Patti --

Congratulations!!! I wish you a nice, easy pregnancy and delivery.

Lists...write lots of lists...at Target, they have these huge, weekly dry erase calendars. They also have monthly ones. I have one of those to keep my stuff straight. And I can't even claim pregnancy brain! However, I have three children...they stole all my working brain cells. The ones I have left are seemingly not firing on all cylinders.

Bring someone with you to the IEP -- friend, family member (someone sympathetic to you and your son...not someone who doesn't understand). They can take notes for you. I know one time I had to sit through a meeting for services when I was pregnant. My son was actually turned down for OT -- which is pretty laughable now! -- and mostly I was ready to slug the woman telling me that my son's problem was just immaturity and if I just worked with him every day, he'd be fine. It's not smart to say that to a nearly 6 month pregnant woman. I gave her a look that could have frozen hell and asked her, "Do you think I haven't tried that?!?!?" Then it was actually kind of fun listening to her try and backpedal: "Oh, Mrs. Shaft, I didn't mean to suggest that you don't work with him...I simply meant I think he'll get it eventually...blah, blah, blah..." Uh-huh. Well, that's really about all I remember of that conversation. So, bring along a buddy to the IEP meeting. They'll catch whatever you don't!

Patti - Congratulations!

And my birthday is April 24th. Just in case your baby is a day late, you'll

have to name her after me. Here's the spelling: C-H-R-I-S-T-I-N-A

Don't you hate how specialists give you this grand pronouncement about your child's condition and subsequent future in the same way they would tell you they had tuna fish for lunch?!?!? Yeah. When our youngest son was diagnosed, I knew the doc was going to say the "A" word, but I just didn't want to hear it. I don't think you're ever really prepared for it. Well, she said it so matter-of-factly, then gave us a whole bunch of handouts and papers, and I just burst into tears. She handed me a tissue box, and told us that once we were "composed" to come on out, since the waiting room was getting a little backed up.

Some days, I can't believe I haven't slugged someone yet.

I had the same fear with my second and third pregnancies. You just never know. As my husband told me, well, if the next one has it, we'll know what to do. When you get down about it, just look at it that way. You'll know what to do.

Telling me not to worry is like telling me not to breathe. My husband is very, "Hey, everything will be fine," or "Don't worry about it," etc., etc. But me, no. Not at all.

And I must admit...I know I should take much better care of myself, but I have got nothing left time-wise, money-wise, or energy-wise after taking care of my kids and husband. I don't get many breaks because my husband has a very demanding job and is hardly ever home. So, that's probably why I feel a whole lot older than I am!

Who is your child psych? If you don't want to announce it to the world, you could tell me off-list. It's so hard to find a good one. Ours you wait for hours to see, but she takes her time with you, and you get all your questions answered. She has books, toys, video games, a computer -- for the patients who are waiting. The past two times we've gone, my boys have knocked over a table she has in her office -- it's little and not at all sturdy, in their defense. But, she never gets all bent out of shape over it. I get more upset than she ever does.

Oh yeah, I can pick out a doc who doesn't have kids from one who does. Or, if they say they do have kids, I find out they're older and probably neurotypical. One doc told me years ago that my son's head was measuring too small and if that happened the next visit, well, we'd need to do some tests. Okay, he was a substitute doc, not our regular doc. So, I got a little freaked out. He then started backpedaling, like it was no big deal. I looked at his left hand and saw a ring. I pointed to it and said, "Do you have any kids?" He said he didn't and kind of squirmed in his chair. "I can tell," I said. Then I added, "If you had kids, you never would have said what you just said the way you said it." He apologized. I'll give him one point for that.

I have three kids and they are all different. Two are on the Spectrum, one, so far, is neurotypical. Even the two on the Spectrum are completely different. Again, you just never know.

Oh thank you, I hope this goes better than the last one...the last one almost died. Not a great first time delivery...made me gun shy for a long time. This time, I'm trying to be very positive while battling the anxiety monster...

I'm taking your idea of lists, I've been trying to clean off my desk and catch up on all this email...

