Guest guest
Hi! I tried to post a few days ago but I have not heard from anyone.I had surgery 10 days ago to remove an external canal cholesteatoma from my left ear. The stitches were removed last week. I have also had an otis media with effusion in the right ear atleast once year for 8 years. I'm concerned because the operated ear still has bandage inside.lately, it has felt blocked and the ringing has increased. The right ear feels fuller as well. Could the operated ear be infected? What would that mean? Could the OME in the right eart be back?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Sorry no one has responded - I have not had a problem like you are experiencing, however, you had surgery recently and I am sure there is a lot of internal swelling, etc. - as time pass I am sure your symptoms will get better. Hope you start feeling better soon! Guest guest
yes, I think your "external" canal c-toma is a first for this group. You must tell us more. Guest guest
I'm teaching at a university in Seoul. 8 years ago, I started to have ear problems. Doctors thought I might have meniere's in the left ear. Some doctors thought I might have otosclerosis in the right ear. I started to get 1-2 ear infections in the right ear. This has caused eustacian tube problems as well. I have visited every university hospital in Seoul. Most dr.s missed it because my ear canal just seemed to have an odd shape. There wasn't an infection in that ear. I have visited one particular dr. who had done a 2 year fellowship at Hopkins. Initially he noticed some growth but didn't think it was a big deal. I became hypersensitive to anything ear related. As a result, I usually visited him once a month. 6 months ago, he checked and while cleaning it, he noticed that part of the ear canal seemed to have been deformed and destroyed. He sent me to the Catholic University Hospital to have it checked out. I had a battery of tests which included balance, hearing , and a ct scan. Balance tests revealed 80% loss in left ear as well hypo active right ear function. The hearing was within normal range except for some loss at 2k in the right ear. He didn' t think I had meniere's. He diagnosed EAC in the left ear as well early otoscerlosis in the right. He said he'd check the ears in 6 months and said surgery wasn't needed in the near future. I had my check up around x-mas. When he looked in my ear , I think he was stunned because he mistook part of the c-toma as just an oddly shaped ear canal. It turns out it had grown and was pushing against the canal wall.He said I needed an operation. I had it on January 14th. My ear is still packed and I'm on antibiotics and anti infammatory meds. I go back this Friday. I hope the ear isn't infected and I am worried about the chronic ear infections in the right ear. Could they cause a c-toma in the right ear. Guest guest
Well Larry, Many of us have issues in both ears, so if they've found it in one they'll start watching the other one closely. Hang in there ... things will get better. I believe the American Neurotological Association is working on some recognition exercises for ENT generalists and maybe even doctors in family practice. I'm still amazed at the one Nurse Practitioner that caught a case that someone mentioned. Guest guest
I found that I didn't have any trouble. I bought juice as soon as I crossed security, requested more juice on the plane. Then during my layover, I found a place that served soup and asked them to give me just the broth. It wasn't a problem at all.
