Tania,

I am no expert but I wait 1 hr. after meals. Sometimes I will steal a sip in

after 30 minutes if I HAVE to, but I try my BEST to wait an hour everytime.

I drink immediately before and after, and even take microsips during.

Hey guys...

Thanks to the No drinking I have finally broken that crazy plateau that I was

on.

I am extremely thirsty most of the time... if I do not drink a bunch 20

minuts before I eat...I think I am going to die without drinking after I eat.

:::TIP:::

My solution has been to take a mouth full of water and hold it in my mouth...

swish it around then spit it out. Hey doing this once or twice usually helps

the craving go away. I try to make it to 45 mins after eating anything solid.

And hey I saw 5 more pounds disappear last week,

Oh Please Lord Keep it coming off. :-)

Hugs to all.

No, what it will do is flush the food out of our systems. We need those

calories for our health, and also, it will make us lose the feeling of

satiety quicker, making us eat MORE in the end.

Some people do this on purpose, hoping to somehow " cheat " the system...they

believe if they drink away the food, they lose the calories. But it is a no

win situation. Long term, we hope to have modified, healthy eating habits.

If we start trying to cheat our tool now, we are doomed in the future.

While it is VERY hard to learn to not drink after meals or during meals

(trust me, I was the queen of one bite one drink myself) it is DOABLE. I do

not drink for a full hour after meals now, but at first I could only go for

30 minutes. And if I eat something very dry or say salad dressing, I will

sometimes HAVE to take a small sip once in a while after only 15 minutes, but

I try not to with all my might.

For me, I believe it will make a difference in my future health AND future

weight loss, and that gave me the initiative to go for it and stick to it.

To me, it is like taking my vitamins~~a part of being the healthiest post op

I can be.

, I agree with you. I don't know what the deal is about

drinking and eating. I've heard so many different stories. What is

the problem with drinking with meals or within one hour. Someone

please respond and let and I know the reason for this rule.

Thanks

I can eat a lot, and I mean a lot. I have no problem putting away

a steak that is 9 oz when I have a glass of water with dinner. When

I don't drink with meals I eat more like a " normal gb " person. I

believe that the liquids wash the contents of the pouch faster

enabling us to eat more, therefore we're compensating for the surgery

and learning to eat around the pouch.

UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTION OF THE SMALL GASTRIC POUCH; APPLICATION TO

POST-OP TEACHING AND EVALUATION

By Latham Flanagan, Jr., M.D., FACS

THREE PRINCIPLES FOR GAINING AND MAINTAINING SATIETY

1. The pouch needs to be truly filled with adequate wall distention with

each meal (i.e. no snacking).

2. Keep the pouch filled over time and slow down the emptying time (by

eating solid foods and avoiding liquids for fifteen minutes before and one

and one half to two hours after eating. We understand this to be the most

important lifestyle change after the gastric bypass procedure.

3. Finally, adequate protein with each meal. We emphasize three meals a day

including breakfast (defined as the first meal of the day which is eaten

within one to two hours after arising). We define the " enemy " as high

calorie liquids. We point out that snacking and high calorie liquids cheat

the patient because the calories are taken in without offering significant

satiety.

__________________________

I think the idea is that if we drink with or right after meals it liquefies

the food we ate so it passes thru the pouch quickly. That means we also will

get hungry more quickly. That is what we are trying to avoid. If you drink

about 15 minutes before you eat supposedly you will eat less.

The gist of it was that the water moves the food out of your tummy faster,

causing you to feel hungry sooner and eat more. If food stays in your stomach

longer you get a more satisfied feeling and do not, or can not, eat more very

soon. It is a matter of satiety, or the feeling of being full longer.

Georgina,

Thanks for this information. This mentioned not snacking between meals and I

thought it was best for us MGB people to eat several small " meals " /snacks

throughout the day. I don't snack much an normally just eat one " good " meal a

day. I find that if I've eaten lunch, I can eat very, very little for dinner.

Thanks to everyone for the information about drinking after meals. My concern

was that it could/would stretch the pouch... Glad that don't seem to be the

case. Most of the time, I do not drink with meals, but sometimes seems like I

can't help it.

Eileen:

Yeah, kinda - but Gatorade has lower sugar levels than most juices,

sodas, fruit and other drink blends and it has the added benefit of

providing much needed nutrients to support electrolyte levels in the

body.

I STRONGLY SECOND THE ADVICE.

I have followed that religiously since surgery. I have told many folks that I

don;t drink liquds for an hour before or an hour after eating. It helps me to

stay and feel full longer. I have had people poo-poo the idea but the way I

looked at it was if it works - DO IT!

It was hard for me to do. I drank ALOT with meals - the iced tea king -

unsweetended kind but glass after glass.

But I also make sure to get an adequate amount of water intake. I find that if I

don;t lose and have a more difficult time maintaining.

JP,

Did I read that correctly? You weighed 600 lbs and now weigh 182 lbs? Did you

have the MGB? WOW! Congratulations on living a miracle! Do you have photos or

are they posted anywhere. What an inspiration you are.

God bless,

Pat
