Margie - Sounds like you are in the Cleveland area, but wanted to put

a plug in for a ped. neurologist at Akron Children's. Dr. Margaret

McBride spent a long time explaining my son's EEG to me and answered

all my questions. When I left, it was so late, all the office staff

had left. She really took a long time with me making sure I

understood everything.

And BTW, my son's developmental ped was the one who prescribed the

EEG. If you already have a phys for your child that you like,

perhaps s/he could refer you to neurologist. Chris

Our insurance is typically Cleveland Clinic based (Medical Mutal),

however it was accepted without any problems at Akron Childrens.

As for seeing Dr. Demio...I know the group is very pro-Demio, and I'm

not bashing him...but if a child is having seizures and needs an EEG,

she truly needs to see a Neurologist for evaluation, diagnosis, and

testing....perhaps I am wrong, but I didn't think Dr. Demio was board

certified in neurology.

Margie,

Dr. Irwin s out of Fairview Hospital (Cleveland Clinic System)

is a neurologist. He had an EEG performed on our son when his was

young to rule out seizures.

Thanks.

My daughter sees Dr Kotagal at the Cleveland Clinic. He specializes

in Pediatric epilepsy and sleep disorders. He is excellent!! He is

very thorough and listens to my concerns. We have done a VEEG at

the clinic and also numerous EEG's. I have been very happy with

them.

Right now my daughter has been seizure free for 6 months-Thank God.

His phone # is 216-444-9083.

I am so grateful to all who responded to my call for help/input...what a wonderful resource the Autism NE is!!

We will be going to the Cleveland Clinic for the EEG...Dr. Kotagal will be reviewing the results... The Clinic's Center for Autism uses him as well... my best to all and special thoughts to Diane and your child...6-months free from seizure activity,so very happy for you.

BY the way does anyone know how many electrodes are placed on a small child's head? I'm going to write a social story to help prepare my daughter for the procedure and was just wondering...( I could call the EEG/neurology dept.).

Take care all,

Margie

I don't remember how many electrodes my son had (maybe 8?), BUT

please have the social story include a smelly and cold-to-the-touch

alcohol based cleanser for after the EEG to clean the adhesive

used. That's the one part of the procedure that I was unaware of,

what was missing from our social story, and what freaked my son

out. Chris

As I recall they used more than 20 for my daughter. They aren't painful. But she has a lot of hair and it took a couple of weeks for all the adhesive to come out.

Thank you for the reply...I called the EEG this a.m. and they informed me that they'll be using 24 electrodes...their summation of the procedure was that it would be cold, smelly and a lot of rubbing ...thanks again.

Have a good day!

Margie, You could also perhaps try to play around with your daughter's head a lot/gradually before the precedure to desensitize her to it a bit. I have similar issues with my son's hair being washed, so I am trying to get his hair wet a LOT while we are bathing, even though I am not washing his hair. It gets easier each time. I often wash my hair with him so that he can see it's OK. The doll-thingy they did for n's son is a GREAT idea, too. Have your child paly with a doll and pretend to do the procedure with the doll and with your child. Thank God we did not have to go through this EEG thing yet. I dread it. Because of the sleep deprivation mainly. I hope I will never have to do this with Evan. But I will be praying for you, too, so that things go well during the preocedure and with the reading. Take care, Margie
