The reason I ask is that I haven't lost but 3lbs since my 5th month, and I'm rapidly approaching 6 months. I can handle it if this is what it is gonna be from here on out, but I just want to know. Today I feel very worried that I am done, and maybe going to start gaining. Due to hernia, I cannot lift weights so I'm down to walking mostly about 3 miles a day. I am also eating a lot today for some reason...I'm just HUNGRY and nervous I guess. I just keep wanting something so I keep eating... Guest guest
No. No. No. Failure is not in our vocabulary! Shame. Slapping your hands. No. No. All you can do is the best you can do. Not perfect, you're human. Just your best. Your body will do what your body will do. Each of us are different. Unique. Your weight loss will be whatever it will be. If you hear from MGB'er # 128, and she's lost 80 pounds since her sixth month, does that in any way mean that you will too??? Why do you think that other people's experiences are gonna predict YOUR future? That, I think, would be setting yourself up for some serious disappointment. Let your own self be your guide. The rule of thumb is 70-80% of excess weight gone in 12 months. Isn't that the figure? And that's an average. And that, unfortunately, means that some lost 50% and some lost 100%, and the average was somewehre near the middle of that. How can you know where you will fall on this scale? My body carries on a fairly regular discourse with me, and she told me, long about 6 months post op, that she had this " new thing " all figured out; she was comfortable with it and she'd pretty much like to hang right here, she was happy. And my response was, NO way, woman, we've got a long way to go. Well, here I am at almost 10 months out, and she's in control and winning this argument! I could tell then that my body had made the adjustment ~ being so used to drastic eating changes from a lifetime of dieting~ and the loss since then has been very slow. At 6 months I had lost 55 pounds. At 10 months I have lost 72. And you know what, Sweetie? I accept it. I have no choice. I feel great; look fine; can do every little thing I want to do, and life is way too sweet to complain. Next year I hope to nip and tuck and rid myself of these arm and thigh wings as well as the jelly belly, and then I am finished. Done. Fini. I am getting on with life and moving way past being a post op WLS person. Moving right on to being just me again. Please, cut yourself some slack! You're not a F-word. (Not that one, folks!) You're giving it your best shot. Then you get an A+. Take each small success and love it as though it were huge. To someone else, who's not been as fortunate as you, it is an enviable achievment! Never forget how far you've come. Nor that we've still got a ways to go and can still chalk off several more pounds. You will do just fine, dear heart. Just fine. Don't ever let me hear that word from you again! You're a winner! Phondly and Phirmly, PhillyJude
Guest guest
> Any people out there that could share with me there losses after 6 months??? > > Worried and feeling like a complete failure, > in Ark > , Oh wow I wish I could prevent you from going through the heartache that I go through over how much lost. One thing I want to tell you is that I have kept very close watch on my weight loss...I weigh in every other day at the gym. I record my weight in an Excel program and it figures my loss each month. What I do notice is that since about my 6th month, the weight would no longer drop each time I weighed.....it would fluctuate on the same dang 2-3 pounds and then all the sudden it would drop. So I would go the whole month paniked that I was no longer loosing weight. Then all the sudden I would drop. If you look at my stats at the bottom, you will see that in those months I was complaining and worrying, I was losing. A bit less yes, but the main thing that upset my psyche was just my patterned had changed. So perhaps your pattern is changing but you will have the same amount lost at the end of the month. Or another thing which could affect your loss is water retention. I noticed I could retain up to 8 yes 8 whole pounds of water! This can happen for a number of reasons especially if I was not getting enough water or protein in my diet. All the sudden I would gain 2-3 pounds per day! I would freak and take a water pill and bammm....lost! And please don't forget the muscle mass and fat mass angle to all this! I also keep close records of my measurements. There have been times when I thought I was not losing weight but when I checked my measurements.....Inches were lost! So the best advice I can give you is to not over analyze this change. And the best advice you can give me....is to practice what I preach =) Here are my stats from surgery to now. Hope they help you to see what I could not see at times.....though I thought I was not losing....I had kept a pretty steady loss until the month between July and August of this year. Granted, it is not the loss I had hoped to have, nor is it the loss that many people who start at my weight had......but I did keep losing for that first year. Stay Strong and Stay Focused! Good Luck! Guest guest
