I sound like a dummy this morning.. Thanks Zoey>> A bowel obstruction is anything that interferes with the normal flow of 'stuff' through the intestines. In my husbands case, it was a kink in the plumbing that got progressively tighter over time, until it wouldn't let ANYTHING pass through. This caused horrible pain in the abdomen, and vomiting. Emergency surgery was performed and a 4 " section was removed to get rid of the kink. He is fine now. My son's ruptured appendix at age 6 caused the surgeon to have to move his innards around to 'mop up the mess' thus disturbing his plumbing. Within the next year, adhesions grew to fasten his plumbing back in place, and it did too good of a job. It wrapped around part of his intestines and closed so tightly that it obstructed his bowels and the blockage caused the intestines to balloon out above the adhesion. His symptoms were the same as his fathers but simply cutting the adhesion released the cause of the problem and he was fine. Abdominal surgery CAN cause these kinds of problems, but not all DO. In both of the cases in my family, the surgeries were OPEN, not lap. I would think that there is less chance of this happening with a lap.
