Guest guest
Josiane, Melatonin is available OTC in the US, as it is classified as a " dietary supplement " and not as a drug. My personal experience of taking it every night for a couple of years is that it is both safe and very effective; I sleep deeply and wake feeling refreshed in a way I have not since adolescence. Before I started taking it I researched it and found that the US military tested it extensively in the 1950s and found that it caused no permanent ill effects even in extremely high doses. There are a number of Internet pharmacies based in the US. Here is one that says it ships internationally (many do not): http://www.prices-power.com/fax.htm Good luck. I understand that melatonin is being used by some of you to help these problems. However, melatonin is not available here in Belgium. So could someone please answer these questions : a/ is melatonin available " over the counter " in the U.S. ? b/ could it be post ordered ? Guest guest
<< Both have asthma and allergies. At 41/2 I stopped milk with improvement in asthma. >> Asthma can be due to elevated sulfur (thiol) levels, and milk is a major dietary source of sulfur - this isn't necessarily due to casein exclusion. Guest guest
Thanks, I needed to talk to my neuro about that becuse I have seen many medlines on mercury and melatonin. Have you ever read any work by ANDREA AXT? She has a fascinating web site on that where she states kids with autism have pineal gland malfunction, this would explain the shunted seratonin problems they have (too much or too little). And also the sleep problems. This is all interconnected I feel with the heavy metal toxicity as well as endocrine disruptors which controls hormonal loops. Guest guest
I give my daughter without seizures this and have seen a difference, now it is my sons turn. I give them Mannatonin which also has a bit a valarian root too. How about valerian? Kathy [ ] melatonin >Jim I checked with the harvard neurology web site and the doctor >there didn't feel it would be a problem and thought it was a really >safe supplement for sleep at 1 to 1 1/2mg at bed time. > > > > >
Guest guest
NO but I will read her research too. Our kids problems are complex and are likely due to multiple toxic effects of meavy metals and other toxins, so the more you can cleanse them and normalize the disrupted functions the better our kids should get. I am still looking for the end point when I can stop the interventions. I will withdraw the seemingly least helpful and largely resolved first and so on and see what happens. I will reintroduce if they regress of stall out and so on. Beverly > Thanks, I needed to talk to my neuro about that becuse I have seen > many medlines on mercury and melatonin. Guest guest
Beverly, It is so wonderful to hear about the success you have had with your children!!! Would you please tell me how your children reacted while they were taking DMSA? Tired? Short Tempered? We are going to start detox soon and I want to be prepared. Thank you for sharing with us! Guest guest
Trudy, they were neither tired nore short tempered. Once my daughter said her head hurt , but it was short lived. They were pretty good, but by the day after the three day cycle they would be unusually bright and showed definite improvement. After 6 weeks they leveled off but cont. to get better. I stoped twice for colds or fever and made sure to give calcium magnesium zinc iorn and trace minerals as detox with dmsa also takes out good minerals with the metals. A good diet and nights sleep are important as you're putting their bodies thru a big change. melatonin, 1mg , at bed time does alot to get them a good nights rest too. good luck, beverly > >when my kids were 3 1/2 they were 1st dx. Guest guest
Beverly, This is a remarkable story. Can I add your twins to my case studies which are posted on my website. You can go to http://tlredwood.home .mindspring.com to read a few. Information is posted with initials. You can see the format that I use. I need known exposurers and any quotes from formal evaluations before and after treatment from professional also help to document that the improvement is not just parent perception. Also if any other parents what to share their childs progress now that we have a number of parents chelating, please email me as well. I hope to get the case studies up and running again and please remind me if I have left out your child. This information really helps when we go to FDA, CDC, NIH and can say we have documented evidence of mercury body burdens in autistic children whose symptoms are documented to improve after treatment. If you did, than I will not be the one to question your motovations for disagreeing with these studies. It is clear melatonin is helpful in detoxifing the brain from heavy metals. I am certain reducing the total body load with other chelators is highly desireable as well. I do not attack your ALA theory, but I cannot find research to support it. I am interested in learning more about ALA but I need to read research to understand the actions you allege it has. Please cite them for us and be careful , nobody knows everything about anything. Guest guest
My son also has a bad reaction to melatonin. The next day he is more easily upset. He also has a difficult time with tryptophan or should I say tryptophan doesn't work on him the way it should. I got a Rx for it and thought it would help him sleep or at least get sleepy in the evening so he would go to bed before midnight, but no matter how much I gave him it didn't work. Then I tried 5HTP and still no shuteye. Maybe because melatonin is made from tryptophan there is some connection. Here there seemed to be some association with melatonin, of course it may be coincidental. We are about to start on DMSA. Given that others have used melatonin as part of a successful treatment, I am of course wondering what to do now about the melatonin. Back in, or leave it out? Wait until we start DMSA+LA, then put it back in? Could the worse symptoms have been caused by the melatonin? If so, why? Have others had reactions to melatonin? Thanks in advance for any answers, suggestions, or comments. Gerard. >>

Guest guest
My daughter has reacted the same way when on melatonin so we stopped it. Later I read an article that sometimes in conjuction with B-6 it can cause this and one should switch to P5P and then try melatonin again. We just started using the P5P and I want to give her a week or two on it before I start the melatonin again. I'll let you know how it goes. Lori > I have some questions about melatonin. There is one thing that I have found with supplements of many kinds, including melatonin. Make sure that you have a good quality bottle of the supplement, one that hasn't been shipped or stored badly, and one that is from a reputable company. We have tried some things, and found them not so good. Later when we tried them again, with a different brand, we had a different response. The " alternative " supplements are not regulated by anybody to speak of, and you don't always know what you are getting. Melatonin is one that seems to us to be especially that way. The brand of melatonin that we have been using for several years now is Source Natural, and we have been very happy with it. I'm not promoting it above other brands, for there are many good ones out there, and I have no financial interest in any of them. Guest guest
I've seen melatonin with magnesium or B-6. Is this ok or should it be plain melatonin?