What a funny story! Hopefully I will have my husband with me. He wasn't there for ' psych appt the other day. We are trying to specifically rediagnose. She's leaning toward Asperger's, but maybe PDD. So, I said, do you think maybe he's just oversensitive, and maybe not autism at all. She smiled and said that parents are often in denial and that is definitely autistic. It shattered me. I pray the next one doesn't have it, but if he or she does I guess I will deal with it. It's hard not to be hurt by all this autism stuff. Yeah, she had that smug look on her face, like she enjoyed telling me something was wrong with my son. The other thing that bothers me about her is she seems uncomfortable around him. He was climbing all over her leather couch, which as long he's not getting hurt and he's quiet, hey that's all good for me...but she was getting stressed, I could see. I don't think she likes us. Our last psych in California was really good at getting down on the floor and being nice, so she said was doing well. This one thinks we are like space aliens or something...

I hear ya, I was real upset the other day, and I actually asked her if she even had kids. I think she was taken aback....Her nails and makeup and clothes were perfect. I know, because I'm the Avon lady, and even I don't always look my best being a stay at home mom. So, I was surprised, that she said yes, and that was all. She keeps her info to herself. I noticed that the psychologists I guess are trying to keep their distance, but still....

I've been worried at least once a day about my second one having the same problems, but my husband said the same thing, we just can't worry about it....and that's hard to do...

Hi Patti - Conratulations to your family! I read your emails and also the responses, and I have to say I know quite a few families with a healthy second or third offspring...! I try to think of them when I am contemplating having another one myself.... Please do not worry too much as stress during pregnancy has been linked to developmental issues. I think we will go for it in 2 years or so once my 4.5 yo is going to be a bit more independent, and after a thorough detox. I do have a guess about what may have gone wrong with my 1st pregancy and may have contributed to my son's autism - of course mainstream docs think I am nuts, but not the alternative ones.... I do not want to get into more details on the list, but if you want to know more about my doctors recommendations for a safe pregancy and healthy 2nd child, I would be happy to email you off

list. Best wishes,

Hi Patti,

When I had my second baby we did not know Tony was on the spectrum yet.

We were told during an ultra sound that Andy, my second son, may have

chromosomal disorder. I was so anxious (my natural anyway) for awhile.

We prayed and I just decided to be calm and my OB/GYN was a great

support! In the end Andy was perfect! No problems. He has a temper but

is a typical 6 year old.

So, have faith all will be OK. Take good care of yourself.

We will try to be at the next meeting. Cub scouts starts on Sept. 6th.

After that our Wednesdays are full until scouting ends. Take care!

Hi Jackie and Patti -

Your story, Jackie, reminded me of my 2nd pregnancy. I also did not know at the time that my son was on the spectrum yet and there were concerns about my daughter's heart - we went to a specialist and, long story short - everything turned out fine. She's healthy and came out over a pound bigger than my son!

Stay positive and enjoy the journey this baby will bring.

Hi,

We are on the same boat. My due date is May 7. I just fount out

yesterday, but have to find an OB doc to make sure everything is all

right. Just when I think that I finally have a break since my son goes

Hi !

Congrats! Wow, it must be in the water....!

My due date is Apr 23.

My son started preschool today and have been real weepy. I have never put him on the bus before, and I smiled and waved so he wouldn't be scared, then I've depressed all afternoon. I saw my hubby at work, and he said that he thought I'd be happy for some free time. I am, but today I'm mourning the loss.

I know what you mean, I'm worried about being able to control my son when I'm huge. I've decided that I can't worry about it, as other moms handle it, so there's got to be a way, right? And of course, pray!

I don't know about your family, but now that I'm used to not having my family around, it's better when they aren't here. If this makes sense.

What part of Cleveland do you live in? I'm in Brecksville.

Hi , Congratulations to your family!!! That's so exciting! I am sure that you will find a way, somehow, to cope with and new baby...it's not gonna be easy but you can do it!! Myself, I am waiting for another 2 years to have another baby....until Evan gets a bit older and more calm and independent....so I don't have any good advice of a-mother-of-two-or-more, but I guess the fact that will be in school most of the time will be helpful, don't you think?? Anyhow, good luck and God Bless~ kjcfamily <kjcfamily@...> wrote: Hi,We are on the same boat. My due date is May 7.
