Day 5 after surgery

Hi,Yesterday was a really active day. I am beginning to believe that my swallowing and sleeping problems may be history. I returned my set of barium swallow xrays to the local hospital, dropped by my GI's office and wrote him a note about how the surgery went, went to lunch with my daughter, and then rented some DVD's to keep me occupied so I would not be so physically active. I was thrilled that I could eat potato chips at 8 pm. In the past, potato chips would have tortured me all night, but not last night. I had another great sleep. For lunch, I was able to eat a salad with onions and red peppers without any bad results. I will say, that I do not like the feeling of coffee anymore since it seems to be irritating. I am much better with green tea, or tea latte. So, my boss wants to know when I will be ready to return to work fulltime. I think that after labor day is a good target. I'll check with Dr. Katz when I go back up to NYC for my followup visit next Monday. Just getting myself up to NYC from Philadelphia on the Amtrak, followed by riding around on the subway to the doctor's office (I think I will stop by the Guggenheim museum first), will convince me that I am getting back to my activity level. I have stopped using Tylenol, since the incision is more annoying than painful. I feel as if I have been given a second chance at life and I am eager to make the most of every minute. I am really chomping at the bit to get back to playing my English horn and oboe, but Dr. Katz told me to wait for at least two weeks before trying to play a wind instrument again.Ginny

Joan,

Thank you for your kind note. I only joined this group at the end of

July 2004, after I had found my surgeon's website and had already

scheduled an appointment. The decision to have the lap. heller

myotomy happened so quickly because of my severe lung complications.

I did not have time to even look back at past postings from this

group. I just accepted what Dr. Katz said regarding recovery time,

and that I could start eating solid foods the day after surgery. I

have to admit that everytime I tackle a food that used to give me

problems (like the vegetarian lasagna that I had for lunch today), I

cannot help but wonder if I will really be able to eat it. The

alternative is to continue to eat soft, comfort foods, which is most

of what I have eaten for as long as I can remember. I am really

really sick of comfort foods!!!! So, I also tackled the salad at

lunch, which a few weeks ago was a real big deal. Drinking ice water

without a straw was an even bigger deal. It seems that my body is

more normal if I feed it food that gives it something to do.

At my job, I am a research chemist, and I just see each day after

surgery as another opportunity to experiment. For me, finding an

experienced, skilled, surgeon for achalasia was the most important

research project I have ever tackled. I was worried when we saw my

barium swallow results before the surgery, that no surgeon would be

willing to tackle my case. I am just so grateful for the surgery. I

never dreamed the day would come when I would actually feel normal. I

will keep the group up to date on my progress. Perhaps I had gone to

far in accepting achalasia, until my lungs made me pay attention

again. One motivation was that I wanted to be able to continue

playing my beloved English horn- seriously !

Gail,

It sounds like you might have made the mistake that I made. I let

myself get dehydrated. If your doctor agrees, try drinking 8 ounces of

water for every hour you're awake. If you start feeling better in a few

hours, then that's likely what happened (especially the nausea). For

some reason, we seem to need a lot of water to get past this.

Gail -

With my surgeries, my ear only began to really " hurt " when it started really healing up.  Your continued drainage has me worried though - does it smell really unctious?  I'm glad you're seeing your doc tomorrow because you need to get checked out.  Also, one lady to another - you need to go #2!!  Go - or get someone to go for you - and get some Senakot (http://www.senokot.com/html/main/index.asp) or a generic derivative thereof - it's super mild and you need to take some NOW.  Like Matt said, you're probably dehydrated, but if you're anything like me, if you take pain pills, you have a hard time (no pun intended) going #2.

FEEL BETTER and let us know what happens w/ you!!

Melinda & Matt

thank you.

I thought the drainage was normal - hopefully ok waiting unti

l tomorrow. Appreciate the tip on the water - funny i'm a

camel on good days - just haven't felt much like drinking water.

woooo hoooo never thought i'ld be so happy about a little #2LOL

Melinda did you take percaset or vikeden? I guess both would

have the same side effects.

Did you 2 find that the days got a bit more challenging before getting better

again?! beginning to feel like a tractor trailer is parked on the right side of

my head with a load of dried cotton.

thanks again
