Guest guest
My implant (right ear) was paid for by insurance, BUT you have to realize that the prosthesis can only do so much. I still wear a hearing aid in that ear as well. I'm very glad to have the prosthesis because there are times when I can't wear the aids and it gives me some level of useful hearing. My left ear has my own hearing bones reshaped and reinstalled ... they don't work well at all. I do pretty well with a hearing aid in that ear, so I won't get a prosthesis in that ear unless the doctor has to go back in for more cholesteatoma. You can use a medical savings account for the hearing aids - I've done that and it's fairly painless to spread the cost out over a year of payroll deductions. I do one each year and then I get about a 5 year break. I'm hoping my Behind-the-Ear aids last longer than 7 years. Guest guest
I should add that each case will be different. I have additional issues beyond cholesteatoma with my ears. You might have a more favorable result. Matt
Guest guest
I also missed the word Baha in the subject line. I can't comment on those at all. Mine is a TORP.
Guest guest
The information I received was that the BAHA implant and surgery are covered by insurance. While the surgical post will potentially last a lifetime, the sound processor only lasts about 5 years and the replacement is not covered by insurance. I believe the BAHA sound processors are quite a bit more expensive than standard hearing aids. Some people don't have an option for a standard hearing aid if they no longer have nerve conduction. For me personally, I still have some nerve conduction and prefer not to have more surgery so will be looking into standard aids.