Thanks, Beth! I am a nature worrier and I guess it is just time for a slow down and maybe my time is here for a change in how I lose!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share all that..it made me feel much better! I really appreciate it! I have lost so well for so long I think that the sudden stop is almost shocking...I'll get past this. I walked a little harder and longer tonight though, LOL! Guest guest
Thanks PhillyJude! I just have really, really been very depressed lately, and I have no reason to feel that way. I have MUCH to be thankful for, but I am still so blue and I think this isn't helping...LOL.... You wonderful people help me remember that such is life~~if I never lost another lb, I've won many, many freedoms and have a much healthier life. It will be enough, that I know. ADJUSTING and ACCEPTING is the hard part, right? LOL Something funny happened to me tonight that really put it all in perspective. Before surgery, I was 322lbs and probably LOOKED like more...tonight at the gym I hopped on the only available treadmill next to this man. As I pushed the power switch he said " That doesn't work " I said " Oh well it came on " and he said " Yes, it will start, but the belt will drag and throw you around. Or maybe it only does that to people over 200lbs " and I said " Well then I'd better not get on it " and he said " No WAY are you over 200lbs lady " >WELL doncha know I felt good??? GREAT? I laughed and said I was indeed over 200lbs and was actually over 300lbs not long ago to which he said " Well you'd never have guessed it " ....needless to say I FLOATED all 53 minutes on the treadmill tonight! Guest guest
, Could you be on any type of medication that is causing you to want to eat. Some antidepressants can cause a person to feel hungry and eat more than usual. Make sure that isn't a side effect to something you're taking and I'd talk with your doctor, too. I know we've talked in the past about antidepressants, but I don't remember what your taking. I've heard of people gaining weight with Paxil, Zoloft, and there's one other that my sister is taking and she's gain 50 lb. in the past year. Can't remember which one she's taking though. There are some that actually make you not want to eat. Talk with your doctor, maybe you need switched to something else. Don't feel like you are going to fail. Get that thought out of your head RIGHT NOW! It's not going to help you one bit to start thinking like that. I really think there's a good chance there's a problem with your medications. Are you drinking to soon after meals? I seem to find myself hungry not long after eating if I've drank to soon after eating. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO FAIL! Don't forget that! Guest guest
, I rapidly lost during the first five months, but have lost nothing since my sixth month. I hope things go better for you. I just had my annual appointment a few days ago. I saw her a month before my MGB, and I did gain a few pounds after seeing her. According to my weight record with her office(clothed, but on an empty stomach), I lost 70 pounds. My scales(naked first thing in the morning)say 78. I really expected to lose more since I lost so well the first few month, but no such luck. Good luck with your losses! Guest guest
, you lost so fast that your body is probably just trying to catch up! Your first 5 months were unusually fast, so you are probably on a plateau that will end one of these days, but you will never again lose as fast as you have in the first 5 months. But, that's okay. Give yourself a little time, and keep on doing all those healthy things you talk about all the time. You will lose some more. You probably just got a little spoiled at the speed at first, but slow is good also. I'll bet those inches continue to go, even if the weight is hanging on right now. Didn't I see a post from you that your hormones might be out of whack? That is probably what is making you feel a little blue right now. Guest guest
