UNDERSTANDING THE SOCIAL FRAMEWORK

SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS AND SOCIAL SKILLS -

AND ITS IMPACT ON CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

JANUARY 10, 2007

A STATEWIDE PARENT CONFERENCE

SPONSORED BY THE OHIO CENTER FOR AUTISM AND LOW INCIDENCE

Understanding social expectations and learning social skills is a major challenge for children and youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Failure to understand the social framework can increase a child’s anxiety, decrease the ability to achieve, and result in challenging behavior.

At this exciting conference specifically designed for parents, Kari Dunn Buron will review what we can learn from the research on social thinking. Best of all, she will offer practical strategies for teaching social understanding, self-monitoring, and relaxation techniques that will provide the support that children and youth with ASD need to be successful at home, at school, and in the community.

YOU WILL LEARN:

The definition of social cognition and what research says about the relationship between cognition and autism spectrum disorders

A systematic way to teach social information to children and youth with ASD

Five elements of nonverbal social communication that impacts social success

Three areas for directly addressing deficits in social understanding

The Anxiety Curve Model and ways to teach relaxation to children with ASD as a way to help them be better learners and happier, more successful overall

PRESENTER:

KARI DUNN BURON has been working with students with autism for over 25 years. She is a recently retired special education teacher from Minnesota and the designer of and coordinator for the Autism Spectrum Disorder Certificate Program at Hamline University (a graduate program for educators). Kari is also one of the founding members of the Minnesota Autism Network, a statewide network of ASD educational consultants. She is the co-author of The Incredible Five Point Scale and the author of When My Autism Gets Too Big and A 5 Is Against the Law.

DIRECTIONS:

From the NORTH: I-270 to Easton Exit. The first traffic light is

Stelzer Road—make a left on Stelzer Road and follow for

approximately 2 miles to the Citygate Business Park on the right.

From the SOUTH: I-270 to Rt. 62/I-670 Exit West and follow Airport

sign. Exit at Airport/Stelzer Road. Turn left on Stelzer Road and

follow to Citygate Business Park on the left.

From I-670 EAST: Exit at Airport/Stelzer Road Exit. Turn left on

Stelzer Road to Citygate Business Park on the left.

From the WEST: Take I-70 East to I-270 or I-270 North and East,

or I-670 and follow the directions listed above.

Citygate-Stelzer detour as of Dec. 4 (http://www.fcesc.org for updates on this construction)

As of Monday, Dec. 4, Citygate Drive is closed at Stelzer Road for intersection work. The closure is expected to last through Jan. 3 (possibly longer in the event of weather). Check this page often for the latest status.

Our suggested detour for north/westbound Citygate traffic (coming to the ESCFC from Steltzer) is to take Stelzer to Agler, turning left on Agler and then left on Citygate Drive south.

For southbound Stelzer traffic, turn west (right) on Agler and south (left) on Citygate.

Eastbound Citygate traffic (those leaving the ESC) should follow the detour route in the opposite direction.

There are several alternate routes, including taking Cassady Avenue north to Alger Road, and then east (right) on Agler Road, then right on Citygate Drive south.
