There are very few plant foods that have any appreciable amount of Vit.

D in them. At least when compared to Cod liver oil. However, raw

sunflower seeds and their sprouts do contain a fair amount of Vit. D.

So, how much time do you spend in the sun when the sun shines in rusty

ol' Washington? Shoot you might even consider hitting the tanning beds

and go for an infrared sauna session. Either that or take a drive

further south.

Infrared saunas work for sunlight?! I LOVE those. We are saving to buy one, but they don't have lights for the infrared part, it's the heating system that is the infrared side of the saunas, at least the ones I've been in.

These are something like what we want, but nothing here says anything about Vitamin D. I think this is the company near us that we have looked at and they put full spectrum lighting in the saunas, which would help with the Vitamin D aspect, but I don't think just an infrared sauna will supply Vitamin D. Or I might be wrong, I hope, I hope, I hope!

And I am outside as much as possible with as little clothing as possible in the summer WITHOUT glasses or contact lenses as much as possible.

No the infrared is only one aspect of sunlight. The others are the full

visible spectrum of light and the ultra violets. That is why I mentioned

the tanning beds along with the sauna. However, if you can get the full

spectrum lights that will help.

In Russia, there is a certain city or villiage way up north in Siberia

that almost never sees any light. They use special ultraviolet lamps

that everyone stands under for a specified amount of time to assist with

Vit. D. At least this is what they used to do. It was quite an old

article that I read in NG I believe.

If you are getting sufficient sun from spring to late fall then I

wouldn't worry too much about lack of sun over the winter. You can

easily maintain through the use of tanning beds, infrared light, full

spectrum light and eating foods high in Vit. D.

How long would you recommend being in a tanning bed? Because I really only get what little sun we see in half of June, July and August. The rest of the time I'm in a school room.

Shari

– you are right, no vitamin D from any source of light except the sun. I looked into that a few years ago myself, and

nowhere could I find a company that could tell me their light would supply Vit.

D. A full spectrum light will supply

light, LIKE the sun, but no vit. D.

Hi Carol,

The lights themselves do not provide vitamin D. Not even the sun does

that. What they do provide the proper spectrum of light or combination

that allows your body to manufacture its own Vit. D.

I belong to a tanning salon -- keep a light tan all year long -- and use the

stand-up booths. I don't like the beds because I always burn my lower back

because it lays too close to the bulbs. The booths are much more even.

There are two kinds of booths that I know of: the regular ones are 10-12

minutes, depending on your level of current tan, and the super ones are nine

minutes (but you must have a tan already to go in those or you'll burn).

" allows your body to manufacture its own Vit. D "

Ah ha! Thank you! So would sitting in front of a light box with full

spectrum lighting be enough absorption through the eyes or does it HAVE (I

know that would be the best case) to overall body exposure?

I know around here folks use the light boxes for depression. So I'm

wondering if sunlight through the eyes would be sufficient to produce Vit D

in the winter.

See Don's message regarding the lights set up the condition for your own body to make Vit D.. same as the sun making the conditions right in your body. Suziangeldestiny <angeldestiny@...> wrote: That is odd......the vets tell us to use it for vit D
