Who is this Steve person screaming No internet searches allowed. What???

Yeah, right, Steve. Sure. Uh Huh. We're gonna all obey that dictum!

Ha! Take this, :

N = R* fp ne fl fi fc L

By the way, I'll BUY A BEER for the first person who cal tell the list what

that equation is...

Steve...

That would be the Drake equation....

R is the rate at which stars have been born in the Milky Way per

year, fp is the fraction of these stars that have solar systems of

planets, ne is the average number of " Earthlike " planets (potentially

suitable for life) in the typical solar system, fl is the fraction of

those planets on which life actually forms, fi is the fraction of

life-bearing planets where biological evolution produces an

intelligent species, fc is the fraction of intelligent species that

become capable of interstellar radio communication, and L is the

average lifetime of a communicating civilization in years

Well, google says that it is called the drake equation:

From: http://physics.indiana.edu/~destelle/drake.html

Drake Equation

(N = R* x fs x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L)

The following is a Drake Equation Calculator(finds the # of

intelligent civilizations able to communicate within our galaxy)

R* fs fp ne fl fi fe L

NAME DESCRIPTION Est.

R* Average rate of Star formation within a year 20

fs fraction of stars that are suitable " suns " for planetary systems

0.1

fp # of suitable suns WITH planetary systems 1/2

ne # of planets in the Continuosly Habitable Zone ?

fl (given time) the # of planets on which life actually originates ?

fi Fraction of these planets who form some form of intelligence ?

fe fraction of intelligence of these planets that develop desire to

communicate w/ others ?

L average or mean lifetime (in years) of a communicative civilization

Luckily, I am a librarian, and after a few minutes in the stacks, and

with the aid of something similar to " Cliff's notes " I have learned

that this is something called the " ideal gas law " . I tried to find

exactly what each variable stood for, but it wasn't in English. I'm

sure it has to do with pressure and volume because the little I read

used the example of filling a football with helium, and the fact that

it wouldn't travel farther than one filled with oxygen. I think.

Well, I'm off to look for these cysts (bleck).

PV=nRT

Pressure times volume = #moles of gas times the ideal gas constant times the

temperature...

What did you calculate to be the number of communicating extraterrestrial

civilizations?

Well you see it was very complicated and such a stroke of genius that

my work was immediately removed from my desk by government agents.

Now that I think of it, there was a few minutes there I can't account

for... I'm sure my memory has been modified and I regret that I no

longer know the answer.

For whatever it's worth, I just used that Drake calculator and got 3645

civilizations.
