Guest guest
Hi y'all..I wanted to let you all know that in about 7 months there will hopefully be another healthy post-MGB baby among us. I am about 10 weeks pregnant, and so far everything is looking very good...my dr. did an early ultrasound and I heard the heartbeat this week, so it is finally starting to seem real. I got pregnant at about 8 months post-op, unplanned (wanted another but had planned to wait a year as Dr. R. suggests) but my OBGYN does not feel that the surgery poses any greater risks at all. My weight loss had slowed and I was losing less than 5 pounds a month (I have gone from 267 on 9-14-00 to 155 today ... woohoo!!!). Overall, she thinks I will have a much healthier pregnancy because of the weight loss from the MGB, compared to the last time around (I have a son who turned 2 the day I had my surgery). Statistically, I am at more risk because of my, ahem, advanced age (I turned 38 in May). Although I would have preferred to wait a few months, I am happy to be doing this now, because I am pretty darn sure I am going to need some plastic surgery, and I wanted to wait until I was done with childbearing so as not to stretch everything back out again. I am going to be one hot 40-year-old mama toting around a couple of young 'uns! Couple of medical notes, for those of you who are considering having children. My doctor immediately took me off the three One Source, and the extra Vitamin A supplement I was taking, and put me on one prenatal vitamin daily. I found out that more than 10,000 IU of Vit. A a day for pregnant women has been linked to birth defects. (Lots of info on the 'net about this; I can send links to anyone interested.) Each One Source has 5,000 IU. Now maybe we don't absorb that much, but no one knows for sure, and it's certainly not a risk I was going to take. So I would encourage anyone thinking of getting pregnant to talk to your doctor, and maybe find a multi-vitamin with less Vit. A (or a prenatal) and start taking it BEFORE you start trying to conceive. I continue to take fish oil, calcium citrate and an extra B complex daily. Also, one bad thing about the timing is I was scheduled to get my EGD right when I found out I was pregnant (I have had a couple of bile reflux episodes) but have had to postpone indefinitely because my OB would prefer I do not do it while pregnant unless it is emergency. And since I had to convince both my PCP and the gastro guy that I should have it in the first place (both were nice about it, but made pretty clear they were just approving it to ease my mind, lol) I didn't consider it an emergency. Anyway, sorry to be so long, but I know this is a topic a lot of us are interested in. I'll keep you posted on our progress. mgb 9-14-00 267/155/probably a little bigger for awhile!/135 __________________________________________________
