: I guess Dr. R got to be like the Nascar Pit crew. They change 4

tires in 17 seconds plus filling up with gas and washing the windshield. If

they take longer they are in trouble because their driver looses his spot in

line. Phyllis

Dr. R COULD do the MGB at other hospitals. It is Durham Regional that has

put it all on hold pending the outcome of a peer review of the procedure and

because of all the you know what that got stirred up with BCBS...BUT...I

believe that he is taking the time to clear his name and reputation and that

of the surgery. Other doctors across the country are performing the MGB and

it still has lots of support from gastro doctors etc.

Lastly, as for the length of time to perform the MGB, Dr. R told me it was

like changing a tire, if you had never done it, it took a long time, if you

changed 4 a day, you got pretty quick about it. I don't remember how long

his first MGB surgery was at UNC, but it was a LONG time compared to his

most recent surgeries.

Marie,

I'm hoping at the picnic that Dr. R will give us an update on when he may be

able to do surgeries again. This seems SO strange that other doctor's are

able to and he's not! AND HE IS THE BEST!!! It irritates me, to tell you

the truth that someone or something is holding him up with saving more lives

and performing more miracles like he's done in so many lives. Just don't

seem right or fair! I was in the very last group to have surgery on

3/29/01.

He hasn't perform any surgeries after that date. I have thanked God many,

many times for allowing my surgery to go without a hitch.

I like everyone else hope that Dr. R gets things cleared up soon for his

sake and for the sake of those waiting.

I personally think too much emphasis is put on how much time the surgery

takes. I agree that being under anesthesia the least amount of time

possible is good but ----- I wouldn't have cared if the surgery took 3

hours as long as it was done properly and I had a good result. I agree

with Dr. R that the reason his is so much shorter is due to repetition.

For most people it probably doesn't matter much how

long it takes. However, there are some of us with

health problems that could not have had the surgery

except for the fact that it was so short.

My cardiologist at first told me no. He was assuming

it was a 3 or 4 hour operation. When he looked into

it and found out it was only 30 minutes he changed his

mind.

When I was being prepped for surgery at DRH the

anesthesiologist questioned Dr. R about my heart

condition and asked if it was wise to let me " go

under " . Dr. R told him that he felt most anyone could

withstand 30 minutes of anesthesia. I came very

close to not being able to have this done. Because

of Dr. Rutledge my heart condition has improved

immensely. My cardiologist is anxious for Dr. R to

get back so he can refer more patients.

At clinic Dr. R told us that it took him 3 to 4 hours

to do the MGB in the beginning.

I am going to try this again. I posted this earlier today and it

never showed up.

For most people it probably doesn't make much difference how long the

surgery tiakes, but for some of us it makes all the difference in the

world. I have a heart condition that almost made it not possible for

me to have this surgery. In fact, my cardiologist said no at first.

Then when he looked into it and saw that it was a 30 minute surgery,

etc, he said yes. Also- while I was at DRH being prepped for

surgery, the anesthesiologist took Dr. R aside and questioned him on

the wisdom if putting me under. Thank God Dr. R said he felt that I

could withstand 30 minutes of anesthesia.

Thanks to the MGB my heart condition has improved drastically. My

cardiologist is anxiously waiting for Dr. to gt back to business so

he can refer other patients.

I would not have been a candidate for the RNY or the MGB as it is

performed by other doctors.

Also- at clinic Dr. R told us that it took him 3-4 hours to do the

MGB in the beginning.

Margaret,

I am so gald we had DrR. I too was glad he took less time. In fact I

was scheduled for but when the anesthia guy talked to DrR , they

canceled and set it for that friday, at Durham Reginal, just in case

they needed anything, I was already in the hospital. I was glad they did.

But thank God , Doctor R did it and everything went well. It took him 38

minutes, and I had no trouble to wake up. Other times I did, and I had

asthma, in fact, I had my inhaller with me in my hand, the whole time,

before I went to sleep. I remember when they straped me on the table, they

said we will put this here, and I was out , I never needed my inhaller

again, Thank God. Now I do not take anything since surgery, I was going

for shots, and medication, and inhallers, and I am off my blood pressure

pills, a couple of months ago, my doctor said my pressure is fine now, all I

take is a water pill. I too am very happy to have found DrR. He has changed

my like. I can do so much now, that I could not do before. Margaret, I

have written to you a few times before you went away and after you came back,

but I never got a response, before you alway wrote to me. What happened.

That photo with the dolphin is great, you and hubby look happy and good

together. See you soon at the dinner and picnic.
