Guest guest
>Hmmm...but they do need to address the why of the behavior. Yes, I told that to the principal even before she told me he was going to be suspended. I also talked to him about the incident and the punishment in front of her so she could see how little he comprehends about the situation. >Yes, you can fault them for being ignorant! This is their job! I guess the reason I say that is that our district pools its special ed resources into various buildings and our neighborhood school is not one of those buildings. They are TRYING and that means a lot. They HAVE given training to all staff, including busdrivers, but it does need to be ongoing, not just a one-time thing. It's NOT the way I think it SHOULD be done (pooling resources) but that's the way our district does things. If it weren't for that, I'd have very few complaints about our district. >they stuck my kid in a CLOSET! That is horrible!! Almost hard to believe, I'll be pretty 'obnoxious' about school staff training too! >So, take this opportunity, work with your advocate, and work with the school about how to handle these things in the future. Exactly our plan! Great minds think alike. >His FBA must be updated -- by a trained, qualified, neutral, third- party professional -- NOT by someone already involved in the situation. The East Shore Center has done ours in the past and they followed the protocol you described to the letter. They will definitely be involved in the near future. >If agressive behavior was never addressed before because it never was exhibited by your child in the school setting, that tells me that there is something in the environment that is causing it to come out now. Yes, I completely agree. >Does the school have a social skills group as part of his program? Not as far as I know but I am going to ask them to start one if they haven't already. I know just the staff person who could pull it off too. >We'll be pulling for you! Thanks! I need all the positive energy I can get! Happy New Year and thanks for the great feedback.
