I am working on some activites for a disability awareness week at Falls Lenox

sometime this school year. In researching I came across 2 touching books. See

attached for some inspiring, encouraging words that I thought would be good

A book about Disability Awareness and Friendships

…“Mom” Kate said, “Why does God make someone like Timmy retarded?” … “Honey,

that’s a hard questions to answer…but what I’ve come to believe is that God

makes us all different. Each of us is here on earth for a reason, and each of

us has a special mission to carry out- Timmy included…You see sweetheart, no

one is perfect. We all have to realize that God loves us just as we are. Even

though it may sometimes seem as if there are lots of things wrong with us, I

don’t think God sees it that way. I think God makes us all different and

special. All we have to do is be ourselves and God will help us make a big

difference in the world...my friend Tina once told me (about her sister Rosie

with disabilities) that as she got older, she stopped wishing for a sister who

could walk, and she stopped worrying about what other kids might think or say.

She realized she loved Rosie just the way she was. After all, she told me,

Rosie was always loving, kind, honest, funny and very loyal…What sister could

ask for more?...when each of us looks at someone like Timmy (or Rosie) we

should look at the things he CAN do, not at what he cant do. I believe you two

can have a great friendship because you’re truly more alike than you are

different. “Mom, I think Timmy and I are going to be friends for a long time,

too. I can just feel it… If anyone ever asks me “What’s wrong with Timmy?”… I

am going to smile and say “Why, nothing…nothing at all!