Thanks, Sue. Yeah I am thinking about swimming too. My good friend (who has lost a whopping 150lbs in 9 months) is a lap swimmer, so I've kind of shied away from it as I'm not much of one myself, but I think I might try it. I enjoy the treadmill. I'm not super fast or anything yet, but I am making a lot of progress and my leg muscles are developing, slowly but surely. I, too, had this hernia prior to surgery. It's right below my belly button and probably a little smaller than yours is. It's about the size of a small grapefruit I'd guess. If I didn't have so much skin around my tummy, it would probably be HUGE! HAHA! Camoflauge! Are you wanting a panniculetomy or TT one day? I'm hoping, since mine isn't paining me, to wait til I'm out a year and get a panni done at the same time so that ins. will pay for the panni while repairing the hernia. Hugs and thanks! in ARk
Guest guest
, I'm approaching 6 months, too (surgery 3/5/01). As of this writing, I'm down 80 pounds - I still weigh every day, though I know I shouldn't. The weight loss rate has slowed down the past couple of months, but seems to be pretty steady at about 6-8 pounds per month of late. I also have a hernia. Mine is an abdominal hernia that has been steadily growing since diagnosed two years ago. My weight prevented the surgery that I need to repair it. The hernia is on my lower right abdomen (probably the result of a fat woman having three c-sections). At present the hernia is now about the size of a cantelope. I have a 6-month post-op appointment with my PCP on September 18th. Besides the check-up and bloodwork we will be discussing when to get this hernia repaired. As for exercise, I work out at the YMCA three days per week. I swim whenever I can. I find the swimming is not as hard on my hernia because of the boyancy the water offers (I float like a cork anyway!!). I don't do as much walking as I should and find that the walking makes my abdomen uncomfortable. I am investing in some support underwear (yeah Spandex) to help support my sagging abdomen. It seems to lessen the discomfort I feel by the end of the day. Hope this helps. Don't get discouraged. I haven't checked your stats lately, but I believe you've lost more weight than I have. The weight loss will continue and can only be beneficial. If you want to talk some more feel free to email me privately at johnc27023@... or reply to the group. I read everything even though I don't post very often. Guest guest
, Yes, I'd love to have a tummy tuck along with the hernia repair. I'm hoping to hold out on the hernia until early next Spring. That way the tummy tuck at the same time would be worth it. So far, it looks like my insurance will not pay for any nips and tucks, so if I have that done at the same time as the hernia repair at least I won't be paying for the anesthesia and hospital stay for a second surgery. At least that's what would happen in a perfect world!!! We'll see. I'll let you and the group know what happens at my appointment on the 18th. Hang in there!! Guest guest
, you must get that hormone patch. I have been on it for approx two weeks now. Dr. R. posted that paper on it and I posted it again the other day. Dr. R. even emailed me personally when he saw me posting about depression and how the meds weren't working. Anyway, I feel MUCH, MUCH better now. please look into this!!! email me personally if you would like. Vellucci Re: 6 months to 12 months loss? HAHA Anyhow thanks for all the patience and kindness tonight....I needed it. HUGS in Ark
Guest guest
Don't throw away that Prozac!!!!!!!! you must take the hormones AND an antidepressant, Prozac makes you feel better and controls obsessive compulsive disorder, so will, in theory, help you stay away from binging. My sister has lost about 5 lbs per month without dieting by taking Prozac. I took it for years and never made me gain weight, it actually helped with my binging or I would have been 500 lbs!!!!!!!! I am thinking of chucking all that and getting the estrogen patch actually...don't know yet but am thinking about it! Thanks for the kind words....They mean a lot to me! Guest guest
Hi , I had a 5 week stop on my weightloss, it is very frustrating. The weightloss restarted around the six month mark. I also lost hair about the same as the halt on the weight. I am still losing despite the gallbladder problems. Good luck, I hope you restart soon. O 2/5/01 245/165/140? Guest guest
Sue, Hold out on the hernia surgery as long as you can, closer to goal. I had a c-section herniate, it was the size of a small watermelon. I can tell you that the mesh they inserted left me with a hole not to mention a sagging lower section. The scar for me runs from the c-section line to the navel. You generally have drains also. I had my MGB done 14 months after the repair but the surgeon feels that the insurance will recover the tuck when I am closer to goal. I hope you will be at the picnic, it would be nice to meet you.
