I had a couple episodes, one that I would call severe. I woke up with the

same feeling you did, but I was vomiting. so much bile I couldn't make it

stop. It hurt and scared me. I too was afraid to go to sleep It happened

again about a week ago but I did not vomit. Let me tell you what helps me.

The prevacid. I took it the minute I woke up this last time and I swear it

helped. I now take one every night before bed. I hope this helps you. I look

forward to hearing every one else's experiences, that bile thing is the only

problem I have had and it scares the heck out of me.

Eat crackers BEFORE you go to bed. That seems to help ALOT. Sometimes a

piece of bread will do the trick, but crackers are the best. I seem to have

it most often if I have had sugar before bed or something tomato based.

Good luck...It is GROSS!

First Bile Reflux Episode

Well, what I thought would never happen to me....did happen...last night.

Actually,

at about 4am this morning I woke up with a burning sensation in my throat

and nose.

It took me a few seconds to wake up and realize what was happening. I was

choking

and coughing from the burning sensation but did not actually feel anything

come into

my mouth. I'm guessing I had a mild to moderate bile reflux attack. To say

the least

it was not fun and not something that I'd like to repeat.

Having said that I feel that I need to ask if those of you that have had

this happen have

it often, rarely or never. And, what if anything can I do to prevent it

from happening

again. I've read about propping the head of my bed up and I'm going to try

that, I've

also read about not eating right before going to bed - going to do that too.

Anyone

have any other suggestions?? Also - when it happened I tried drinking

something

acidic to try to neutralize things - all that I had was orange juice and

mountain dew.

Neither really helped - I also had a few saltine crackers. I ended up

falling asleep

about 2 hours later in my recliner. When I woke up again the burning was

almost

gone.

This was a scary thing for me - I'm almost afraid to go to bed tonight - I'm

hoping that

this will be a rare occurrence for me otherwise I don't know what I'll do!

Thanks for any advice.

Tonya, I haven't had a bile reflux myself and it doesn't sound pleasant. I

will tell you that I take my last vitamin before I go to bed and sometimes I

eat some dry cereal (oatmeal squares) before I go to bed. The one thing

that I do thought that might help you is I eat extra strength Tums with

calcium before I go to bed usually four of them. It keeps me from tasting

the iron and vitamin taste that you sometimes get from the multiple vitamin.

I also keep tums in my night stand for old times sake, I used to have a

lot of heart burn before the MGB. I hope this might help you.

i found an article in a medical magazine at my dr's office that said

that acid reflux can ofter trigger a bile reflux attack....... so

maybe prevention is worth a pound of cure in this case. i take my

prevacid daily.... around 8 PM and i always take my citrucel around

an hour before bedtime (coats tummy) and i have had noo problems. i

hope this helps!

Oh Tonya! I know exactly how you feel about being afraid to go to

bed! I was just a few months post op when the anti MGB militia

started cranking and only days after I joined the uuhhmmm " truth "

list....I woke up in the middle of the night gasping! Bile or acid

or something came shooting out my nose!!! I ran to the bathroom and

threw up....I could barely breathe....and I was soooooo afraid that I

was " a bile victim " !!!!

I really cant express the degree of fear I felt! However, out of

exhaustion I finally did drift off to sleep the next night....and

nothing happened. Now it has been 8 or 9 months since that incident

and I have never had it happen again!

I know now what I did to cause it....not only had I eaten something

right before I went to bed but I took ALL three vitamins right before

I laid down too!!!

I was asking for trouble! As a matter of fact, to this day, I dont

do very well with those horse pill vitamins no matter what time of

day I take them! And thank goodness, they are the only thing that

messes up my tummy. I have to take them with my citrucel if I want

to be sure that they will not burn.

So look at what time you are eating, what you are eating, when you

are taking your meds, and like you said...at what angle you are

sleeping. And remember....with a little preventative action...this

may never ever happen to you again!

Good luck!

Hi Tonya,

I have had the same thing at night. My Gastro Dr. put me on zantac

before I go to bed. He said I ccould buy it off the shelf but I have

a prescription card that allows me to get a script for 5.00 and that

on the shelf is much higher. I also eat about 3 or 4 tums right

before laying down. Haven't had one since he put me on zantac. He

didn't seem to think it is a problem if it is under control with

meds. Go Figure!!

Tonya,

I have had 2 attacks, on 2 months post op and one 3 months post

op. Now, I do not eat for several hours prior to falling asleep.

Also, I don't take my vitamins before going to sleep. If I am going

to eat anything spicy, then I do it early in the day. It hasn't

happened since I made a few changes in my diet. I hope that it isn't

a regular thing. OH, and also I NEVER go to bed without taking my

citrucel first.

Tonya,

I've never had any bile or acid come into my mouth or nose, but I

have had a burning or pressure sensation in my throat during the

night. It's happened about 5-6 times now. It is usually after

eating quite a bit of junk food right before bed, like potato chips

or brownies or something spicey. I did/do have a moderate case of

gastritis so I now take a prevacid every day (in the middle of the

day) and always take citrucel and 2 tums before bed. If I wake up

with that pressure/slight burning feeling, I eat some crackers, drink

milk and go back to bed with 2 pillows and fall right back to sleep.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tonya,

I'm 1 yr post-op and I've had one episode of mild bile reflux that

happened when I was about 10 months out. You're right, it's scary and

it bothered me because I had experienced no problems up to that

point. What I finally realized, is the night of that episode, I had

eaten way to many sweets during day. I can tolerate sweets if I eat

them in moderation, but we were working that day and I kept putting

hard candy in my mouth (I think I was bored). I'm watching waht I eat

a lot closer and I've had no further problems. Hope you don't either!

I keep Coca cola in the fridge at all times. It is the only thing that seems

to stop the bile. However, once it gets into your nose and lungs, there is

not much you can do about that burning.
