prilosec seems to cause severe constipation. When I saw my doc recently he suggested I try Protonix. I am just wondering if any of you have tried Protonix and what complications you may have had. I read the literature on it and I am not thrilled. It is really indicated for erosive esophagus. The FDA also says its use should be limited to 8 weeks. Any thoughts, suggestions. > > J.C. Guest guest Posted August 27, 2004 Report Share Posted August 27, 2004 Hi Donna, I believe the manual says as long as you're " averaging " a weight loss of ten pounds per month - for most of us, that's at least a year's worth of actigal - I believe the protonix is only to be taken for the first few weeks/months - I'm at work and don't have the manual right in front of me, but I know the actigal is the one we take for about a year, that is, as long as we're averaging ten pounds per month - I don't think it means that we have to have lost ten pounds per month - gosh, could I have made this more confusing???? You should never be sent home after any hospital stay without instructions on what to do once you return home. Prilosec is the same. I took Prilosec and Dr. H. told me to take two pills a day not one. Which makes since because why would you take less of an over the counter product? It is also stopped at three months. He in turn gave me a copy of those when I had my meds filled. It is slightly different than the manual direction in that the manual said they had changed to Prilosec, but the discharge instructions still had Protonix (which is more cost-effective for me since my co-pay is only $20/month). I did also receive discharge instructions from the hospital which everyone should get as part of your discharge planning, but it was not very inclusive or detailed. This Protonix/Prolosec thing is one of the most significant contradictions in the manual, though there are others. I hope it gets fixed as it is an ongoing source of confusion. Yes, the Prilosec is twice a day, the Protonix is once for 3-4 months (according to my version of the manual) PS-I have never really had a relationship with my pharmacist, but I have been going to my local Target the pst two years and the Pharmacist has been fabulous. He specially ordered the Hibeclens, he restocked the single dose of Protonix that I was to take pre-op and I just took one of the post-op 30 so I didn't have to pay for the 1 pill, he printed out all the Rx and OTC labels on a seperate sheet for me and he remembered me at refill time and asked me about the surgery/process. Many people don't realize how clinical the pharmacy curriculum is...we do A LOT of clinical assessments, care plans, and consult with doctors (who have far less pharmaceutical training) on proper dosages of meds. As a result, most pharmacists can answer medical questions with confidence. In recent polls, pharmacists came out as the most " trusted " medical professionals, something that really pleased me. New grads all have doctorates, and in many states, pharms have prescribing authority. As far as chains go, Target impresses me more than the others. Although I don't need counseling on my meds, they always take the time to answer questions and give advice. The techs at my Target are all certified and are very knowledgable. I assume you are from the US. Because if in Canada the conversion for prilosec is losec and they are only 20 mg and for the conversion of protonix it is called pantoloc and they are 40 mg. Now maybe I made that really confusing. But if from the US just ignore the last part about all the conversions and everything should be fine. LOL. Someone asked, and I wondered myself, why is the Vixx OK if it is also an NSAID. If our liver is reported to be OK why would Tylenol not be better (taken infrequently) since it is easier on the tummy than the Vioxx, which could still harm the tummy?
