Madeleine,

I was going to say, " Long time, no see. " But I guess we don't really see each

other via the email. In any case I'm glad you posted. I think of you every

year about this time. I'm glad to hear that all is going well for you.

Well here I am, just been diagnosed with an Attic Cholesteatoma in the right

ear, left ear is clear so far. I am booked in for surgery on the 26th October

as this is the soonest date open. Had tubes/grommets in my ears (mainly right)

from around age 13, last at age 30...I am now 45. Should have kept up with the

Annual Doctor check ups!

I have read may of your posts and find comfort in them, I think I am ready for

the hearing loss, but the possible side effects of the surgery are the real

worry for me....

I have corresponded with Marsteller off this website, and if there is

man worth his weight in gold, then he is it. Thank you Matt for your words of

encouragement, they have given me and my family great comfort....I do appreciate

the offer of support through these new and challenging times.

My Doc had told me that the size is substantial and that it has eroded into

other areas in the mastoid. I may be a candidate for a CWD.

Strange thing is I didn't really have any problems until about 3months ago when

a discharge came out of my ear, just before a 3 week vacation organised to the

USA with the family. Anyway saw the GP he said ear infection, put some drops in

and off you go....Seemed to work, discharge stops....The flying didn't bother

me, the trip went well, however on the last leg in LA the ringing in the ears

started to get louder and became annoying.

Hearing was good, but decided to go back to my specialist.

Wednesday Doctor Visit, Thursday CT scan, Friday the bad news....

The whole thing didn't hit me until I went home and the googled the

disease....then it home!

Thank you again Matt for making me stop, take a breath, and then consider all

the angles....I was heading for a depressed state of mind if it wasn't for you.

I know what I have to face....this forum and many other sources of good

information make the whole process easier now!

Fingers crossed my facial nerves will get through this....I can tolerate the

hearing loss as I still have one good ear (which will be checked no matter what

every 6 months) and a long life to live...

Looking forward to getting to know you all....

Christofi

Try not to worry. Doctors are excellent today with all the modern equipment to monitor nerves, etc. and if you were able to fly and didn't have issues (other than ringing) your facial nerve will more than likely be perfectly fine. Take care and I am sure you will feel a huge relief when surgery is over in October.
